S100A16 cooperates with DEPDC1 to promote the  progression and angiogenesis of nephroblastoma through PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway
Pol J Pathol. 2023;74(3):182-193. doi: 10.5114/pjp.2023.132223.ABSTRACTS100 calcium-binding protein A16 (S100A16) has previously been reported to play a role in tumor cells. Nevertheless, the role that S100A16 played in nephroblastoma cells remains obscure. The expression of S100A16 and DEPDC1 were detected via RT-q PCR and western blotting. Cell transfection was performed to overexpress DEPDC1 or interfere S100A16. CCK8 was applied for the assessment of cell viability. The apoptotic level and the capabilities of WiT49 cells to proliferate, invade and migrated were appraised utilizing Tunel, colony formation Transwell, and...

The Kr üppel-like factor 6 represses proliferation and invasion of cutaneous malignant melanoma
Pol J Pathol. 2023;74(3):194-202. doi: 10.5114/pjp.2023.132224.ABSTRACTCutaneous carcinoma is one of the most common neoplasm tumors in the West. Its incidence rate is one of the fastest growing tumors in China. The Krüppel-like factor 6 (KLF6) is a latent tumor suppressor. Decreased KLF6 is related to the occurrence and progression of many cancers in human. Our previous studies have demonstrated that KLF6 was down-regulation in cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM), and was significant correlated with ulcer, lymph node metastasis and clinical stage, suggesting that KLF6 loss is expected to become a biological indicator of p...

Breast carcinoma grading on core needle biopsy - to grade or not to grade?
Pol J Pathol. 2023;74(3):203-210. doi: 10.5114/pjp.2023.132225.ABSTRACTCore needle biopsy (CNB) is well established as an important diagnostic tool in diagnosing breast cancer and it is now considered the initial method of choice for diagnosing breast disease and the basis for the treatment planning. The concordance rate between CNB and surgical excision specimen in determination of histological grade (HG) varies widely across literature, ranging from 59-91%. The aim of our study was to investigate the level of concordance between CNB and surgical excision specimen for the determination of HG for breast cancer patients. Th...

Cutaneous metastasis of  rectal adenocarcinoma: a case report and literature review
Pol J Pathol. 2023;74(3):211-215. doi: 10.5114/pjp.2023.132228.ABSTRACTAccording to the latest data provided by Globocan 2020, the incidence of colorectal cancer ranks third, after lung cancer and breast cancer, becoming a more and more important global health issue. Of the cases diagnosed with colorectal cancer, more than 25% are diagnosed in the metastatic stage, with the presence of secondary tumors more frequently in the liver, lung and bone. Skin metastases from colorectal cancer are still rare today (< 4%). We want to present a rare, unique case in our department of a 74-year-old patient diagnosed 9 years ago with...

Vaginal metastasis of  renal clear cell carcinoma: a case report emphasizing the role of immunohistochemistry in differential diagnosis in the absence of a clinical history
We present the case of a 71-year-old patient, with vaginal bleeding, dyspnea, headache, loss of appetite and weakness. Clinical examination revealed a pediculated vaginal mass of 25 mm diameter, of dark-red color and soft spongy consistency, with an ulcerated surface and originating from the anterior wall, which was surgically removed. The morphology was dominanted by large, round to polygonal tumor cells, arranged in a predominantly tubulo-cystic architecture, surrounding numerous blood vessels that dominated the appearance, suggesting a perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) or hemangioblastoma but the presence of ...

Prognostic significance of  PD-L1 expression in pancreatic cancer: evidence from an updated meta-analysis
Pol J Pathol. 2023;74(3):151-160. doi: 10.5114/pjp.2023.132220.ABSTRACTRecent studies revealed that programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression was associated with unfavorable prognosis in various solid tumors, but its clinical relevance for pancreatic cancer has not yet been well established. This meta-analysis summarizes the potential prognostic value of PD-L1 in pancreatic cancer. A quantitative meta-analysis was performed by a systematic search of databases including PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane library, Scopus and Ovid for eligible studies on the prognostic significance of PD-L1 in pancreatic cancer ...

Status of  PD-1 and PD-L1 expression in invasive urothelial carcinoma of the bladder with mismatch repair protein deficiency
This study was shown the status of d-MMR and PD-1/PD-L1 in invasive urothelial cancers and their correlation with prognostic markers. PD-1/PD-L1 expression may contribute to the progression and poor prognosis of bladder cancer. However, further studies are required to research the clinical utility.PMID:37955535 | DOI:10.5114/pjp.2023.132221 (Source: Polish Journal of Pathology)

Potential significance of  podoplanin immunohistochemical expression in papillary thyroid carcinoma
Pol J Pathol. 2023;74(3):171-181. doi: 10.5114/pjp.2023.132222.ABSTRACTPodoplanin (PDPN) is a lymphatic endothelial marker expressed by a range of human malignancies in which it has been shown to contribute to tumor progression and metastasis. However, there is a lack of the studies, examining the function of PDPN in thyroid cancer. The current study was performed to explore the possible diagnostic value of PDPN expression in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) and to evaluate the marker's potential for prediction of regional lymph node metastasis. Lymphatic vascular density (LVD) and the stromal/cancer-associated fibroblasts (...
