Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies in Chinese patients with tuberculosis
CONCLUSIONS: ANCA positivity may be more related to vasculitis and immunological disorders than to a M. tuberculosis infection. Therefore, to improve diagnostic accuracy, patients with M. tuberculosis who are ANCA positive should be investigated for concurrent diseases, including the effects of drugs. Therefore, even in tuberculosis epidemic area, ANCA seropositivity, detected by ELISA, is still more suggestive of ANCA-associated vasculitides. Reduced functional capacity in patients with Chagas disease: a systematic review with meta-analysis
Abstract Reduced peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) is a common clinical finding in progressive Chagas disease. However, the disease stage in which functional impairment is detectable remains uncertain. The present study compared functional capacity between healthy controls and patients with different clinical forms of Chagas disease. A systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO database CRD42017058353) was conducted following a search of the MEDLINE, Web of Science, CINAHL, and LILACS databases from September to December 2017 for articles published in English, Spanish, or Portuguese, with no date restrictions. Mortality in patients with multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections: a meta-analysis
Abstract Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the leading cause of nosocomial infections with high mortality rates owing to the limited therapeutic options for multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MDRPA) and metallo-beta-lactamase (MBL)-producing strains. Herein, we present a meta-analysis exploring the association between MDRPA and S ão Paulo MBL-1 (SPM-1)-producing strains vs. mortality. Online databases were screened to identify studies published between 2006 and 2016. A total of 15 studies, comprising 3,201 cases of P. aeruginosa infection, were included. Our results demonstrated a higher mortality rate among patien...

Erratum: Para-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis in a patient in Brazil: a case report
We report the case of a 23-year-old immunocompetent patient who presented at the emergency department of a Brazilian hospital with epigastric pain and fever. After an investigation that included a computed tomography scan and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with biopsy, a diagnosis of mucormycosis was established. The patient exhibited favorable progress after surgery and antifungal therapy. Mucormycosis is a rare condition that usually affects immunocompromised patients, with a high mortality rate of up to 85%. Correct diagnosis and fast initiation of therapy are required to ensure improved patient prognosis. (Source: Re...

Evaluation of inflammatory biomarkers, carotid intima-media thickness and cardiovascular risk in HIV-1 treatment-naive patients
CONCLUSIONS The majority of participants had a low CVR (94%). After reclassification, considering the CIMT percentiles, 13 (19.4%) patients had medium/ high CVR, while 54 (80.6%) patients had low CVR. The difference between the proportions of CVR when considering the CIMT and its corresponding pe rcentile was statistically relevant. Body mass index was the only predictor of higher CVR (p = 0.03).
