Efficacy and safety of long-term indwelling plastic stents after resolution of pancreatic fluid collections with endoscopic transmural drainage: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsOur results show that LTIS after PFC resolution with ETD is feasible, safe, and superior to SSR in reducing the risk of PFC recurrence and need for interventions. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Single anastomosis duodenal switch versus Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in patients with BMI  ≥ 50 kg/m2: a multi-centered comparative analysis
ConclusionsIn our cohort, SADI-S was associated with higher and sustained weight-loss results compared to RYGB. Comorbidity resolution was also higher after SADI-S. Both procedures demonstrate a similar safety profile. Further studies are required to validate the long-term safety of SADI-S compared to other bariatric procedures. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Index admission cholecystectomy for biliary acute pancreatitis or choledocholithiasis reduces 30-day readmission rates in children
ConclusionsIndex cholecystectomy was performed in only 59% of pediatric patients admitted with BAP or choledocholithiasis but was associated with 84% decreased odds of readmission within 30  days. Current guidelines should be updated to reflect these findings, and future studies should evaluate barriers to index cholecystectomy. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Timing of readmissions for complications following emergency colectomy: follow-up beyond post-operative day 30 matters
This study aimed to assess the readmission rate and factors associated with readmission 6-months following emergency colectomy.MethodsA retrospective cohort study of adult patients who underwent emergency colectomy (2010 –2018) was performed using the Nationwide Readmissions Database. The cohort was divided into two groups: (i) no readmission and (ii) emergency readmission(s) for complications related to colectomy (defined using ICD-9/10 codes). Readmissions were categorized as either “early” (POD0–30) or “ late” (>  POD30). Differences between groups were described and multivariable regression controlling...

A decade of experience with minimally invasive anti-reflux operations: robot vs. LESS
ConclusionDespite longer operative times and LOS in older patients, the robotic approach is efficient in undertaking very difficult operations, including patients with type IV or recurrent hiatal hernias. Furthermore, preoperative anti-reflux operations were more likely to be undertaken with the robotic approach than the LESS approach. The patient ’s postoperative symptomatic dysphagia improved relatively more than after the LESS approach. The vast majority of patients who underwent the LESS approach enjoyed improved cosmesis, thus, making LESS a stronger candidate for more routine operations. Despite patient selection b...

Stenting as bridge to surgery versus upfront emergency resection for non-metastatic left sided obstructing colorectal cancer: risk of peritoneal recurrence and long-term outcomes
ConclusionsThere are concerns over oncological safety of SBTS even with low rates of stent-related perforation. Higher rates of peritoneal recurrence are seen especially with T4 colon cancers treated with SBTS. SBTS, DM and nodal stage were significant predictors for peritoneal recurrence. Optimizing the consent process for emergent laparoscopic cholecystectomy using an interactive digital education platform: a randomized control trial
ConclusionThe addition of digital education platform to standard verbal consent significantly improves patient ’s early and delayed understanding of risks and benefits of LC in an acute care setting. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

New gel immersion endoscopic ultrasonography technique for accurate periampullary evaluation
ConclusionsThe ability to depict the pancreatobiliary junction using the gel immersion technique is superior to that of the water-filling method, which may allow for a more detailed assessment of the ampullary region with both radial and convex echoendoscopes. This can be a useful EUS technique for diagnosing pancreaticobiliary maljunction or periampullary tumors. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Achievement of textbook outcome after hepatectomy combined with thermal ablation for colorectal liver metastases
ConclusionsThe combination of hepatectomy and ablation constitutes a valuable solution in patients affected by multiple CRLM and it may provide, also using a MI approach, adequate perioperative and oncological outcomes, allowing to achieve TO, however, in a selected number of patients and depending on several factors including the burden of disease. Effect of anti-reflux suture on gastroesophageal reflux symptoms after one anastomosis gastric bypass: a randomized controlled trial
ConclusionGERD symptoms and de novo GERD after OAGB seems to be under-reported after OAGB. This study suggests that applying an anti-reflux suture can decrease de novo GERD symptoms.Graphical abstract (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Analysis of factors influencing pancreatic fistula after minimally invasive pancreaticoduodenectomy and establishment of a new prediction model for clinically relevant pancreatic fistula
ConclusionsThis model for predicting the probability of pancreatic fistula following MIPD has strong predictive capacity and can provide a trustworthy predictive method for the early screening of high-risk patients with pancreatic fistula after MIPD and timely clinical intervention.
