Personal hygiene in individuals with a diagnosis of schizophrenia: the role of gender, clinical characteristics, and the body self
CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with a diagnosis of schizophrenia in a stable mental state manifest deficits in personal hygiene that are related not so much to negative body image as to a disturbed body experience. The determinants of hygiene deficits in schizophrenia are gender-dependent. The study did not include individuals with severe illness, which helps to understand the lack of correlation between negative symptoms of schizophrenia and PH in the male study group.PMID:38345123 | DOI:10.12740/PP/152317 (Source: Psychiatria Polska)

The place of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in the treatment of depressive disorders in children and adolescents. Recommendations of the Main Board of the Polish Psychiatric Association. Part 1 - Clinical efficacy and areas of application
Psychiatr Pol. 2023 Oct 31;57(5):899-916. doi: 10.12740/PP/171463. Epub 2023 Oct 31.ABSTRACTIn the adult population of patients with major depression, both psychotherapeutic and pharmacological interventions are effective, but antidepressants remain the mainstay of treatment. In the case of child and adolescent psychiatry, there is still controversy over whether to use pharmacological interventions and which drug to prefer. Although psychotherapeutic treatment is still considered a first-line treatment, antidepressants are widely used to treat depression in children and adolescents, and the number of medications prescribed...

The place of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in the treatment of depressive disorders in children and adolescents. Recommendations of the Main Board of the Polish Psychiatric Association. Part 2 - pharmacological properties and safety of use
Psychiatr Pol. 2023 Oct 31;57(5):917-940. doi: 10.12740/PP/171464. Epub 2023 Oct 31.ABSTRACTThe aim of the study was to review studies evaluating the pharmacodynamic properties of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and their safety. SSRIs in patients <18 years of age sometimes have different pharmacokinetic parameters compared to adults, which has a significant impact on their effectiveness and tolerance. The concentration of fluoxetine, fluvoxamine or paroxetine is about 2 times higher in children compared to adolescents and adults, which should be taken into account at the stage of both drug introduction ...

Evolutionary aspects of bipolar affective illness
Psychiatr Pol. 2023 Oct 31;57(5):941-953. doi: 10.12740/PP/159424. Epub 2023 Oct 31.ABSTRACTBipolar affective illness (bipolar disorder - BD), also known as manic-depressive illness, is characterized by periodic opposite states of mood, activity, and motivation (mania and depression) sometimes of extreme intensity. The risk of pulmonary embolism in the context of various clinical situations and management in psychiatric patients
This article discusses how components of Virchow's triad are activated by symptoms of mental disorders, i.e. psychosis, anxiety, depression and catatonia. The current state of knowledge on the thromboembolic risk associated with coercive measures that involve physical restraint of four limbs is presented. Current data on potentially thrombotic effect of antipsychotics, antidepressants and electroconvulsive therapy are summarised. Recommendations for the prevention of PE in patients with mental disorders are discussed.PMID:38345121 | DOI:10.12740/PP/152585 (Source: Psychiatria Polska)

Impairment of social cognition in comparative studies of patients with schizophrenia and their healthy siblings
Psychiatr Pol. 2023 Oct 31;57(5):967-982. doi: 10.12740/PP/152271. Epub 2023 Oct 31.ABSTRACTSocial cognition impairment is a significant neurocognitive disturbance observed during clinical course of schizophrenia. Deficits in this field observed in first- degree unaffected relatives have been suggested as a potential endophenotype. The main purpose of this study was to review the range of published articles on this topic, mainly from the last decade (2010-2021). A search in the online databases PubMed, Medline and Polish Medical Library using following keywords: schizophrenia, healthy sibling, social cognition, theory of m...
