[Adverse events in anesthesiology: analysis based on the Logbook tool used by specializing physicians in Brazil].
Authors: Pavão AL, Mattos S, Silva E, Laguardia J, Doellinger V, Curi E, Casali T, Takaschima A, Almeida A, Albuquerque M, Nunes R Abstract Logbook is a digital tool launched by the Brazilian Society of Anesthesiology in 2014 and has since been used. This tool allows physicians specializing in anesthesiology to record and store activities performed during the training period. This enabled a descriptive analysis of an extensive database of anesthetic procedures, as well as complications that occurred and were reported by these doctors. The present study includes the review of these data over a period of 2 yea...

Authors: Andrade RR, Oliveira-Neto OB, Barbosa LT, Santos IO, Sousa-Rodrigues CF, Barbosa FT Abstract BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Low back pain is a prevalent disease in the adult population, whose quality of life is considerably affected. In order to solve this problem, several therapies have been developed, of which ozone therapy is an example. Our objective in this study was to determine the effectiveness of ozone therapy for lumbar pain relief in adult patients compared to other therapies (steroid and placebo). METHOD: We usused randomized clinical trials to compare the effectiveness of ozone and other thera...

The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential analgesic action of 8% capsaicin cream for topical use in patients with myofascial pain syndrome. METHODS: Initially, cream formulations of PLA (Placebo) and CPS (Capsaicin 8%) were developed and approved according to the current requirements of the health authority agency. The 40 participating patients were randomly assigned to the PLA and CPS groups in a double-blind fashion. Before the creams were topically administered, according to the allocation group, the local anesthetic was used for a period of 50minutes directly in the area of interest. The cream was a...

In this study we aimed to investigate the effectiveness of analgesia nociception index as a tool for acute postoperative pain assessment. Our hypothesis was that analgesia nociception index may have good correlation with Numerical Rating Scale values. METHODS: A total of 120 patients of ASA physical status I and II undergoing any surgical procedure under halogenated-based anesthesia with fentanyl or remifentanil were enrolled for the study. At the 15th minute of arrival to the Postoperative Care Unit the patients' pain was rated on a 0?10 point Numerical Rating Scale. The patients' heart rate, ...

Authors: Yao HY, Liu TJ, Lai HC Abstract BACKGROUND: Left double-lumen endotracheal tubes have been widely used in thoracic, esophageal, vascular, and mediastinal procedures to provide lung separation. Lacking clear objective guidelines, anesthesiologists usually select appropriately sized double-lumen endotracheal tubes based on their experience with 35 and 37Fr double-lumen endotracheal tubes, which are the most commonly used. We hypothesized the patients with a left main bronchus of shorter length (

[Development of a multivariable predictive model for postoperative nausea and vomiting after cancer surgery in adults].
Authors: Yamada LAP, Guimarães GMN, Silva MAS, Sousa AM, Ashmawi HA Abstract BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Predicting postoperative nausea and vomiting risk is the cornerstone for deciding prophylaxis. Apfel's score does not define how long a person must be abstinent from smoking to be considered a non-smoker, and the use of intraoperative spinal opioids as a risk factor for predicting postoperative nausea and vomiting is also not addressed. The aim of this study was to quantify predicting postoperative nausea and vomiting risk by an ordinal smoking status and the use of intraoperative opioids (systemic or neur...

While our traditional method of analgesia for these patients has involved multimodal medications and a continuous lumbar plexus block, we report two cases of patients who received continuous lumbar erector spinae plane blocks. Both patients exhibited excellent pain control postoperatively and were able to discharge home on postoperative day one. This case report illustrates the possible utility of continuous erector ...

[Sufentanil during anesthetic induction of remifentanil-based total intravenous anesthesia: a randomized controlled trial].
Authors: Menezes DC, Vidal EIO, Costa CM, Mizubuti GB, Ho AMH, Barros GAM, Fukushima FB Abstract BACKGROUND: Postoperative pain represents an important concern when remifentanil is used for total intravenous anesthesia because of its ultrashort half-life. Longer acting opioids, such as sufentanil, have been used during induction of remifentanil-based total intravenous anesthesia as a means to overcome this shortcoming. However, the effectiveness and safety of such strategy still lacks evidence from randomized clinical trials. Hence, we aimed to assess the postoperative analgesic efficacy and safety of a single dose...
