The processometric consensus Rorschach Test (pCRT-II) – An improved evaluation system: A new method for investigating the functioning of couple relationships.
We present the development and first psychometric evaluation of the processometric Consensus Rorschach Test II (pCRT-II), which introduces several innovations to previous coding systems. Using the pCRT-II, couple communication can be assessed on dimensions of dominance, constructiveness, and emotional closeness. Intercoder reliability was demonstrated using intraclass correlations in three coders’ 15 pCRT-II protocols. Results showed that trained coders can code the three pCRT-II dimensions reliably. Moreover, we assessed the interactions of 155 heterosexual couples using the pCRT-II. Internal consistency tests of the sc...

Editorial.
Rorschachiana, Vol 45(1), 2024, 1-3; doi:10.1027/1192-5604/a000177While editing the articles contained in this issue of Rorschachiana, the author was reminded of some contributions that have previously appeared in this journal. Acklin (2024) offers a novel perspective on the life of H. Rorschach, of his thinking and ideas developed around the time that he created his inkblots, hence complementing the historical part of the answer to “Why does the Rorschach work?” Acklin’s work called to mind a research thread that has recently regenerated interest in the test’s origins aiming to reconstruct the original view that H...

The parallel series—The Behn–Rorschach Inkblot Test.
This article examines the historical background of the Behn-Rorschach Test based on new document translations, including the dissertation (Psychische Schüleruntersuchngen mit dem Formdeutversuch) conducted by H. Behn-Eschenburg under Hermann Rorschach’s direct supervision and published in 1921. The Behn-Eschenburg dissertation was published at the same time and is a companion piece to Psychodiagnostics. The dissertation project applied Rorschach’s clinical theory and coding scheme to a duplicate set of inkblots (“the parallel series”) in a sample of 209 13–15-year-olds. The article reviews the newly translated c...

Persistence and cessation of nonsuicidal self-injury under psychotherapy.
This study examines factors associated with recovery from nonsuicidal self-injury, comparing the characteristics of nonsuicidal self-injury behavior, clinical history, and psychological features of one group of patients who recovered from nonsuicidal self-injury within 12 months of psychotherapy and one group of patients who did not. Both groups received three components of treatment: feedback on psychological assessment results, psychoeducation on stress and emotional control, and acquisition of stress-coping skills. The Rorschach Comprehensive System was used for the measurement of participants’ psychological character...

Exploring the utility of the Rorschach test in predicting weight loss after bariatric surgery.
Rorschachiana, Vol 45(1), 2024, 30-63; doi:10.1027/1192-5604/a000170Bariatric surgery (BS) is an effective approach to treat severe obesity, which should include multidisciplinary care. Prior to surgery, candidates for BS usually undergo a psychological assessment based mostly on self-report of clinical symptoms. However, the results of this assessment are not always sufficient to predict outcomes. Therefore, this study examined the potential of a multimethod approach to assessing patients seeking BS using both self-report and performance-based measures of cognitive and affective functioning. A sample of 50 women who had a...

Seeing eye-to-eye: Internal consistencies of eye-tracking variables during Rorschach administration.
Rorschachiana, Vol 45(1), 2024, 4-29; doi:10.1027/1192-5604/a000169Considering the continuing interest in the use of eye-tracking technology for study of the Rorschach response process, the present study examines the internal consistencies for several eye-tracking indices during Rorschach administration. Many experimental psychologists have recently maintained that researchers should be interested in and report the internal consistency statistics of performance measures, including eye tracking in order to improve effect size, the power of hypothesis testing, and the replicability of findings. In the current study, eye-trac...

The theory of Hermann Rorschach.
Rorschachiana, Vol 44(2), 2023, 193-213; doi:10.1027/1192-5604/a000173We trace the development of Hermann Rorschach’s ideas, from his early experiments, interests, and his medical thesis (1912) on reflex hallucinations to the writing of Psychodiagnostics (1921) in order to demonstrate that he was in the process of constructing a global theory of personality. The key to his experimentation with inkblots was the notion of representational or perceptual conflict, the psychological functioning of the tested person being reflected in the way responses are chosen. He conceived personality as a dynamic structure with a psychic ...

The Rorschach – from its origins to the future: Images in the making.
Rorschachiana, Vol 44(2), 2023, 176-192; doi:10.1027/1192-5604/a000161The Rorschach occupies a unique place in the history of culture and of clinical psychology. While it originated in the tradition of divinatory or pictorial practices, it was also part of the renewal of expression at the turn of the 20th century in the field of psychopathology as well as in artistic activities. It ushered in a new way to grasp humans in their expressive and projective whole. Its protocol provided the nascent clinical psychology with a complementary tool to contribute to diagnostics and to the study of the processes of change in psychother...

Inkblots and the life-world – toward a Rorschach phenomenology.
This article summarizes the historical influences on Hermann Rorschach’s Psychodiagnostics in light of new findings and the retranslation of his monograph by Keddy and colleagues (Rorschach, 2021). This exposition situates his work in the historical context of Swiss culture and psychiatry at the time of his training and research, identifies theoretical influences on his thought given findings from recent scholarship, and describes collegial relationships that impacted his experiment. The potential influence of philosophical phenomenology on Hermann Rorschach’s work, had he not passed away prematurely, is postulated giv...

The most obvious development of “the "basic idea”: The relationship between H. Rorschach’s inkblot test and C. G. Jung’s Word Association Test.
Rorschachiana, Vol 44(2), 2023, 119-135; doi:10.1027/1192-5604/a000165In a 1955 correspondence with Bruno Klopfer, C. G. Jung described his Word Association Test as “the first feeble attempt to examine complex mental attitudes by an experimental method” and Rorschach’s inkblot test as “the most obvious development of the basic idea.” We explore what Jung may have meant by “the basic idea,” in the context of what was happening in the new field of psychology in the 1890s and early 1900s. We suggest that in order to understand the significance of both tests, it is important to become aware of the “individual p...

On the background and foundations of psychodiagnostics.
Rorschachiana, Vol 44(2), 2023, 102-118; doi:10.1027/1192-5604/a000174During the century that has passed since its publication, there have been innumerable investigations on the Psychodiagnostics with relevant contributions in the codification, interpretation, and validity of its results. However, Rorschach’s work and his intentions remain in many respects little known. Knowledge of his research on the determinants and the foundations of their meanings is limited, although they are still valid and widely used. In this article the author studies the elaboration on the concepts of interpretation, the introduction of moveme...

Unravelling the mystery of the Rorschach Test by going back to its origins.
Rorschachiana, Vol 44(2), 2023, 99-101; doi:10.1027/1192-5604/a000172This editorial focuses on unravelling the mystery of the Rorschach Test by going back to its origins. Is there a theory behind the Rorschach Test? Or did Hermann Rorschach conceive his experiment blindly without any preconception (but then why did he call it an “experiment”)? This is the riddle that five authors investigate in this special issue. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: Rorschachiana)

The contribution of the collaborative use of the Rorschach Test in Togo.
Rorschachiana, Vol 44(1), 2023, 84-98; doi:10.1027/1192-5604/a000163The case study presented in this paper demonstrates the utility of a collaborative discussion of the Rorschach Test. In a context marked by dependence on the psychologist and lack of elaboration, discussing Rorschach responses with clients has the potential of engaging them actively in therapy. The present case concerns a young man with delusional disorder. The Rorschach’s collaborative discussion made it possible to build a stronger therapeutic alliance between the client and the psychologist. Indeed, this discussion helped the client to express homosex...

Pre- and postpsychotherapy assessment of a patient with retrograde amnesia: A Zulliger study.
Rorschachiana, Vol 44(1), 2023, 59-83; doi:10.1027/1192-5604/a000167Retrograde amnesia is the inability to recollect memories from a certain period. In the following case study, a patient was assessed with the Zulliger inkblot test in an initial assessment before psychotherapy. At termination of the psychotherapy, 42 months later, the test was readministered. At this point, the patient had no recollection of having taken the test before, due to retrograde amnesia following electroconvulsive treatment that was given some time before the initial assessment. This situation offers a unique opportunity to study changes in test ...

Understanding complexity as a construct and as a formally scored variable.
This article serves three goals. First, I review complexity in Rorschach responding. As a construct, complexity illuminates ways people differentially register experiences, which produces distinct patterns of expressed behavior when completing the task. Rorschach first described this dimension, creating novel terminology for it, and it was central to Rapaport, Gill, and Schafer’s system and Schachtel’s classic text. As a scored variable, Viglione and Meyer defined it when they were brought together by Exner to work on advancing the Comprehensive System (CS) through his Rorschach Research Council; later it was adopted i...
