Neurocognitive variability in schizophrenia spectrum disorders: relationship to real-world functioning
Publication date: June 2020Source: Schizophrenia Research: Cognition, Volume 20Author(s): Lars Helldin, Christine Mohn, Anna-Karin Olsson, Fredrik HjärthagAbstractNeurocognitive variability exists within the schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD) population, with subgroups performing at the same level as healthy samples Here we study the relationship between different levels of neurocognitive responding and real-world functioning. The participants were 291 SSD patients and 302 healthy controls that were assessed with a comprehensive neurocognitive battery. In addition, the patients were assessed with the Specific Level of ...

Six month durability of targeted cognitive training supplemented with social cognition exercises in schizophrenia
ConclusionsBoth TCT + SCT and TCT-only result in durable improvements in cognition, symptoms, and functional capacity six months post-intervention. Supplementing TCT with social cognitive training offers greater and enduring benefits in prosody identification and reward processing. These results suggest that novel cognitive training approaches that integrate social cognitive exercises may lead to greater improvements in reward processing and functioning in individuals with schizophrenia. Susceptibility to distraction during analogical reasoning in schizophrenia
Publication date: Available online 11 December 2019Source: Schizophrenia Research: CognitionAuthor(s): Hanna Kucwaj, Adam ChuderskiAbstractProportional analogies between four objects (e.g., a squirrel is to tree as a golden fish is to? aquarium) were examined in 30 schizophrenia patients and 30 healthy controls. Half of the problems included distracting response options: remote semantic associates (fishing rod) and perceptually similar salient distractors (shark). Although both patients and controls performed fairly accurately on the no-distraction analogies, patients’ performance in the presence of distractors was disto...

Evaluation of social cognitive measures in an Asian schizophrenia sample
ConclusionHere, we examined the psychometric properties of a comprehensive social cognition battery based on the SCOPE study in an Asian schizophrenia population. Continued evaluation and standardization of social cognitive measures are needed to refine our understanding of this construct in schizophrenia. (Source: Schizophrenia Research: Cognition)

Schizophrenia, recovery and the self: An introduction to the special issue on metacognition
Publication date: Available online 4 November 2019Source: Schizophrenia Research: CognitionAuthor(s): Paul H. Lysaker, Jennifer E. Keane, Sara Poirier Culleton, Nancy B. LundinAbstractIn this special issue, work is presented linking metacognition among persons with schizophrenia with a range of psychosocial outcomes including vocational functioning, empathy, motivation, self-evaluation, and other cognitive functions. This overview will highlight how these works allow for the quantitative study of processes which underpin alterations in self-experience in schizophrenia, which in turn allows self-experience to be studied as ...

Examining motion speed processing in schizophrenia using the flash lag illusion
Publication date: Available online 31 October 2019Source: Schizophrenia Research: CognitionAuthor(s): Mariia Kaliuzhna, Timo Stein, Philipp Sterzer, Kiley J. SeymourAbstractResearch on visual perception in schizophrenia suggests a deficit in motion processing. Specifically, difficulties with discriminating motion speed are commonly reported. However, speed discrimination tasks typically require participants to make judgments about the difference between two stimuli in a two-interval forced choice (2IFC) task. Such tasks not only tap into speed processing mechanisms, but also rely on higher executive functioning including w...

Theory of Mind (ToM) represents a core, impaired feature in both schizophrenia and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ToM in patients with ...

Impaired facial emotion perception of briefly presented double masked stimuli in violent offenders with schizophrenia spectrum disorders
In conclusion, that there were no specific emotion biases in the SSD group compared to healthy controls, but particular individuals may have greater impairments in facial emotion perception, being influenced by intellectual ability, psychomotor speed and medication dosages, rather than specifically emotion word understanding. This implies that both state and trait factors influence emotion perception in the aggressive SSD group and may reveal one source of potential misunderstanding of social situations which may lead to boundary violations and aggression. A systematic review of moderators of cognitive remediation response for people with schizophrenia
ConclusionsThere was no high-quality replicated evidence which identifies reliable moderators of CR response. Many moderators were not replicated or presented in single, underpowered studies. Studies also investigated moderators independently despite their potential to overlap (e.g. age and education). Future research should concentrate on evaluating, with sound studies, the role moderators may play in affecting CR treatment response. This information can inform who will benefit most from the therapy and help to improve the benefits of CR. (Source: Schizophrenia Research: Cognition)
