Effect of Delirium on Interhospital Transfer Outcomes
CONCLUSIONS: The relationship between IHT and delirium is complex, and patients with IHT combined with in-hospital delirium are at high risk of longer LOS, discharge to a facility, and mortality.PMID:38307509 | DOI:10.14423/SMJ.0000000000001653 (Source: Southern Medical Journal)

Design and Impact of a Novel Rural Hospital Alliance
South Med J. 2024 Feb;117(2):67-71. doi: 10.14423/SMJ.0000000000001648.ABSTRACTWithout rural hospitals, many patients may not have access to essential services, or even any health care. Rural hospitals provide a community hub for local access to primary care and emergency services, as well as a bridge to specialized care outside the community. The goal of this review was to demonstrate how the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences supports and empowers rural hospitals through an alliance that provides cost savings through clinical networks, collaborative purchasing, and leveraged services; workforce recruitment and e...

Substance Use Disorders among Adolescents in the United States: 2000-2019
CONCLUSIONS: The study examined the epidemiology, risk factors, and common characteristics of hospitalized adolescent patients with SUDs. The high burden of psychiatric and medical comorbidities observed among this patient group warrants designing effective and comprehensive substance use prevention and treatment programs for youths.PMID:38307503 | DOI:10.14423/SMJ.0000000000001655 (Source: Southern Medical Journal)

Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Colectomy Outcomes for Inflammatory Bowel Disease
CONCLUSIONS: Colectomy outcomes for patients with CD in 2020 were similar or improved in comparison with those seen in 2019, whereas colectomies for UC saw a statistically but not clinically significant increase in the rate of repeat operations. Overall, these patients seem to have been well managed despite the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic-induced strain on the healthcare system.PMID:38307504 | DOI:10.14423/SMJ.0000000000001650 (Source: Southern Medical Journal)

Prevalence of Women in Medicine Programs at University-Based Internal Medicine Residency Programs
CONCLUSIONS: Few university-affiliated Internal Medicine residency programs have a WIM program specific to trainees. Given the gender inequity and evidence that supports early development of leadership skills and support networks, our findings highlight a possible gap in the residency training program infrastructure.PMID:38307506 | DOI:10.14423/SMJ.0000000000001649 (Source: Southern Medical Journal)

Exploring Communication about Fall Risk and Prevention between Internal Medicine Residents and Geriatric Patients: A Needs Assessment
CONCLUSIONS: Most patients have conversations about falling with their physicians, but discrepancies exist regarding who initiates them. Data from this study suggest that attendings may be instrumental in starting these conversations. Reminder systems and fall risk didactic curricula may increase resident-initiated fall discussions.PMID:38307507 | DOI:10.14423/SMJ.0000000000001652 (Source: Southern Medical Journal)

Help Me Help You: How to Request a Letter of Recommendation
South Med J. 2024 Feb;117(2):106-107. doi: 10.14423/SMJ.0000000000001647.ABSTRACTLetters of recommendation (LORs) are an essential component of a career in medicine. The process for obtaining certain letters, particularly those associated with scheduled periods of professional transition, often is governed by established institutional or specialty norms. The process of requesting LORs in more common scenarios-local or national awards, committee assignments, and leadership positions-many times is less clearly defined, however. Despite the important role that LORs play in professional development, the published literature on...
