Diabetes Mellitus: lessons from COVID-19 for Monkeypox infection
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is known to be linked to malfunctioning antiviral defense; however, its association with the severity of monkeypox is poorly understood. In this review, we discuss key immunological mechanisms in the antiviral response affected by poor glucose control that could impact the susceptibility and severity of monkeypox infection, leading to a heightened emphasis on the use of the available antidiabetic drugs. Helping smokers with diabetes quit: A scoping review of the interventions utilised, and the challenges and barriers to smoking cessation
Tobacco smoking is recognised as a priority in diabetes management, yet many individuals with diabetes continue to smoke beyond diagnosis. This paper identifies the most promising smoking cessation strategies by reviewing the literature reporting interventions carried out amongst this study population, and the challenges and barriers to smoking cessation. Stand-alone smoking cessation interventions which included pharmacotherapy were found to be more successful in achieving abstinence than interventions which included smoking cessation as part of a broader intervention for improving diabetes management. The underrecognized role of primary care physicians in the prevention and management of chronic kidney disease
The prevalence of end-stage renal disease is rising across the globe, with diabetes as the leading cause in half of those affected [1]. As a result of global industrialization with the popularity of unhealthy diets and physical inactivity, obesity and diabetes are epidemics affecting many individuals worldwide including the youth populations. The decline in the age of onset of diabetes and the increased risk of cardio-renal complications in young-onset diabetes are especially worrisome [2]. Furthermore, the impact of the recent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and its related influence on the change of lifestyl...
