A Simple, Atraumatic Technique for Tendon Retrieval and Holding During Tendon Repair
In this report, we describe an atraumatic technique that can be used intraoperatively to hold and retrieve tendons during tendon repair procedures. To use this technique, the surgeon transfixes a 24-gauge needle 1.5–3.5 cm from the cut ends of the tendon and then uses a Kocher artery curved forceps to loop the end of the needle upon itself up to 180°. The surgeon can then use the needle to retrieve or hold the tendon during the repair. This simple, low-cost technique can be very effective and efficient when used in primary care centers, emergency departments, or other treatment areas. (Source: Plastic Surgical Nursing)

Is the Systematic Sponge Count an Impediment to Patient Care During Plastic Surgical Procedures?
Nurses and surgeons collaborate to conduct safe surgery. We follow time-consuming and labor-intensive protocols, such as the systematic counting and verifying of surgical sponges. However, the counting process may be distracting from other patient-centered tasks. To understand the perception of plastic surgery professionals about the intraoperative sponge count, we designed an online questionnaire. One hundred plastic surgeons and residents from 32 different countries completed the survey. The results showed that most often (70%) the scrub person determines when sponges will be counted, and 34.3% of the time, a sponge coun...

Cancer-Related Lymphedema Management: Development of Patient Education Resources
Lymphedema education following cancer surgery helps patients feel more empowered to perform their own self-care. This may lead to fewer lymphedema symptoms postoperatively resulting in an overall improvement in the patient's quality of life. We identified a need for written comprehensive postoperative lymphedema patient education at our institution. We created the educational resources with the help of a multidisciplinary team and these resources are currently being provided to the patients during their visit to our lymphedema clinic. Plastic and breast oncology nurses, a plastic surgeon specializing in lymphedema manageme...

Ultrasound for the Aesthetic Injector
The use of ultrasound has become ubiquitous in the health care industry. Several ultrasound applications may be beneficial for aesthetic injectors. Aesthetic injectors can use ultrasound to visualize needles or cannulas and confirm the exact location of the tip. Using ultrasound guidance can improve nodule management. Perhaps, the most beneficial aspect of ultrasound guidance is its ability to identify and assist with vascular occlusions. The available ultrasound systems appropriate for aesthetic injectors are handheld or cart systems. When purchasing ultrasound systems, practitioners must weigh the advantages and disadvan...

Vascular Safe Zones for Facial Soft Tissue Filler Injections
The number of soft tissue filler injections performed by aesthetic injectors has continued to increase over the last few years. To provide a high standard of safety and achieve individualized, reproducible, and long-lasting outcomes, aesthetic injectors must have a solid foundation in anatomy, facial biomechanics, rheology, and injection biomechanics. Adverse events associated with soft tissue filler injections can be severe, especially if the aesthetic injector unintentionally injects the soft tissue filler into the patient's arterial vascular circulation and the administered product reaches the arterial bloodstream. Alth...

Caring for Patients With Electrical Burns Using the Holistic Neuman Systems Model: A Case Study
This study aimed to investigate the applicability of the NSM when caring for a patient with electrical burns. In this case study, we planned and applied nursing care for a 20-year-old man with electrical burns based on the NSM. The study was conducted between November 25, 2018, and January 10, 2019. We used the six-item Neuman Diagnostic Tool (NDT) developed by Neuman in our interviews with the patient. We found that the electrical burns had caused multiple physiological, psychological, and sociocultural problems for our patient, most of which were physical problems, including the burn injury and subsequent limb amputation...
