Differentiating Sex and Gender Among Older Men and Women
Conclusions Calculating a gender score allows for the inclusion of a large number of variables, creating parsimonious models that are adaptable to different data sets and alternative gender definitions. Depending on the research question and the sample properties, the gender score can be used as either an adjustment or a matching variable. Early Psychological Interventions for Somatic Symptom Disorder and Functional Somatic Syndromes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions Our review shows that targeting SSD/FSS at an early stage represents a conceptual and practical challenge. Readily accessible interventions addressing transsymptomatic processes of SSD/FSS development and consolidation are highly needed. Future studies are needed to evaluate individuals with diverse symptoms, examine symptom history thoroughly, use placebo controls, and report outcomes completely to determine the efficacy of early psychological interventions for SSD/FSS. The Prevalence and Incidence of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Depression and Bipolar Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions People with depression are at an increased risk of both having and developing lower gastrointestinal disorders. These findings have important implications for how we understand, manage, and prevent this comorbidity in clinical practice. Further studies are needed to improve our understanding of the relationship between bipolar disorder and bowel disease as well as the role of psychotropic medication, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. The Interplay Between Stress and Fullness in Patients With Functional Dyspepsia and Healthy Controls: An Exploratory Experience Sampling Method Study
Objective Fullness is a cardinal symptom in functional dyspepsia (FD). The use of real-time symptom assessment might provide more insight into factors, such as daily stress, that can influence fullness. Therefore, this study aimed to use the experience sampling method (a real-time, repeated-measurement method making use of repeated questionnaires available at random moments for a limited amount of time) to assess the association between stress and fullness in patients with FD and healthy controls (HCs). Methods Thirty-five patients with FD (25 female, mean age = 44.7 years) and 34 HCs (24 female, mean age = 44.1...

Effects of Early Life Adversity on Pubertal Timing and Tempo in Black and White Girls: The National Growth and Health Study
Objective Although exposure to abuse in early life predicts earlier pubertal timing, especially for girls, it is unclear if this association generalizes to nonabuse stressors. In addition, the impact of race on the stress-maturation association remains unknown. To address these issues, we examined whether race moderates the effects of early adversity on pubertal timing and tempo using a longitudinal study design. Methods In a cohort of 9- and 10-year-old Black and White girls, pubertal (areolar and pubic hair) maturation was assessed annually for 7 years. In adulthood, 368 participants (186 Black, 182 White) rep...

Associations Between Maternal Distress, Cortisol Levels, and Perinatal Outcomes
Conclusions We found no association between subjective distress and cortisol measures irrespective of when in pregnancy the measures were taken. Furthermore, we found no evidence for a longitudinal association between psychological measures of stress or cortisol with lower birth weight, birth weight for gestational age, or gestational age. The Hippocampal–Ventral Medial Prefrontal Cortex Neurocircuitry Involvement in the Association of Daily Life Stress With Acute Perceived Stress and Cortisol Responses
Conclusions Taken together, the current study suggested a possible neurocircuitry of the hippocampus and ventral medial prefrontal cortex in the relationship between daily life stress and acute psychosocial stress. (Source: Psychosomatic Medicine)

Stress Measurement in Primary Care: Conceptual Issues, Barriers, Resources, and Recommendations for Study
Conclusions Although stress is recognized as a key contributor to chronic disease risk and mortality, additional research is needed to determine how and when instruments for assessing life stress might be useful in the primary care setting, and how stress-related data could be integrated into disease prevention and treatment strategies to reduce chronic disease burden and improve human health and well-being.
