[CME/Answers: Elevated Creatine Kinase as a Diagnostic Parameter of Rhabdomyolysis].
Abstract CME/Answers: Elevated Creatine Kinase as a Diagnostic Parameter of Rhabdomyolysis Abstract. Elevated CK values with or without symptoms require clarification in order to rule out possible secondary complications. Adequate hydrogenation, discontinuation of possibly triggering drugs and noxious agents, and close laboratory controls are decisive for the outcome. Acute rhabdomyolysis can have various causes, which can generally be classified as traumatic or atraumatic. In case of recurrent occurrence, genetic or autoimmunological diseases must also be excluded. In addition to a detailed anamnesis, physical ex...

[Recommendations for the Prevention, Diagnostics and Therapy of Addiction Disorders in the Elderly].
llino D Abstract Recommendations for the Prevention, Diagnostics and Therapy of Addiction Disorders in the Elderly Abstract. Although the chronic consumption of alcohol and sedatives, and increasingly opioids, represents a major problem in old age with consequential damage for those affected, little attention has been paid to the substance abuse disorders in old age. The aim of the present recommendations, a collaboration work of the Swiss Society for Geriatric Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (SGAP), Swiss Nurses Association (SBK) and Swiss Society of Addiction Medicine (SSAM), is to summarize the current state of kn...

Abstract Vitamin D Deficiency in Sports Abstract. A deficiency in vitamin D is very common in the general population as well as in athletes. The aim of this overview is to assess the level of knowledge about the importance of vitamin D for athletes. A deficiency in vitamin D is present in up to 90 % of athletes. Risk groups are young athletes, female athletes, athletes with a limitation such as paraplegia, vegetarians, athletes with a resorption disorder such as celiac disease, athletes training and competing indoors (e.g. ice hockey, basketball, boxing, rhythmic gymnastics), and older athletes. Dark skin pigmenta...

[CME Sonography 96: Spleen Changes].
Abstract CME Sonography 96: Spleen Changes Abstract. The spleen is a somewhat neglected organ but there are some changes that must not be neglected. Splenomegaly, caused worldwide most commonly by malaria, can occur in other infections, in portal vein thrombosis or in portal hypertension in the context of liver cirrhosis. An accessory spleen is also often found. Sometimes after splenectomy, small remains are found which may later hypertrophy. Where focal changes are concerned, we differentiate between various forms of spleen cysts, lymphomas, metastases, and benign tumors. PMID: 33530784 [PubMed - indexed for...

Abstract Artificial Intelligence in Radiology - Definition, Potential and Challenges Abstract. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is omnipresent. It has neatly permeated our daily life, even if we are not always fully aware of its ubiquitous presence. The healthcare sector in particular is experiencing a revolution which will change our daily routine considerably in the near future. Due to its advanced digitization and its historical technical affinity radiology is especially prone to these developments. But what exactly is AI and what makes AI so potent that established medical disciplines such as radiology worry about...

[CME/Antworten: Nacht-zu-Nacht-Variabilit ät der obstruktiven Schlafapnoe].
We report on a 76-year-old man with suspected OSA who underwent six sleep studies within 13 months. Sleep studies demonstrated a remarkable variability of respiratory events based on an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) varying between 1.1 and 43.1/h. There were no changes in body weight, alcohol intake, medication or comorbidities during the evaluation period. Due to diagnostic uncertainty and missing subjective benefit, the initially implemented CPAP therapy was stopped after one year of therapy. Considering night-to-night variability of OSA severity, single-night sleep studies might not be accurate enough in order to reliably ...

Anterior shoulder pain is common, and, compared to high-resolution dynamic sonography, the clinical examination is usually not precise enough for the exact classification of the cause of the pain. We use high-resolution ultrasound images to illustrate various possible underlying pathologies in anterior shoulder pain....

An analysis of new approvals of painkillers in Switzerland showed a significant increase from the year 2000 onwards. The majority of new registrations were strong opioid preparations, while the trend in new registrations of non-opioid painkillers was decreasing. Furthermore, the treatment du...

Noninvasive Assessment of Coronary Artery Disease - Anatomical versus Functional Imaging and the Marginal Role of Exercise Electrocardiograms.

Assessment of symptomatic patients with suspected obstructive CAD is a common reason for a clinical visit. Noninvasive anatomical and functional imaging are established tools to rule-in and rule-out CAD, to assess the severity of disease and to determine the potential risk of future cardiovascular events. In this review, we discuss the updated Guidelines from the European Society of Cardiology on Chronic Coronary Syndromes and explore the different imaging modalities used in current clinical...

Abstract CME/Answers: Left Bundle Branch Block and Painful Left Bundle Branch Block Syndrome Abstract. Left bundle branch block (LBBB) is the electrocardiographic correlate of a pathologic transmission of the electrical signals in the myocardium which can lead to a dyssynchronous left ventricular activation and thus to an inefficient contraction of the ventricles. It is usually the expression of an underlying cardiopathy and represents an independent risk factor of cardiovascular mortality, therefore further examination is indicated in each case. Besides the treatment of an underlying disease, a specific therapy h...
