Primary care providers' perceptions on the integration of community-led advance care planning activities with primary care: a cross-sectional survey
CONCLUSIONS: Community-led ACP activities were perceived to be useful to engage and prepare patients to continue ACP discussions with clinicians. Efforts should be made to establish and integrate community-based ACP initiatives within existing primary care systems to ensure awareness and uptake.PMID:37743490 | PMC:PMC10519084 | DOI:10.1186/s12875-023-02144-z (Source: Primary Care)

GP perspectives on a psychiatry phone line in Western Australia's Great Southern region: implications for addressing rural GP workload
CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that a telephone line operated by trusted, local psychiatrists with knowledge of the local mental health ecosystem of support can reduce rural GP workload through building confidence and strengthening personal agency, helping GPs navigate the ethical and clinical labyrinth of managing patient complexity in rural settings.PMID:37743540 | DOI:10.1071/PY23039 (Source: Primary Care)

The Use of Telemedicine to Improve Hypertension in an Urban Primary Care Clinic and Predictors of Improved Blood Pressure
CONCLUSION: The study demonstrated telemedicine as a great tool to prevent overtreatment of hypertension as significant difference between in-office BP and home BP during telehealth visits was noted. We did not see a significant change in blood pressure when comparing home BP at first telehealth visit to the last in-person clinic BP at end of study period.PMID:37740500 | PMC:PMC10517597 | DOI:10.1177/21501319231199014 (Source: Primary Care)

Colposcopy in the Primary Health Care: A Scoping Review
CONCLUSION: Only a few countries have investigated the use of colposcopy in primary care. Thus, barriers and the care structure for this implementation to be successful in reducing cervical cancer incidence and mortality should be identified.PMID:37740513 | PMC:PMC10517605 | DOI:10.1177/21501319231198942 (Source: Primary Care)

The Impact of Primary Care Practice Models on Indicators of Unplanned Health Care Utilization for Ontario Adults Newly Diagnosed With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Retrospective Cohort Study
CONCLUSIONS: Primary care practice models are complex, influenced by remuneration and organizational structures, reinforcing the need for further research to enhance our understanding of primary care reforms. Furthermore, given the growing shortage of primary care providers, patients with COPD and other chronic conditions are particularly vulnerable.PMID:37740528 | PMC:PMC10517618 | DOI:10.1177/21501319231201080 (Source: Primary Care)

Chronic fatigue syndromes: real illnesses that people can recover from
Scand J Prim Health Care. 2023 Sep 23:1-5. doi: 10.1080/02813432.2023.2235609. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe 'Oslo Chronic Fatigue Consortium' consists of researchers and clinicians who question the current narrative that chronic fatigue syndromes, including post-covid conditions, are incurable diseases. Instead, we propose an alternative view, based on research, which offers more hope to patients. Whilst we regard the symptoms of these conditions as real, we propose that they are more likely to reflect the brain's response to a range of biological, psychological, and social factors, rather than a specific disease proc...

A cross-country qualitative analysis of teachers' perceptions of asthma care in sub-Saharan Africa
This study aimed to explore teachers' perceptions of asthma care across six African countries. We conducted focus group discussions (FGDs) using a semi-structured interview guide. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically. FGDs were conducted in Kumasi(Ghana), Blantyre (Malawi), Lagos (Nigeria), Durban (South Africa), Kampala (Uganda), and Harare (Zimbabwe) between 01 November 2020 and 30 June 2021. We identified two key themes related to asthma care; barriers to asthma care and suggestions to improve the care of adolescents with asthma. Barriers reported by teachers included a lack of ...

Timely support for promoting mental wellbeing among families with young children -an interview study exploring the experiences of multi-professional practitioners in Finland
CONCLUSIONS: The study highlights the importance of reaching families in a timely manner in order to promote mental wellbeing and prevent mental health problems. The findings, bringing to the fore the practitioners' own experiences and views, suggest how current practice could be developed in order to safeguard mental health and wellbeing for all families with young children. The practitioners' views and experiences are key components when building future sustainable and proactive health and social care services.PMID:37741972 | PMC:PMC10517518 | DOI:10.1186/s12875-023-02156-9 (Source: Primary Care)

Patients with fibromyalgia in Finnish healthcare center - one-year follow up
CONCLUSION: With these results, we cannot conclude that ÖMPSQ predicts the patient's severity of symptoms. On the contrary, we can conclude that antidepressants and/or psychological therapy might reduce fibromyalgia symptoms for depressed patients with fibromyalgia. Patients with fibromyalgia might benefit from clinical evaluation and modifications to the treatment plan if necessary.PMID:37738389 | DOI:10.1080/02813432.2023.2259960 (Source: Primary Care)

Sociodemographic Factors, Mental Health, and Emotional Eating Associated With Concern for COVID-19 Contagion in Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Study
CONCLUSION: These findings provide resources for future research on the comprehensive well-being of nursing staff by exploring various sociodemographic aspects and mental conditions associated with greater concern about COVID-19. Meanwhile, years of experience and emotional eating behavior were associated with lower concern about COVID-19. Future studies could incorporate this information to preserve the mental and physical health of nurses in the face of potential occupational threats.PMID:37731344 | DOI:10.1177/21501319231200400 (Source: Primary Care)

Role of Primary Care in Bridging Gaps in the Health Care System for Vulnerable Children in the United States of America: A Sickle Cell Disease Case Study
We present a case of a 12-month-old female who is an example of one of the many patients who despite having undergone newborn screening, fell through the cracks due to social barriers including housing instability, food insecurity, and lack of access to transportation. This paper emphasizes the need for and provides a real example of the benefit of access to longitudinal primary care for vulnerable patients. We also demonstrate the role of primary care in clearing the care gaps and coordinating services quickly to ultimately prevent life-threatening complications specifically for children with previously undiagnosed chroni...
