Risk factors associated with functional esophageal disorders (FED) versus gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
DiscussionThis is the first report of a greater risk of FED in patients with underweight BMI, insomnia, chronic pain, allergic rhinitis, or of Asian or Hispanic ethnicities. The weak associations between female gender and anxiety are corroborated in other studies. Our findings enable clinicians to better screen patients with reflux for this disorder.Graphical abstract (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Intensive pre-operative information course (IPIC) and pre-operative weight loss results in long-term sustained weight loss following bariatric surgery: 11  years results from a tertiary referral centre
ConclusionsIPIC and higher pre-operative weight loss improve weight loss post-bariatric surgery and reduce the likelihood of weight regain during long-term follow-up. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Impact on carotid intima-media thickness after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy in patients with morbid obesity
ConclusionWe observed a significant reduction in CIMT& improvement in 2D ECHO parameters at 6 after LSG although no statistically significant change was observed in mean right CIMT& EF at 6  months. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

The death of laparoscopy
ConclusionsThe study suggests a transformative shift towards robotic-assisted surgery, poised to dominate various minimally invasive procedures. The forecasts indicate that robotic surgery may surpass laparoscopy and open surgery in colectomies, proctectomies, pancreatectomies, and esophagectomies by 2025. This anticipated change emphasizes the need for proactive adjustments in surgical training programs to align with evolving surgical practices. The findings have substantial implications for future healthcare practices, necessitating a balance between traditional laparoscopy and the burgeoning role of robotic-assisted sur...

Ultrasound-guided robotic surgical procedures: a systematic review
ConclusionThe advantages of robotic instrumentation, including ergonomics, dexterity, and precision of movements, are of relevance for robotic intraoperative ultrasound (RIOUS). The present systematic review demonstrates the virtue of RIOUS to support surgeons and potentially reduce minimally invasive procedure times. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Robot-assisted versus laparoscopic-assisted gastrectomy among malnourished patients with gastric cancer based on textbook outcome
ConclusionsFor malnourished patients with GC, RAG performed by experienced surgeons can achieved a higher rate of TO than those of LAG, which directly contributed to better AC compliance and a faster restoration of nutritional status. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Efficacy and safety of long-term indwelling plastic stents after resolution of pancreatic fluid collections with endoscopic transmural drainage: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsOur results show that LTIS after PFC resolution with ETD is feasible, safe, and superior to SSR in reducing the risk of PFC recurrence and need for interventions. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Single anastomosis duodenal switch versus Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in patients with BMI  ≥ 50 kg/m2: a multi-centered comparative analysis
ConclusionsIn our cohort, SADI-S was associated with higher and sustained weight-loss results compared to RYGB. Comorbidity resolution was also higher after SADI-S. Both procedures demonstrate a similar safety profile. Further studies are required to validate the long-term safety of SADI-S compared to other bariatric procedures. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Index admission cholecystectomy for biliary acute pancreatitis or choledocholithiasis reduces 30-day readmission rates in children
ConclusionsIndex cholecystectomy was performed in only 59% of pediatric patients admitted with BAP or choledocholithiasis but was associated with 84% decreased odds of readmission within 30  days. Current guidelines should be updated to reflect these findings, and future studies should evaluate barriers to index cholecystectomy. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Timing of readmissions for complications following emergency colectomy: follow-up beyond post-operative day 30 matters
This study aimed to assess the readmission rate and factors associated with readmission 6-months following emergency colectomy.MethodsA retrospective cohort study of adult patients who underwent emergency colectomy (2010 –2018) was performed using the Nationwide Readmissions Database. The cohort was divided into two groups: (i) no readmission and (ii) emergency readmission(s) for complications related to colectomy (defined using ICD-9/10 codes). Readmissions were categorized as either “early” (POD0–30) or “ late” (>  POD30). Differences between groups were described and multivariable regression controlling...

A decade of experience with minimally invasive anti-reflux operations: robot vs. LESS
ConclusionDespite longer operative times and LOS in older patients, the robotic approach is efficient in undertaking very difficult operations, including patients with type IV or recurrent hiatal hernias. Furthermore, preoperative anti-reflux operations were more likely to be undertaken with the robotic approach than the LESS approach. The patient ’s postoperative symptomatic dysphagia improved relatively more than after the LESS approach. The vast majority of patients who underwent the LESS approach enjoyed improved cosmesis, thus, making LESS a stronger candidate for more routine operations. Despite patient selection b...

Stenting as bridge to surgery versus upfront emergency resection for non-metastatic left sided obstructing colorectal cancer: risk of peritoneal recurrence and long-term outcomes
ConclusionsThere are concerns over oncological safety of SBTS even with low rates of stent-related perforation. Higher rates of peritoneal recurrence are seen especially with T4 colon cancers treated with SBTS. SBTS, DM and nodal stage were significant predictors for peritoneal recurrence.
