The evaluation of the association between preoperative sarcopenia and postoperative pneumonia and factors for preoperative sarcopenia in patients undergoing thoracoscopic-laparoscopic esophagectomy for esophageal cancer
ConclusionsPreoperative sarcopenia was confirmed to be a predictor of postoperative pneumonia. Furthermore, age, sex, physical activity, and nutritional status were significantly associated with preoperative sarcopenia. Physical activity and nutritional status are closely associated with each other in patients with esophageal cancer. A multidisciplinary approach to preoperative sarcopenia, taking exercise and nutrition into account, is recommended. (Source: Surgery Today)

A refined prediction of early recurrence combining tumor deposits in patients with resected rectal mucinous adenocarcinoma
ConclusionThe pre-treatment serum CEA level, pre-treatment tumor distance from the anal verge, pathological N  + stage, perineural invasion, and tumor deposits were significantly predictive of ER for rectal MAC patients. (Source: Surgery Today)

The influence of serum cholinesterase levels and sarcopenia on postoperative infectious complications in colorectal cancer surgery
ConclusionPreoperative serum cholinesterase levels may be useful for predicting postoperative infectious complications in colorectal cancer surgery. The association differs by the sarcopenia status, suggesting a potential interaction between nutritional markers and sarcopenia. (Source: Surgery Today)

Comparison of hemodynamics and root configurations between remodeling and reimplantation methods for valve-sparing aortic root replacement: a pulsatile flow study
ConclusionsRM with ESA and RI with neo-sinuses showed comparable hemodynamics. ESA to RM reduced regurgitation. (Source: Surgery Today)

Transarterial chemoembolization for liver metastases of a pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasm: a single-center experience
AbstractTransarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is performed for pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor (PanNEN) liver metastases; however, the safety and efficacy of TACE procedures, especially for patients who have undergone previous pancreatic surgery, have not been established. We reviewed 48 TACE procedures (1 –6 procedures/patient) performed on 11 patients with PanNEN liver metastases, including 16 TACE procedures (4–6 procedures/patient) for 3 patients with a history of biliary-enteric anastomosis. The overall tumor objective response rate was 94%. The incidence of Clavien‒Dindo grade ≥ 2 co mplications was 1/16...

Detecting the location of lung cancer on thoracoscopic images using deep convolutional neural networks
AbstractObjectivesThe prevalence of minimally invasive surgeries has increased the need for tumor detection using thoracoscopic images during lung cancer surgery. We conducted this study to analyze the efficacy of a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) for tumor detection using recorded thoracoscopic images of pulmonary surfaces.Materials and methodsWe collected 644 intraoperative thoracoscopic images of changes in pulmonary appearance from 427 patients with lung cancer between 2012 and 2021. The lesion areas on the thoracoscopic images were detected by bounding boxes using an advanced version of YOLO, a well-known DCN...

Remnant gastritis in gastric cancer patients causes loss of muscle mass 6  months after gastrectomy: a retrospective cohort study of Helicobacter pylori infection
ConclusionsRemnant gastritis did contribute to psoas muscle mass loss during the initial 6  months after gastrectomy, and HP infection was not significantly associated with either remnant gastritis or psoas muscle mass loss. Nevertheless, the potential for HP eradication to prevent muscle loss and improve the survival prognosis for gastrectomy patients merits further research. (Source: Surgery Today)

Prognostic impact of pre- and postoperative tumor markers in patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma
ConclusionsElevated postoperative carbohydrate antigen 19-9 was an independent poor prognostic factor. Preoperative predictors, such as elevated preoperative carbohydrate antigen 19-9, may indicate the need for neoadjuvant therapies to improve the survival. (Source: Surgery Today)

Outcomes of surgical resection for pulmonary metastasis from pancreatic cancer
ConclusionA long-term prognosis may be expected in some cases with a disease-free interval of  ≥ 15 months. Our findings suggest that the disease-free interval may influence the prognosis. (Source: Surgery Today)
