Ophthalmology Resident Surgical Training: Can We Do Better?
Publication date: Available online 8 December 2018Source: Saudi Journal of OphthalmologyAuthor(s): Abdullah M. AlfawazAbstractIn ophthalmology, surgical skills training is challenging for both teachers and residents. Teaching in an operating room is complicated by the fact that the attending faculty member is primarily an observer with limited ability to prevent surgical complications. With the recent modifications in residency curricula which include virtual reality surgical simulation and wet labs, the technical skills and clinical judgment can be taught and assessed without exposing the patient to extra risk. In this re...

Retinal Capillary Hemangioblastoma and Hemiretinal Vein Occlusion in a Patient with Primary Congenital Glaucoma: A Case Report
Publication date: Available online 8 December 2018Source: Saudi Journal of OphthalmologyAuthor(s): Abdulrahman F. AlBloushi, Ibrahim Taskintuna, Sawsan R. NowilatyAbstractThe presence of retinal capillary hemangioblastoma and cerebellar hemangioblastoma in the context of Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome (VHL) is not characteristically associated with other ophthalmologic conditions. Here, we report the case of a 22-yearold female with a history of bilateral primary congenital glaucoma who presented with a right juxtapapillary retinal capillary hemangioblastoma and an old hemiretinal vein occlusion in which the retinal capillary ...

Optical coherence tomography angiography measured capillary density in the normal and glaucoma eyes
ConclusionsDiagnostic ability of OCT-A derived peripapillary CD and ONH CD was moderate for differentiating between the normal and glaucomatous eyes. Diagnostic ability of even the best peripapillary average and inferotemporal sector for RPC CD and average and superonasal sector for the ONH CD was moderate. (Source: Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology)

Terson Syndrome with Persistent Vitreous Hemorrhage Following Traumatic Brain Injury
The objective of this study was to report clinical findings and surgical outcomes of 3 patients with persistent vitreous hemorrhage diagnosed as Terson syndrome (TS). Posterior segment changes, optical coherence tomography scans, fundus autofluorescence images, and fundus fluorescein angiography findings of patients were evaluated and pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) was performed on 3 eyes of three patients. All eyes operated after 6 months from the date of injury and final visual acuities were 20/200, 20/60 and 20/30. PPV is found as a safe and effective procedure for vitreous hemorrhage in TS. Delayed surgery in a young pati...

Spontaneous malignant glaucoma: case report and review of the literature
Publication date: Available online 7 December 2018Source: Saudi Journal of OphthalmologyAuthor(s): Julio González-Martín-Moro, Lourdes Iglesias-Ussel, Rosario Cobo Soriano, Yolanda Fernández Miguel, Inés Contreras MartínAbstractMalignant glaucoma usually occurs after anterior segment surgery (typically after glaucoma surgery). The aim of this article is to report a case of spontaneous malignant glaucoma (SpMG), which required phacovitrectomy for resolution and to review the cases of SpMG reported in modern literature. Only nine cases were identified. SpMG has no gender predilection and age at onset seems to be lower (...

Comparison of manual and femtosecond laser arcuate keratotomy procedures for the correction of post-keratoplasty astigmatism
ConclusionFSL assisted AK procedure is comparable or to a certain extent better regarding safety and efficacy than manual AK procedure. Postoperatively, FSL resulted in better outcomes of UCVA, BCVA, refractive cylinder and keratometric astigmatism compared to the manual AK procedures; although, the difference between the groups was not statistically significant. Incidence and pattern of dry eye after cataract surgery
ConclusionIncidence of dry eye is higher in SICS than phacoemulsification due to tear film instability. The clinicians should be conscious about dry eye symptoms and signs in an otherwise healthy eye after cataract surgery. (Source: Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology)

Vitrector Induced Lens Injury During Peripheral Iridectomy in Implantable Collamer Lens Surgery
Publication date: Available online 22 October 2018Source: Saudi Journal of OphthalmologyAuthor(s): Rawan S. Alshabeeb, Saad S. AlharbiAbstractA 38-year-old female underwent bilateral implantable collamer lens (ICL) implantation for hyperopic astigmatism. While performing intraoperative peripheral iridectomy (PI), iris and anterior lens capsule was drawn to anterior vitrectomy cutter which result in large PI and injury to anterior lens capsule. Anterior lens capsule injury closed by fibrosis and the patient has 20/20 vision and static traumatic lens changes without any undesirable sequelae at the last follow up. Performing ...
