Sociodemographic disparities in hypertension prevalence: Results from the first Portuguese National Health Examination Survey
ConclusionsA large majority of the adult Portuguese population are likely to reach blood pressure levels defined as hypertension in adulthood. Significant differences in hypertension prevalence were found according to gender, age and socioeconomic status, which highlights the importance of population strategies in public health policies.

Suboptimal lipid levels in clinical practice among Portuguese adults with dyslipidemia under lipid-lowering therapy: Data from the DISGEN-LIPID study
ConclusionThese observational data show that, despite their high-risk profile, more than half of patients under LLT, both men and women, did not achieve the recommended target levels for LDL-C, and a large proportion also had abnormal HDL-C and/or TG. This is a renewed opportunity to improve clinical practice in CV prevention.

Advantages and limitations of 18-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography in the diagnosis of infective endocarditis
Conclusions18F-FDG PET proved to be a sensitive technique with a high diagnostic value in patients with prosthetic valves and intracardiac devices and suspected IE. Its utility decreased dramatically in patients with suspected IE on native valves, in which TEE presented higher sensitivity and thus better diagnostic value.

Daily tobacco consumption and associated socioeconomic factors in the Portuguese population: National Health Interview Survey data 1987-2014
ConclusionsSmoking trends among men showed decreasing prevalences and diminishing inequalities. For women, inequalities were stable but there was an overall increase in prevalence. The unemployed and divorced had the highest smoking prevalences in both sexes. Smoking prevention and cessation policies in Portugal should take into consideration inequalities, particularly among men, and increasing consumption among women.

Positron emission tomography in ischemic heart disease
Publication date: August 2019Source: Revista Portuguesa de Cardiologia (English Edition), Volume 38, Issue 8Author(s): Beatriz Saldanha Santos, Maria João FerreiraAbstractNon-invasive assessment of ischemic heart disease remains a challenging task, even with a large armory of diagnostic modalities. Positron emission tomography (PET) is an advanced radionuclide technique that has been available for decades. Originally used as a research tool that contributed to advances in the understanding of cardiovascular pathophysiology, it is now becoming established in clinical practice and is increasingly used in the diagnosis and r...

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection: “To stent or not to stent, that is the question”
We present two cases of spontaneous coronary artery dissection with different initial approaches, highlighting the importance of a case-by-case assessment.

Pacemaker lead as an iatrogenic cause of right heart failure: Case report
We present the case of a 74-year-old woman with a history of hypertensive heart disease with preserved systolic function, atrial fibrillation and dyslipidemia. She had a DDDR pacemaker implanted in 2005 due to symptomatic complete atrioventricular block. The patient reported progressive fatigue, weakness, ascites with abdominal discomfort, and lower limb edema, accompanied by non-specific hepatic cholestasis on biochemical testing. Abdominal ultrasound revealed homogeneous hepatomegaly and dilatation of the inferior vena cava and upper hepatic veins, suggestive of congestive hepatopathy.Echocardiography revealed tricuspid r...

CODAP: A multidisciplinary consensus among Portuguese experts on the definition, detection and management of atherogenic dyslipidemia
ConclusionsThe experts involved in this study were shown to be familiar with the concept and the importance of atherogenic dyslipidemia. The few situations in which a consensus could not be found were mainly related to the interpretation and/or relevance of the available evidence.

Cardiovascular risk in HIV-infected individuals: A comparison of three risk prediction algorithms
ConclusionOn the basis of the three algorithms, we detected a high rate of high CV risk, particularly in patients under ART. The FRS was the algorithm that classified most patients in the high CV risk category (20.5%). In addition, a high prevalence of MS was identified in this patient group.
