Improving Communication Between Nurses and Resident Physicians: A 3-Year Quality Improvement Project
Breakdown in communication is a predictor of both nursing and surgical errors. In a 2013 survey at our institution, staff on the general surgery unit identified nurse-resident communication as the most important issue related to patient safety. Purpose: The purpose of this project was to examine the outcomes of using video education as an adjunct to standard discharge education for patients receiving percutaneous coronary intervention. We describe development and application of a utilization-based weighting system accounting for patient complexity using sociodemographic factors within primary care at a large multidisciplinary group practice. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted of 27 clinics across primary care serving more than 150 000 patients. Before and after implementation, we measured empanelment by comparing weighted to unweighted panel size and the number of physicians who could accept patients.
