Clinicals and upper airway characteristics in obese children with obstructive sleep apnea
Conclusion The occurrence rate of OSA in this obese pediatric population was high. Adenotonsillar hypertrophy and a modified Mallampati index of class III/IV were the factors associated with OSA. (Source: Sleep Science)

Restless legs syndrome in adolescents: Relationship with sleep quality, cardiorespiratory fitness and body fat
Publication date: Available online 19 January 2017 Source:Sleep Science Author(s): Christoforos D. Giannaki, Georgios M. Hadjigeorgiou, George Aphamis, Marios Pantzaris, Giorgos K. Sakkas The aim of the current study was to investigate the relationship between restless legs syndrome (RLS) and cardiorespiratory fitness, body composition and sleep quality in a sample of adolescents. One hundred fifty seven volunteer adolescents (16.6±0.7 yrs) participated in the study. Sleep quality was assessed by the Pittsburg sleep quality index. Cardiorespiratory fitness was assessed by the 20m shuttle run test and body compositi...

Continuous positive airway pressure: Is it a route for infection in those with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea?
Conclusion This study shows that the use of CPAP, choice of mask and humidifier have no significant impact on the prevalence of infections and micro-organisms isolated. This is very reassuring to the physician prescribing CPAP therapy and users. (Source: Sleep Science)

Current and future treatment options for narcolepsy: A review
This article outlines evidence-based pharmacologic therapies, behavioral techniques, and psychosocial costs related to narcolepsy. Psychosocial factors, although frequently acknowledged, deserve further attention and awareness from researchers and providers. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine's (AASM) Quality Measure Drivers and potential future treatment options are also discussed. (Source: Sleep Science)

Sleep, melatonin, and the menopausal transition: What are the links?
Publication date: Available online 11 January 2017 Source:Sleep Science Author(s): Shazia Jehan, Giardin Jean-Louis, Ferdinand Zizi, Evan Auguste, Seitikurippu R. Pandi-Perumal, Ravi Gupta, Hrayr Attarian, Samy I. McFarlane, Rüdiger Hardeland, Amnon Brzezinski The pineal hormone melatonin plays an important role in the regulation of the circadian sleep/wake cycle, mood, and perhaps immune functions, carcinogensis and reproduction. The human circadian rhythm of melatonin release from the pineal gland is tightly synchronized with the habitual hours of sleep. Peri- and postmenopausal women often complain of diffi...

Environmental factors influencing biological rhythms in newborns: From neonatal intensive care units to home
Publication date: Available online 7 January 2017 Source:Sleep Science Author(s): Clarissa Bueno, Luiz Menna-Barreto Photic and non-photic environmental factors are suggested to modulate the development of circadian rhythms in infants. Our aim is to evaluate the development of biological rhythms (circadian or ultradian) in newborns in transition from Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) to home and along the first 6 months of life, to identify masking and entraining environment factors along development. Ten newborns were evaluated in their last week inside the NICU and in the first week after being delivered home; 6 b...

Neurocognitive game between risk factors, sleep and suicidal behaviour
Publication date: Available online 23 December 2016 Source:Sleep Science Author(s): Faustin Armel Etindele Sosso Sleep and lifestyles interact to allow the appropriate development of cerebral structures, and prevention of mood disorders. But just a hand of articles identified a precise relationship between these two above, and the probability to develop a suicidal behaviour. The aim of this study is to explore how the suicidal behaviour is associated in simultaneous with sleep components, psychological stress, depression, anxiety, well-being, addiction and global health of participants; and if it is also influenced by t...

Excess weight in regular aviation pilots associated with work and sleep characteristics
Conclusion It was concluded that the prevalence of overweight and obesity among the commercial airline pilots was high and represents a public health problem in this population. Excess weight was associated with time working night-shifts, difficulty relaxing after work, inadequate sleep on days off, having other chronic diseases, and physical inactivity. In this context, nutritional status can be regarded as the result of dynamic and complex interactions promoted by occupational, sleep and health factors. (Source: Sleep Science)

Post operative capnostream monitoring in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea symptoms – Case series
Publication date: Available online 13 December 2016 Source:Sleep Science Author(s): Vasanth Rao Kadam, Mazyar Danesh Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) patients on opioid analgesic have an increased incidence of postoperative respiratory complications; prevention of these may be possible with appropriate post-operative monitoring. We recruited 4 OSA patients who had general anaesthesia for orthopaedic and septoplasty surgery. They required Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) or oral opioids in the post-operative period, hence continuous Saturation of Oxygen (Spo2), End Tidal Carbon dioxide (EtCo2) monitoring on Capnostream ...

Per3 expression in different tissues of Cebus apella
We present a study of Per3 expression in six different tissues of the non-human primate Cebus apella (capuchin monkey). The aim of this study was to verify whether the expression of the Per3 gene in different tissues of capuchin monkey occurs in a circadian pattern, its phase and the phase relationships between these different tissues during the 24h of a day. We observed that gene expression oscillated in all of the tissues studied during this time period, although only the liver and muscle presented a robust circadian pattern. This preliminary study highlights the possibility of using Cebus apella as a model to study circ...
