Decision making capacity for treatment in psychiatric inpatients: a systematic review and meta-analysis
This study aimed to update Okai's research by conducting a systematic review with meta-analysis to address heterogeneity. We performed a systematic search across four databases, yielding 5351 results. We extracted data from 20 eligible studies on adult psychiatric inpatients, covering DMC assessments from 2006 to May 2022. A meta-analysis was conducted on 11 papers, and a quality assessment was performed. The study protocol was registered on PROSPERO (ID: CRD42022330074). The proportion of patients with DMC for treatment varied widely based on treatment setting, the specific decision and assessment methods. Reliable capaci...

External cues improve visual working memory encoding in the presence of salient distractors in schizophrenia
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that control of attentional selection is impaired in schizophrenia. We demonstrate that additional top-down information significantly improves performance in PSZ. The observed deficit in attentional control suggests a disturbance of GABAergic inhibition in early visual areas. Moreover, our findings are indicative of a mechanism for enhancing attentional control in PSZ, which could be utilized by pro-cognitive interventions. Thus, the current paradigm is suitable to reveal both preserved and compromised cognitive component processes in schizophrenia.PMID:38436135 | DOI:10.1017/S00332917240...

Emotion dynamics in current and remitted depression: an ecological momentary assessment study
CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that a number of abnormalities in emotion and reward functioning persist after a depressive episode resolves, however, the tendency to experience higher levels of sadness, greater range of a variety of negative emotions, and more variable and persistent low interest/motivation are exacerbated during depressive episodes. Conversely, greater intensity and persistence of some negative emotions (anxiety, upset) and blunted positive emotions appear to equally characterize depression in both the symptomatic and remitted state.PMID:38433585 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291724000369 (Source: Psychological Medicine)

Examining the association between prenatal and perinatal adversity and the psychotic experiences in childhood
CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence that certain prenatal medical complications (severe nausea, severe anemia), cumulative number of prenatal medical complications, and maternal behaviors (smoking during pregnancy), increased frequency of distressing PEs in childhood. Maternal smoking and substance use, as well as cumulative number of prenatal complications increased risk of persistent PEs.PMID:38433592 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291724000187 (Source: Psychological Medicine)

Models of mild cognitive deficits in risk assessment in early psychosis
CONCLUSIONS: The MCD exhibits variations in domains, patterns, and weights across different stages of early psychosis and diverse target populations. Emphasizing precise risk assessment, our findings highlight the importance of tailored MCD models for different stages and risk levels.PMID:38433595 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291724000382 (Source: Psychological Medicine)

Environmental risk factors for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder from childhood to diagnosis: a Swedish nested case-control study
CONCLUSIONS: There were both shared and unique environmental risk factors: SUDs and ACEs were risk factors for both disorders, while infections were more strongly associated with BD and urbanicity with SCZ.PMID:38425272 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291724000266 (Source: Psychological Medicine)
