Assessment of the diagnostic usefulness of liquid-based cytology. The impact of modifications
Pol J Pathol. 2023;74(4):271-281. doi: 10.5114/pjp.2023.134320.ABSTRACTThe technique of liquid-based cytology (LBC) is of increasing diagnostic value in non-gynecological cytology. The purpose of the present study was to validate modifications to stages of the LBC process and to assess the diagnostic usefulness of the LBC technique. Between May 2021 and January 2022, a total of 484 samples were prepared from routine cytology tests carried out in the Department of Tumor Pathology of The Greater Poland Cancer Center. The material was obtained from fine-needle aspiration biopsies and fluid samples. One hundred cases were sele...

Biphenotypic sinonasal sarcoma with PAX3/FOXO1 fusion
Pol J Pathol. 2023;74(4):282-285. doi: 10.5114/pjp.2023.134321.ABSTRACTBiphenotypic sinonasal sarcoma (BSNS), previously known as low-grade sinonasal sarcoma, is a rare tumour of the sinonasal tract, first described in 2012. It involves both myogenic and neural differentiation and is characterized by PAX3 rearrangement. MAML3 is the most frequent fusion partner of PAX3; however, its partner remains unidentified in a subset of cases. These tumours have significant local recurrence rates but lack metastatic potential. Here, we report a case of BSNS with PAX3/FOXO1 fusion and discuss its clinicopathological features and diffe...

Calcifying epithelioma of  Malherbe - a rare localization
Pol J Pathol. 2023;74(4):286-288. doi: 10.5114/pjp.2023.134028.ABSTRACTCalcifying epithelioma of Malherbe, also known as pilomatricoma or pilomatrixoma, mostly arises in the matrix hair follicle. It generally affects the head and neck, upper extremities, and trunk, with the lower extremities being a rare exception. We hereby present a case of a 31-year-old male patient who presented with a small, firm, subcutaneous mass over the left malleolus, which was provisionally diagnosed as lipoma. Surgical excision was performed, and the histopathology report revealed it to be pilomatricoma of the left malleolus.PMID:38477091 | DOI...

Granulomatous gastritis induced by chronic peanut ingestion
We report a 59-year-old woman who had eaten large amounts of peanuts for more than 10 years and presented with epigastric discomfort. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed multiple nodular lesions with ulcer scars at the stomach, which was diagnosed as GG probably caused by chronic peanut ingestion on endoscopic mucosal resection.PMID:38477092 | DOI:10.5114/pjp.2023.134029 (Source: Polish Journal of Pathology)

Primary amelanotic melanoma of  anorectum - a rare case report with diagnostic challenge
We report a case of a 47-year-old woman who experienced painless rectal bleeding. On examination, an irregular lump was seen in the posterior rectal wall, measuring 4 × 3.7 cm. Biopsies were obtained under endoscopic guidance for histomorphology and immunohistochemistry. The biopsy examination showed nests of tumour mass in the lamina and muscularis mucosae. The tumour mass was composed of round to oval cells having enlarged nuclei, conspicuous nucleoli, and a scant amount of cytoplasm. No melanin pigmentation was noted in the tumour cells. HMB-45, S-100, and vimentin were all detected by immunohistochemistry. A definitiv...

Pleural mesothelioma metastasis of the scalp
Pol J Pathol. 2023;74(4):297-301. doi: 10.5114/pjp.2023.134322.ABSTRACTMesothelioma is a locally aggressive malignant tumor that arises on the mesothelial surfaces of the pleura, peritoneum and tunica vaginalis. There are three histologic subtypes of mesothelioma: epithelioid, biphasic, and sarcomatoid. Pleural mesothelioma is usually characterized by diffuse pleural thickening. Disease progression is characterized by local invasion of the chest wall and lung. Lymphatic metastasis is rare and hematogenous metastasis is much rarer. The purpose of these case reports is to emphasize that pleural mesothelioma metastases can oc...

Investigation of ZIP4, ZO-1, and CLAUDIN-1 expression in thyroid tumours by immunohistochemistry and real-time polymerase chain reaction methods
In this study, we aimed to investigate the expression of ZIP4, ZO-1, and Claudin-1 in thyroid tumours and the relationship of this expression with tumour types and prognostic parameters. ZIP4, ZO-1, and Claudin-1 were studied in all cases by immunohistochemical and Real-Time PCR methods. ZIP4 and Claudin-1 tended to be expressed more in cases with tumours, while ZO-1 in cases with and without tumours. Expression of ZIP4 and Claudin-1 by real-time polymerase chain reaction showed a significant difference between histological subtypes, and this difference was not observed with ZO-1. It was observed that the presence of metas...

The role of antral histopathology in diagnosing paediatric celiac disease
Pol J Pathol. 2023;74(4):256-264. doi: 10.5114/pjp.2023.134290.ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic potential of gastric antrum histology in children suspected of having celiac disease (CD). The present retrospective study was performed on 224 patients who were suspected of having CD and had several duodenal and one gastric antrum biopsies. They were divided into 2 groups based on the definite diagnosis of CD. The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 22 software. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were drown and the area under the curves (AUCs) was calculated. Article au...

No differences in miRNA expression in the stroma of ERG+ and ERG- prostate cancers
Pol J Pathol. 2023;74(4):265-270. doi: 10.5114/pjp.2023.134304.ABSTRACTProstate cancer (PC) is one of the most common cancers in males. A significant proportion of PCs bear TMPRSS2-ETS translocation and overexpress ERG transcription factor, allowing classification into ERG+ and ERG- groups, which differ in several features including the tumor microenvironment. The aim of the study was to verify whether they differ in expression of the miRNA in the microenvironment. The material consisted of 150 radical prostatectomies. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) for ERG was done using a routine method. FISH for TMPRSS2-ETS translocation wa...
