Can Smart City Construction Enhance Citizens ’ Perception of Safety? A Case Study of Nanjing, China
AbstractThe construction of smart cities may bring positive and negative effects simultaneously on citizens ’ perception of safety (CPS), while previous studies in the field of smart city construction paied significant attention to safety-related technologies but ignored CPS. Therefore, this work developed an indicator set consisting of five primary and eleven secondary indicators. A model integrating analytical network process and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation was used to evaluate CPS in smart cities. Nanjing, a pilot smart city in China, was adopted as the case to demonstrate the proposed evaluation methodology. The ...

Evaluation for the Development of Urban Agglomeration Integration: A Case Study of Pearl River Delta
AbstractWith the advancement of urbanization, urban agglomerations have become a main carrier of China ’s development. As the ultimate stage of urban agglomeration, the realization of urban agglomeration integration (UAI) plays a dominant role in regional prosperity. Appropriate evaluation of UAI could monitor the integration level and guide its coordinated development. However, little attention ha s been paid to UAI evaluation research. To this end, this study proposes a comprehensive evaluation model to investigate UAI via the entropy method blended with TOPSIS. Furthermore, utilizing grey relational analysis (GRA), cr...

From the Referential Pattern of Universal Values (RPUV) to a new Index of Human Development (HDI)
AbstractThis work pursues two theoretical objectives: first, theinstrumental one: to report on a"Referential Pattern of Universal Values (RPUV)" that allows simple mathematical formulations on certain basic concepts in Sociology; and second, thefinalist: to propose, in the light of these formulations, a new"Human Development Index (HDI)" that can replace that of the United Nations and other organizations. This second objective will be based on three precise criticisms: first, because the known indices are limited to the sum of a few indicators, but they do not contemplate thetotality of"needs and v...

The Causal Relationship Between Volunteering and Social Cohesion: A Large Scale Analysis of Secondary Longitudinal Data
AbstractIt is often taken for granted that social cohesion and volunteering are inextricably related. Previous research suggests both that social cohesion creates a conducive environment for volunteering to emerge and that volunteering itself facilitates feelings of social cohesion. Despite this, much of the existing evidence on this relationship is limited to cross-sectional research that precludes any assessment of potential causality. In this paper we present a secondary analysis of two large scale and longitudinal social surveys in the UK: the Understanding Society Household Longitudinal Study and the Beyond Us and The...

The Political Effects of Economic Inequality: Evidence from Hong Kong
This study yields several important findings. Citizens’ perceived economic inequality is positively correlated with support for government redistribution and support for political autonomy. However, perceived economic ine quality is not associated with citizens’ propensity to join social protests. We find that political values and citizens’ identities influence their demand for political autonomy and propensity to join protests. Our study thus sheds fresh light on the effect of economic inequality on a developed economy. (Source: Social Indicators Research)
