X-Chromosome Dependent Differences in the Neuronal Molecular Signatures and Their Implications in Sleep Patterns
Biological factors and mechanisms that drive sex differences observed in sleep disturbances are understudied and poorly understood. The extent to which sex chromosome constitution impacts on sex differences in circadian patterns is still a knowledge void in the sleep medicine field. Here we focus on the neurological consequences of X-chromosome functional imbalances between males and females and how this molecular inequality might affect sex divergencies on sleep. In light of the X-chromosome inactivation mechanism in females and its implications in gene regulation, we describe sleep-related neuronal circuits and brain reg...

An Update on Sleep Duration, Obesity, and Mortality Risk in Women
Sleep health is an essential component to overall health. Because of numerous societal, economic, and biological factors, obtaining adequate sleep poses a unique challenge to aging women. Yet, women have been traditionally understudied in sleep research. An increasing body of research supports abnormal sleep duration as a risk factor for obesity, cardiovascular disease, and mortality. This review focuses specifically on 3 areas of the discussion of insufficient sleep in women: (1) the mysterious poor health of long sleepers, (2) the potential underlying mechanisms linking abnormal sleep duration and cardiometabolic health,...

Night Shift Work and Sleep Disturbances in Women
This scoping review aimed to synthesize evidence on sleep disturbances in female shift workers. The update Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews was used. Twelve studies were included, four of which used actigraphy to assess sleep duration, efficiency, and latency. Seven studies evaluated the quality of sleep and three verified the sleepiness of women. This review adds to the body of evidence as the findings are homogeneous and allow a robust conclusion, suggesting that night shift work may be a potential factor for adverse effects on sleep of female shift workers....

Integrative Approach to Managing Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Conventional therapies for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), including CPAP and oral appliances, offer the best opportunity for symptomatic improvement and reduction in OSA overall health impact. Integrative medicine brings conventional and complementary approaches together in a coordinated way. With rising obesity rates, weight loss and lifestyle programs seem to be the most favorable integrative methods to combine with conventional OSA therapies. Complementary and integrative approaches to OSA management are varied and, in conjunction with conventional methods, may offer some reduction in the apnea-hypopnea index (Source: S...

Sleep Deficiency and Cardiometabolic Disease
Epidemiologic studies have demonstrated that short sleep duration is associated with an increased risk of cardio-metabolic health outcomes including cardiovascular disease mortality, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome. Experimental sleep restriction studies have sought to explain these findings. This review describes the main evidence of these associations and possible mechanisms explaining them. Whether sleep extension reverses these now widely acknowledged adverse health effects and the feasibility of implementing such strategies on a public health level is discussed. (...

The Integration of the Maternal Care with Sleep During the Postpartum Period
Our entire life occurs in a constant alternation between wakefulness and sleep. The impossibility of living without sleep implies that any behavior must adapt to the need for sleep, and maternal behavior does not escape from this determination. Additionally, maternal behavior in mammals is a highly motivated behavior, essential for the survival of  the offspring. Thus, the mother has to adapt her physiology of sleep to the constant demands of the pups, where each species will have different strategies to merge these two physiological needs. However, all studied female mammals will experience sleep disturbances at some poi...

The Effects of Hormonal Contraceptives on the Sleep of Women of Reproductive Age
Research about the effects of hormonal contraceptives on sleep has been performed but is subjected to important levels of methodological heterogeneity. Hormonal contraceptives impact sleep, but the direction of this association is not clear. Most studies describe a negative sleep profile among contraceptive users, including increased sleepiness, insomnia symptoms, decreased sleep efficiency, and a reduced overall sleep quality. Hormonal intrauterine contraceptives are associated with less negative effects. More research on the field, especially randomized controlled trials, is needed to increase the level and certainty of ...

The Relationship Between Mood and Sleep in Different Female Reproductive States
This article reviews the current literature on the reciprocal relationships between mood and sleep across reproductive phases in women, such as menstrual cycle and related disorders, pregnancy, climacteric, and use of hormonal contraception and hormone replacement therapy. Mood and sleep symptoms seem to covary in relation to physiologic and pathologic reproductive conditions, although the relationship seems more clear for subjective than objective sleep. Insomnia as a Risk Factor for Substance Use Disorders in Women
Gender differences exist for both insomnia and substance use disorders. Women show a higher prevalence of insomnia and increased susceptibility to the effects of drugs than men. Importantly, a growing body of evidence suggests that insufficient sleep predicts and puts individuals at a higher risk for substance use and associated psychosocial problems. However, the role of insomnia in substance use disorders among women remains poorly understood. The present article discusses gender differences in insomnia and in substance use disorders and reviews evidence suggesting that an increased prevalence of insomnia may be a risk f...

The Cardiovascular Impact of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Women
Overall, cardiovascular diseases have many sex-related differences in prevalence, clinical presentation, and outcomes. A considerable amount of evidence suggests that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) increases the risk for several cardiovascular diseases. Only recently, the sex-related differences in cardiovascular outcomes gained interest in the literature. In this review, the authors discuss the current evidence addressing the cardiovascular impact of OSA in women. Particular attention is devoted to hypertension, target-organ damage, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and cardiovascular events (including mortality). A rese...
