Can Nurse-Based Management Screening Ensure Adequate Outcomes in Patients With Gestational Diabetes? A Comparison of 2 Organizational Models
Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is an impaired glucose tolerance with onset or first recognition during pregnancy. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical outcomes of a blood glucose monitoring protocol implemented by nurses and dietitians in a diabetes team to the previously established protocol of direct monitoring of GDM patients by a diabetologist. Methods: Two groups of patients were formed: The first group was based on a traditional protocol (P1: 230 patients) with patients' blood glucose constantly checked by a diabetologist. In the second structured group (P2: 220 patients) patien...

A Rapid Cycle Improvement Approach to Increase Patient Readiness at Their Scheduled Appointment Time
Background: Patient unpunctuality negatively affects quality care. We found that 39% of patients at an academic primary care center were not ready to be evaluated at their scheduled appointment time. Our aim was to reduce this to 20% in 3 months' time. Intervention: A multidisciplinary quality improvement team utilized quality improvement tools and methodology to determine that patient punctuality was a major modifiable factor contributing to the care gap. Reforming the scheduling process to include a built in 15-minute early arrival was implemented for acute visits for a 2-week trial period. Based on the successful r...

Statistical Process Control Charts for Monitoring Staphylococcus aureus Bloodstream Infections in Australian Health Care Facilities
Conclusion: The u-chart is an accessible method for monitoring HA-SAB, interpretable by a range of stakeholders. We demonstrate the benefit of NB modeling to account for overdispersion, providing an effective tool to avoid inappropriate flags while maintaining early detection of out-of-control systems throughout a wide range of health care settings. Lean-Oriented Layout Design of a Health Care Facility
Conclusions: There are 3 contributions here: the integration of lean principles into traditional health care facility design practices, the use of multicriteria decision analysis to refine the determination of the best layout solution, and the application of our propositions in a real case study. Process Mining for Quality Improvement: Propositions for Practice and Research
Conclusion: In summary, although process mapping is still valuable in quality improvement, we suggest increased focus on process mining. Process mining adds to quality improvement by providing a better understanding of processes in terms of uncovering (un)wanted variations as to obtain better system results.
