Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the quality of diabetes care: Insights from longitudinal data in Switzerland
Prim Care Diabetes. 2023 May 1:S1751-9918(23)00092-X. doi: 10.1016/j.pcd.2023.04.009. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn this population-based cohort study on diabetes care, self-reported quality indicators measured just before (2019) and during (2021) the COVID-19 pandemic were comparable, apart from a modest increase in seasonal influenza immunization and a small decline in patient-centeredness of care in 2021.PMID:37147223 | DOI:10.1016/j.pcd.2023.04.009 (Source: Primary Care)

The Impact of the Affordable Care Act Medicaid Expansion on Acute Diabetes Complications Among Community Health Center Patients
CONCLUSION: We found a significantly greater rate of visits for abnormal blood glucose in patients receiving care in expansion states relative to patients in CHCs in non-expansion states starting in 2015. Additional resources for these clinics, such as the ability to provide blood glucose monitoring devices or mailed/delivered medications, could substantially benefit patients with diabetes.PMID:37139559 | PMC:PMC10161334 | DOI:10.1177/21501319231171437 (Source: Primary Care)

Response to insulin glargine 100  U/mL treatment in newly-defined subgroups of type 2 diabetes: Post hoc pooled analysis of insulin-naïve participants from nine randomised clinical trials
CONCLUSIONS: IGlar-100 lowered hyperglycemia similarly in all T2DM subgroups, but level of glycemic control, insulin dose, and hypoglycemia risk differed between subgroups.PMID:37142540 | DOI:10.1016/j.pcd.2023.04.010 (Source: Primary Care)

Factors contributing to the low number of blood donors among employed residents in Oshatumba village, Namibia
CONCLUSION: The findings of this study revealed that individual health status, religious beliefs and misconceptions associated with blood donations are among the factors that cause a low level of blood donations.Contribution: The research findings can be used to develop strategies and targeted interventions to increase the number of blood donors.PMID:37132559 | PMC:PMC10157433 | DOI:10.4102/phcfm.v15i1.3680 (Source: Primary Care)

Risk factors for mild cognitive impairment among older adults in a hospital in southern Nigeria
CONCLUSION: Mild cognitive impairment was prevalent among older adults in this study and was found to be significantly associated with low level of education.Contribution: It is therefore recommended that screening for MCI and known risk factors should be prioritized at geriatric clinics.PMID:37132560 | PMC:PMC10157409 | DOI:10.4102/phcfm.v15i1.3942 (Source: Primary Care)

Clinical recommendations for chronic musculoskeletal pain in South African primary health care
CONCLUSION: A multidisciplinary panel endorsed 41 multimodal clinical recommendations as applicable and feasible for the PHC of adults with CMSP, in SA. Although certain recommendations were endorsed, they may not be readily implementable in SA because of context factors.Contribution: The study forms the basis of a model of care for contextually relevant PHC of CMSP. Future research should explore factors that could influence the uptake of the recommendations into practice to optimise chronic pain care in SA.PMID:37132561 | PMC:PMC10157417 | DOI:10.4102/phcfm.v15i1.3929 (Source: Primary Care)

Investigating the rationale for COPD maintenance therapy prescription across Europe, findings from a multi-country study
This study aims to understand healthcare professionals' thoughts and motivations about optimal management and treatment of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We conducted a DELPHI survey through an online questionnaire distributed to 220 panellists from six European countries and a discrete choice experiment to describe the relationship between selected clinical criteria and the initial COPD treatment of choice. One hundred twenty-seven panellists (general practitioners [GPs] and pulmonologists) completed the survey. Despite the familiarity and use (89.8%) of the GOLD classification for initial tre...
