Hypersomnia due to injury of the lower ventral ascending reticular activating system in a patient with intraventricular hemorrhage
A 74-year-old female underwent extraventricular drainage for an intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH) at the neurosurgery department of a university hospital (Fig. 1-A). She exhibited severe hypersomnia following IVH onset. At four weeks after onset, she was transferred to the rehabilitation department of the same hospital to undergo rehabilitation. Except for approximately three hours during daytime, she remained asleep. Her sleep abnormality was indicated as severe hypersomnia on the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (score = 23; maximum score = 24; cut off for severe hypersomnia = 10) [1]. (Source: Sleep Medicine)

Connecting clinical aspects to corticomotor excitability in restless legs syndrome: a TMS study
We assessed corticomotor excitability in the primary motor cortex (M1) of participants with moderate-to-severe restless legs syndrome (RLS) symptoms using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in relation to the clinical and sleep aspects of the disease. Thirty-five participants (20  F; mean age: 59.23 ± 1.66 years; range: 42–78 years) affected by primary RLS (off medications) and 31 age-matched controls (19 F; mean age: 57.90 ± 1.50 years; range: 43–79 years) underwent TMS following two nights of polysomnography (PSG). Connecting Clinical Aspects to Cortico-Motor Excitability in Restless Legs Syndrome: A TMS Study
We assessed cortico-motor excitability in the primary motor cortex (M1) of participants with moderate-severe restless legs syndrome (RLS) symptoms using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in relation to the clinical and sleep aspects of the disease. Thirty-five participants (20 F; mean age 59.23 ±1.66; range 42-78) affected by primary RLS (off medications) and 31 age-matched controls (19 F; mean age 57.90±1.50; range 43-79) underwent TMS following two nights of polysomnography (PSG). Paired-pulse TMS measures [short interval cortical inhibition (SICI), long interval cortical inhibition (L ICI), and intracortical fac...

Physical activity and sleep problems in 38 low- and middle-income countries
Although physical activity (PA) is associated with a reduction of a wide range of sleep problems, it remains uncertain whether complying with the international guidelines of 150 min of moderate to vigorous PA per week can reduce sleep problems in adults. This research investigated the relationship between compliance with the PA recommendations of the World Health Organization and sleep problems in 38 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The Interrelationship of Sleep and Depression: New Answers but Many Questions Remain
Depression is a highly prevalent and debilitating disease. One aspect of efforts to understand depression has focused on its relationship with sleep. Attempting to elucidate the interrelationship of sleep and depression remains an ongoing effort which to date and has produced an incomplete and complex picture. Sun et al. ’s findings, [1] in this issue of Sleep Medicine provide some new answers about this interrelationship, yet leave many questions unanswered. (Source: Sleep Medicine)

Correspondence of maternal and paternal perception of school-aged children's sleep with in-home sleep-electroencephalography and diary-reports of children's sleep
Parents are often the first to report children's sleep difficulties. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the accuracy of parent reports by examining the correspondence of maternal and paternal reports of children's sleep with in-home electroencephalography (EEG) sleep assessment and sleep diary reports. “Sleep Disordered Breathing and ECG R-wave to Radial Artery Pulse Delay, The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis”
Electrocardiography R-wave to Radial artery pulse delay (RRD) represents pulse transit time inclusive of pre-ejection period (PEP) and arterial pulse propagation time. RRD is proposed to largely reflect arterial stiffness when PEP is accounted for (shorter RRD = higher arterial stiffness). Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) causes intermittent hypoxemia and sympathetic activation, which negatively influence vascular function. We aimed to examine the association of measures of SDB with RRD. (Source: Sleep Medicine)
