Dietary consumption of beef and red meat: a scoping review and evidence map on cognitive outcomes across the lifespan
CONCLUSIONS: Red meat and beef intake and cognition is largely understudied. There is a significant lack of replication across study designs, populations, exposures and outcomes measured. The quality of the research would be considerably enhanced by focused assessments of beef intake (and not red meat in general) and specific cognitive domains, along with improved adherence to reporting standards.PMID:37800340 | DOI:10.1017/S1368980023001933 (Source: Public Health Nutrition)

Intake of ultra-processed food, dietary diversity and the risk of nutritional inadequacy among adults in India
CONCLUSION: Reformulating ultra-processed food to reduce fat, sugar, and salt, increase micronutrients and behaviour change communication strategies that promote dietary diversity will improve micronutrient adequacy and diet quality.PMID:37781767 | DOI:10.1017/S1368980023002112 (Source: Public Health Nutrition)

Effects of front-of-package caffeine and sweetener disclaimers in Mexico: Cross-sectional results from the 2020 International Food Policy Study
CONCLUSIONS: There was high awareness and use of the sweeteners and caffeine disclaimers shortly after the warning labels were implemented. The sweetener disclaimer appears to be helping consumers modify their perceptions regarding industrialized beverages for children. Findings may help decision-makers improve the regulation and better target communication strategies.PMID:37781769 | DOI:10.1017/S1368980023002100 (Source: Public Health Nutrition)

Efficacy of a school-based education intervention on the consumption of fruit, vegetables, and carbonated soft drink among adolescents
CONCLUSION: Our school-based education intervention increased the daily frequency of fresh vegetables and fruit intake and decreased carbonated soft drink consumption among adolescents in the intervention group. There is a need for scaling up the intervention to engage students and empower them to develop healthy dietary habits.PMID:37781771 | DOI:10.1017/S1368980023002094 (Source: Public Health Nutrition)

Food literacy and diet quality in young vegans, lacto-ovo vegetarians, pescatarians, flexitarians and omnivores
CONCLUSIONS: We found moderate levels of food literacy across all dietary practices. The food literacy competencies, general nutrition knowledge, and food skills were associated with higher diet quality in our sample. Omnivores showed both the lowest general nutrition knowledge level and lowest diet quality scores. In contrast, both flexitarians and vegans scored highest on general nutrition knowledge and diet quality scores, despite being one of the less restrictive and one of the strictest plant-based dietary practices, respectively.PMID:37781775 | DOI:10.1017/S1368980023002124 (Source: Public Health Nutrition)

Household food insecurity in South Africa from 1999 to 2021: a metrics perspective
CONCLUSIONS: There is growing support for developing multi-variable approaches for food security research in sub-Saharan Africa. Future research should focus on finding the most appropriate combination of complementary metrics that would allow comparable data while holistically capturing food security and providing insight into the causes and consequences.PMID:37771235 | DOI:10.1017/S1368980023001878 (Source: Public Health Nutrition)
