The Effects of a Prenatal Mindfulness Intervention on Infant Autonomic and Behavioral Reactivity and Regulation
Conclusions Findings provide evidence that maternal participation in a short-term, group mindfulness-based intervention during pregnancy is associated with the early development of salutary profiles of biobehavioral reactivity and regulation in their infants. Because these systems are relevant for psychopathology and physical health, prenatal behavioral interventions may benefit two generations. (Source: Psychosomatic Medicine)

Perceptions of Doctors’ Empathy and Patients’ Subjective Health Status at an Online Clinic: Development of an Empathic Anamnesis Questionnaire
This study investigates whether patients’ evaluations of doctors’ empathy are associated with their health perceptions after a meeting at an online clinic and whether experiences of empathy could be enhanced by augmenting an automated anamnesis questionnaire completed before the visit. Methods A total of 209 adult patients agreed to participate in the study. First 103 patients filled out the regular version of the questionnaire (June–August 2019) and then 106 filled out the augmented version of the online anamnesis questionnaire (August–November 2019). Patients’ perceptions of doctors’ empathy were measu...

Association Between Subjective-Objective Discrepancy of Sleeping Time and Health-Related Quality of Life: A Community-Based Polysomnographic Study
This study aimed to investigate the existence of a difference in quality of life (QOL) between individuals with and without significant subjective-objective discrepancy (SOD) in total sleep time (TST). Methods From the Sleep Heart Health Study 2, 2540 individuals who had completed polysomnography, a morning sleep survey, and the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) were included in the analyses. The participants were classified as normoestimators (estimation of TST (Source: Psychosomatic Medicine)

Promoting Acceptance and Adherence to Noninvasive Ventilation in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Objective People with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may suffer from anxiety, depression, low quality of life, and cognitive deficits that could play a role in their clinical conditions. These situations could be worsened during the adaptation process to a new treatment such as noninvasive ventilation (NIV), which is often rejected or inappropriately used. The study aimed to analyze the impact of a brief psychological support intervention on adherence to NIV among patients with COPD. Methods A two-branch randomized controlled trial was conducted on 90 patients with COPD who had an indication for NI...

Synergistic Associations of Depressive Symptoms and Executive Functions With Longitudinal Trajectories of Diabetes Biomarkers Among Urban-Dwelling Adults Without Diabetes
We examined the synergistic associations of depressive symptoms and EFs with longitudinal trajectories of diabetes diagnostic criteria among middle-aged and older adults without diabetes. Methods Participants were 1257 African American and White, urban-dwelling adults from the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span study who were assessed up to three times over a 13-year period (2004–2017). At baseline, participants completed the Center for Epidemiological Studies—Depression scale and measures of EFs—Trail Making Test Part B, verbal fluency, and Digit Span Backward—for a composite E...

The Potential Mediating Effects of Inflammation on the Association Between Type D Personality and Coronary Plaque Vulnerability in Patients With Coronary Artery Disease: An Optical Coherence Tomography Study
Conclusions Inflammation activation is a potential mediator of the association between type D personality and plaque vulnerability. The negative affectivity component of type D personality might be particularly relevant to the inflammatory aspects of plaque vulnerability. (Source: Psychosomatic Medicine)

The Effects of Cold Exposure Training and a Breathing Exercise on the Inflammatory Response in Humans: A Pilot Study
Conclusions The combination of cold exposure training and a breathing exercise most potently attenuates the in vivo inflammatory response in healthy young males. Our study demonstrates that the immunomodulatory effects of the intervention can be reproduced in a standardized manner, thereby paving the way for clinical trials. Trial Registration:ClinicalTrials.gov identifiers: NCT02417155 and NCT03240497. (Source: Psychosomatic Medicine)

Relationship of Blood Pressure and White Matter Hyperintensity Burden With Level of and Change in Cognition in Older Black Adults
Conclusion Late-life diastolic BP was associated with faster rates of episodic memory decline in older Black adults; together with higher WMH burden, it (and MAP) lowered the point at which individuals begin their course of decline toward pathological aging. (Source: Psychosomatic Medicine)

Emotional Distress, Targeted Rejection, and Antibody Production After Influenza Vaccination in Adolescence
Objective The purpose of this study was to explore how both ongoing emotional distress and the experience of a targeted rejection over the past 6 months are associated with adolescents’ antibody response to influenza virus vaccination. We predicted that experiencing a targeted rejection would amplify the hypothesized negative association between emotional distress and antibody response after vaccination. Methods Adolescent participants (N = 148) completed two study visits (mean [standard deviation] days between visits = 27.4 [1.8]). At the first visit, they provided blood samples, were administered the seasona...
