Peanut meal and crude glycerin in lamb diets: meat quality and fatty acid profile
This study aimed to evaluate the effects on lamb meat quality of replacing the soybean meal and corn diet with peanut meal and crude glycerin. A total of 40 lambs, with an initial body weight of 17.15 ± 1.56 kg, were divided into four biodiesel by-product treatment groups: a no-treatment control, peanut meal, crude glycerin, and peanut meal + crude glycerin. The roughage-to-concentrate ratio was 40:60 in all diets. Peanut meal, crude glycerin, and their combination had no effect on the physicochemical characteristics of the meat, except the fatty acid profile. The meat from animals fed the diets with crude glyce...

Expression of lipogenic and milk protein genes in milk fat layer of goat after dietary supplementation of omega-3 rich linseed and chia oils
Publication date: Available online 19 February 2020Source: Small Ruminant ResearchAuthor(s): Ratan K. Choudhary, Jaspal S. Hundal, Manju Wadhwa, Shanti Choudhary, NeetikaAbstractPlant oil supplementation in animal diet is a reliable feeding strategy to enhance omega-3 fatty acids content in milk and meat. To investigate oil induced differential gene expressions of milk protein genes (LALBA, CSN2) and fat synthesis genes (CD36, XDH, ACACA, SCD, FABP3) in mammary epithelial cells, twelve Beetal goats were fed with control diet (CON) and linseed oil (LSO) or chia oil (CO) supplemented diets (1%) for sixty days. Total RNA was ...

Economic assessment of potential efficiency gains in typical lamb production systems in the alpine region by using local resources
Publication date: Available online 13 February 2020Source: Small Ruminant ResearchAuthor(s): C. Gazzarin, N. El BenniAbstractThe alpine region is very suitable for sheep farming, which keeps the landscape open and produces meat by using local resources. However, the market has more potential than currently realised, but the profitability of lamb production needs to be improved. Management changes would allow efficiency gains and could be implemented on farms in the short or medium term. Thus, based on traditional high-quality forage management in the Swiss alpine region, we analysed the profitability of lamb production sys...
