Postneedling Soreness and Tenderness After Different Dosages of Dry Needling of an Active Myofascial Trigger Point in Patients With Neck Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial
ConclusionsPostneedling soreness is present in most of subjects after DDN of active MTrPs. The groups in which DDN was performed eliciting LTRs exhibited greater post-needling soreness. The number of needle insertions was associated with postneedling soreness but psychological factors did not seem to play a relevant role on its perception.Clinical trial registration numberNCT02190890Level of Evidence▪▪▪ (Source: PMandR)

Evaluation of the Combined Application of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation and Volitional Contractions on Thigh Muscle Strength, Knee Pain, and Physical Performance in Women at Risk for Knee Osteoarthritis: A Randomized Controlled Trial
ConclusionsThese results suggest the HTS is effective for alleviating pain and improving physical performance in women with risk factors for knee OA. However, the HTS does not appear to be superior to low-load resistance training for improving muscle strength, pain relief, or physical function. This clinical trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov (study ID NCT02802878). Early Clinical Outcomes of Intra-Articular Injections of Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate for the Treatment of Early Osteoarthritis of the Hip, and Knee: A Cohort Study
ConclusionsIntra-articular injections of BMC for the treatment of early knee or hip OA were safe and demonstrated satisfactory results in 63.2% of patients. Future studies are necessary to determine the efficacy of this technique and its safety profile.Level of EvidenceII (Source: PMandR)

Risk Factors for Thirty-Day Readmissions After Lower Extremity Amputation in Patients With Vascular Disease
ConclusionsRisk factors for readmission after any amputation included cardiac comorbidities, associated postoperative medications, and discharge to a skilled nursing facility. The finding that acute arterial embolism or thrombosis and a BKA during the index admission was highly associated with readmission, combined with the high rates of 30-day conversion to an AKA when readmitted, suggests these patients more often develop stump complications or may be undertreated during the initial hospitalization.Level of EvidenceIII (Source: PMandR)

Insertion and Presence of Fine-Wire Intramuscular Electrodes to the Lumbar Paraspinal Muscles Do Not Affect Muscle Performance and Activation During High-Exertion Spinal Extension Activities
ConclusionOur findings suggested the sonographically guided insertion and presence of fine-wire intramuscular EMG electrodes in the lumbar multifidus muscles had no significant impact on spinal extension muscle function. This study provides evidence that implementing intramuscular EMG does not affect muscle performance during high-exertion contractions in individuals with no current back pain.Level of EvidenceII (Source: PMandR)

Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty in Weight-Bearing Shoulders of Wheelchair-Dependent Patients: Outcomes and Complications at 2 to 5 years
ConclusionsRSA is a safe and effective procedure in wheelchair-dependent patients who use their shoulders for weight-bearing purposes. Although functional scores are not optimal and medical complications are not uncommon, 79% of patients had an excellent or satisfactory result.Level of EvidenceIII (Source: PMandR)

Lumbar Medial Branch Block Volume-Dependent Dispersion Patterns as a Predictor for Ablation Success: A Cadaveric Study
ConclusionWe suggest that a 0.5-mL injectate volume in clinical practice may produce an adjacent-level nerve block in addition to the intended injection level, thus decreasing the specificity of a targeted lumbar medial branch block. A 0.25-mL quantity of injectate reliably contacted the lumbar medial branches without extensive extravasation. Presumably, this means that 0.25 mL total volume for a lumbar medial branch block may provide greater specificity for RFA planning.Level of EvidenceNA (Source: PMandR)

Hydrodilatation With Corticosteroid for the Treatment of Adhesive Capsulitis: A Systematic Review
ConclusionCombining hydrodilatation with corticosteroid injection potentially expedites recovery of pain-free ROM. The greatest benefit is experienced within the first 3 months of intervention. Differences in hydrodilatation techniques, inclusion of capsular preservation, anatomical approach, and length of symptoms may explain the variability in efficacy demonstrated. Further trials using larger sample sizes, better anatomical approaches, image guidance, and hydrodilatation techniques are required to determine the true nature of benefits of hydrodilatation with corticosteroid injection.Level of EvidenceII (Source: PMandR)

The Role of Rehabilitation in Patients With Progressive Supranuclear Palsy: A Narrative Review
Publication date: June 2018Source: PM&R, Volume 10, Issue 6Author(s): Domenico Intiso, Michelangelo Bartolo, Andrea Santamato, Filomena Di RienzoAbstractProgressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder caused by the deposition of abnormal proteins in neurons of the basal ganglia that limit motor ability, resulting in disability and reduced quality of life. So far, no pharmacologic therapy has been developed, and the treatment remains symptomatic. The aim of the present study is to perform a systematic investigation of the literature, and to determine the types and effects of rehabilitative i...

Ultrasound Finding of Ischiofemoral Impingement Syndrome and Novel Treatment With Botulinum Toxin Chemodenervation: A Case Report
Publication date: June 2018Source: PM&R, Volume 10, Issue 6Author(s): Yin-Ting Chen, Keyonna M. JenkinsAbstractIschiofemoral impingement syndrome (IFIS) is a rare and poorly understood condition that leads to deep gluteal pain, groin, and/or medial thigh pain. It has unique diagnostic challenges, with limited nonoperative treatment options. It is caused by the impingement of the quadratus femoris by the lesser trochanter and the ischium. Currently, there are no validated physical examination maneuvers for IFIS, and the value of ischiofemoral interval for establishing IFIS is also uncertain. Ultrasound-guided corticosteroid...

Custom Fabrication of a 3-Dimensionally Printed Helmet for Improved Socialization and Subjective Self-Assessment in a Case of Acquired Cranial Defect: A Case Presentation
Publication date: June 2018Source: PM&R, Volume 10, Issue 6Author(s): Cesar Colasante, Zachary Sanford, Nileyma Castro, Matthew N. BartelsAbstractTraumatic injury and subsequent residual cosmetic deformity are subject of intense scrutiny for their effects on objective health measures assessing patient morbidity and mortality. Although these remain principal concerns of all members of the treatment team, of less immediate yet lasting importance to the patient are the social costs of such disfigurement. Subjective feelings of unease and embarrassment can hinder social reintegration and encourage deteriorating psychosocial he...
