Bone Mineral Density among Individuals with Residual Lower Limb Weakness after Polio
ConclusionsIn this small sample, using strong limb T-scores resulted in fewer individuals categorized as having low bone density or osteoporosis than when weak limb T-scores were used. Underestimating BMD loss may lead to under-treatment and increased risk of morbidity, mortality and costs associated with femoral neck fractures in this high fall-risk group. (Source: PMandR)

Impact of Neck Position on the Probability of Common Carotid Artery Puncture During Ultrasound-Guided Stellate Ganglion Block
ConclusionsWe suggest that the full-contralateral neck rotation posture in either the supine or decubitus position is most beneficial for avoiding damage to the carotid artery during the ultrasound-guided stellate ganglion block.Level of evidenceNot applicable. (Source: PMandR)

Quantification of urinary loss in nulliparous athletes during 1-hour of sports training
Conclusionthe athletes did not seem to have good knowledge regarding UI symptoms, and the modified pad test could be a future alternative to quantify the loss of urine, however, is necessary to perform accuracy tests. None of the athletes reported discomfort or decreased performance when performing the pad test. Level II. (Source: PMandR)

Profiling the isokinetic muscle strength of athletes involved in sports characterized by constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity: a cross-sectional study
ConclusionsThis data from highly trained FMHI athletes can be compared to that of other athletes to help determine individual weaknesses, strengths, and imbalances, and may be useful for designing training programs. (Source: PMandR)

Ultrasonographic Evaluation for the Effect of Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy on Gastrocnemius Muscle Spasticity in Patients with Chronic Stroke
ConclusionsSome ultrasonographic measures of spasticity as well as MAS were improved after a single session of ESWT. Future studies with larger numbers of subjects comparing to other spasticity metrics are necessary to further evaluate the treatment effect of ESWT. (Source: PMandR)

Measurement of Cervical Multifidus and Longus Colli Muscle Dimensions in Patients With Cervical Radiculopathy and Healthy Controls Using Ultrasonography: A Reliability Study
ConclusionsThe results indicated that US is a highly reliable method of measuring deep cervical muscle dimensions in patients with cervical radiculopathy and healthy controls when measured by the same investigator. (Source: PMandR)

Virtual Reality for Neurorehabilitation: Insights From 3 European Clinics
Publication date: Available online 16 August 2018Source: PM&RAuthor(s): Owen O’Neil, Manuel Maurie Fernandez, Jürgen Herzog, Marta Beorchia, Valerio Gower, Furio Gramatica, Klaus Starrost, Lorenz KiwullAbstractVirtual reality for the treatment of motor impairment is a burgeoning application of digital technology in neurorehabilitation. Virtual reality systems pose an opportunity for health care providers to augment the dose of task-oriented exercises delivered both in the clinic, and via telerehabilitation models in the home. The technology is almost exclusively applied as an adjunct to traditional approaches and is typ...

Treatment of Postanoxic Action Myoclonus With Intrathecal Baclofen: A Case Report
Publication date: August 2018Source: PM&R, Volume 10, Issue 8Author(s): James A. Whitlock, Ryan W. DumiganAbstractA case of severe action myoclonus after pulmonary arrest is described. Although there was benefit from oral pharmacotherapy, action myoclonus remained disabling. A favorable response to baclofen during an intrathecal trial led to eventual placement of an intrathecal baclofen pump. The present case illustrates the potential utility of intrathecal baclofen for treating this condition.Level of EvidenceV (Source: PMandR)

Neutropenia as a Complication of Tumefactive Demyelinating Disease: A Case Report
We present a case of a 13-year-old female patient who presented with sudden-onset progressive hemiplegia and hemianopsia. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed tumefactive demyelination with partial rim of enhancement. During inpatient rehabilitation, she developed myalgias, rash, and abdominal and mouth pain with evidence for severe neutropenia. The neutropenia was determined to be a secondary complication of the tumefactive disease process. This scenario may be concerning in an inpatient rehabilitation setting, as patients share common areas, increasing the risk of acquired infection while neutropenic.Level of E...
