Childhood adversities characterize the heterogeneity in the brain pattern of individuals during neurodevelopment
CONCLUSION: Adversities (particularly abuse) maximally influence the DMN during neurodevelopment and lead to the failure in the development of a coherent DMN system. While DMN's integrity is preserved in typical development, the age-dependent variability in atypically developing individuals is contrasting. The flexibility of DMN might be a compensatory mechanism to protect an individual in an abusive environment. However, such adaptability might deprive the neural system of the faculties of normal functioning and may incur long-term effects on the psyche.PMID:38509831 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291724000710 (Source: Psychological Medicine)

Do metacognitive therapies for schizophrenia-spectrum disorders work? A meta-analytic investigation
Psychol Med. 2024 Mar 21:1-9. doi: 10.1017/S0033291724000564. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRecent reviews and meta-analyses of metacognitive therapy for schizophrenia-spectrum disorder (SSD) have included uncontrolled studies, single-session interventions, and/or analyses limited to a single form of metacognitive therapy. We sought to evaluate the efficacy of metacognitive therapies more broadly based on controlled trials (CT) of sustained treatments. We conducted a pre-registered meta-analysis of controlled trials that investigated the effects of meta-cognitive therapies on primary positive symptom outcomes, and secondar...

A subtype of schizophrenia patients with altered methylation level of genes related to immune cell activity
CONCLUSIONS: In summary, this study demonstrated a subtype of schizophrenia patients across both FES and LTS cohorts, defined by widespread alterations in methylation profile of genes related to immune function and distinguishing clinical features. This finding illustrates the promise of novel treatment strategies targeting immune dysregulation for a subpopulation of schizophrenia patients.PMID:38505948 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291724000667 (Source: Psychological Medicine)

Comprehensive elucidation of resting-state functional connectivity in anorexia nervosa by a multicenter cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Stronger rsFCs in regions containing mainly DLPFC, and weaker rsFCs in regions containing primarily cerebellum, within temporal lobe, between posterior fusiform cortex and lateral part of visual network, and between ACC and thalamus, may represent categorical diagnostic markers discriminating AN patients from HC.PMID:38500410 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291724000485 (Source: Psychological Medicine)

Personality disorder coverage, prevalence, and convergence: do the < em > DSM-5 < /em > 's two models of personality disorder identify the same patients?
CONCLUSIONS: Results provide strong evidence that the AMPD yields the same overall prevalence of PD as the current model and, further, identifies largely the same overall population. It also addresses well-known problems of the current model, is more consistent with the ICD-11 PD model, and provides more complete, individualized characterizations of persons with PD, thereby offering multiple reasons for its implementation in clinical settings.PMID:38501282 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291724000357 (Source: Psychological Medicine)

Childhood correlates and young adult outcomes of trajectories of emotional problems from childhood to adolescence
CONCLUSIONS: Childhood emotional problems were common, but those whose symptoms improved over time were not at increased risk for adverse adult outcomes. In contrast, individuals with persistent or adolescent-increasing emotional problems had a higher risk of mental ill-health and social impairment in young adulthood which was especially pronounced for those with persistent emotional problems.PMID:38494928 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291724000631 (Source: Psychological Medicine)

Precision psychiatry: predicting predictability
Psychol Med. 2024 Mar 18:1-10. doi: 10.1017/S0033291724000370. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrecision psychiatry is an emerging field that aims to provide individualized approaches to mental health care. An important strategy to achieve this precision is to reduce uncertainty about prognosis and treatment response. Multivariate analysis and machine learning are used to create outcome prediction models based on clinical data such as demographics, symptom assessments, genetic information, and brain imaging. While much emphasis has been placed on technical innovation, the complex and varied nature of mental health presents s...

Assessment of optimal combinations of therapeutic probiotics for depression, anxiety, and stress
CONCLUSION: The NMA revealed that Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium had prominent efficacy in the treatment of individuals with anxiety, depression, and combination of Lactobacillus + Bifidobacterium had a similar effect. With few direct comparisons available between probiotic species, this NMA may be instrumental in shaping the guidelines for probiotic treatment of psychological disorders.PMID:38497101 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291724000679 (Source: Psychological Medicine)

CONCLUSIONS: Decreased coupling of dorsal fronto-striatal regions indicates that circuit-based abnormalities persist at rest and suggests this network may be a potential treatment target.PMID:38497102 | DOI:10.1017/S003329172400031X (Source: Psychological Medicine)

The silent epidemic of loneliness: identifying the antecedents of loneliness using a lagged exposure-wide approach
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that subjective ratings of physical and psychological health and perceived social environment (e.g. chronic pain, self-rated health, purpose in life, anxiety, neighborhood cohesion) are more strongly associated with subsequent loneliness. Yet, objective ratings (e.g. specific chronic health conditions, living status) show less evidence of associations with subsequent loneliness. The current study identified potentially modifiable predictors of subsequent loneliness that may be important targets for interventions aimed at reducing loneliness.PMID:38497115 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291723002581 (So...
