Nonsurgical Correction of Stahl’s Ear in Neonates: A Case Study
We present a case that shows a newborn with unilateral Stahl’s ear deformity, in which we used a molding device (EarBuddies) to permanently correct the ear’s shape. After 3 weeks of treatment, the affected auricle regained its normal appearance. There were no complications. Long-term follow-up showed no recurrence. Splinting of this ear deformity seems to be a nonpainful, stress-free and, most importantly, effective nonoperative treatment. Postpartum clinical examination of the ears is crucial, as the sooner the nonsurgical correction of the deformity begins, the better the results are. A clinical screening for ear def...

Correction of Darwin’s Tubercle with Plasma Exeresis
We present a noninvasive aesthetic medicine procedure based on plasma exeresis, which combines the benefits of a noninvasive procedure with the advantage of not requiring lasers for the correction of this cartilage defect. We present the case of a 28-year-old woman with right-sided hypertrophic DT, who requested a correction of the outer ear deformity. Two sessions were required, pain intensity during treatment was low, no complications were reported, and the patient was satisfied with the result at 6 months from the last session. Although plasma exeresis has been described in the past for several other non-invasive proced...

Sickle Cell Disease Association with Premature Suture Fusion in Young Children
Conclusions: Approximately 20% of pediatric patients with SCD developed CS. This association was higher in those patients who had a family history of SCD, used folic acid, and had SCD-associated vasculopathy. While the clinical impact of these findings needs more extensive study, centers that manage patients with SCD should be aware of the relatively high concordance of these diagnoses, vigilantly monitor head shape and growth parameters, and understand the potential risks associated with unidentified or untreated CS. Tranexamic Acid Dosing in Craniosynostosis Surgery: A Systematic Review with Meta-analysis
Conclusions: Overall, TXA reduced blood loss and transfusion requirement in patients undergoing surgery for craniosynostosis. There was no difference in outcomes between high dose and low dose regimens amongst those receiving TXA. Low dose TXA appears adequate to achieve clinical efficacy with a low adverse event rate. Intracranial Volume in Relation to Parent Satisfaction and Expert Opinion: A Novel Look at Surgical Outcomes
Conclusions: The study is valuable, as it investigates the relationship between the expansion rate, parents’ satisfaction, and expert opinion as predicted values of craniosynostosis surgery. The overall satisfaction correlated significantly well with the expansion rate. However, such numerical assessment is not a real guide for assessing clinical outcomes‚ as no association was found between expansion rate, satisfaction rate, and expert opinion. Patient-reported Outcomes of Scar Impact: Comparing of Abdominoplasty, Breast Surgery, and Facial Surgery Patients
The objective of this study is to evaluate the scarring impact after facial surgery, breast surgery, and full abdominoplasty for symptoms, appearance, psychosocial health, career, and sexual well-being using validated patient-reported outcome measures. Method: A total of 901 patients from five providers completed the SCAR-Q (covering symptoms, appearance, and psychosocial) and Career/Sexual Well-being assessments via phone or email where a higher score indicated a more positive scar perception. Results: Of the 901 patients, 38.1% had abdominoplasty surgery, 38.1% breast reduction, 15.3% facial surgery, 4.7% b...

The Majority of Venous Thromboembolism Events Should Occur in Lower Risk Aesthetic Surgery Patients: A Simulation Study
Conclusions: The majority of breast augmentation patients in this study (96%) have 2005 Caprini scores ≤6. Twenty-eight percent of patients have potentially modifiable risk factors. The majority of patients with VTE after aesthetic surgery are expected to have lower Caprini risk scores. (Source: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery – Global Open)

Objective Odor Assessment in Patients with Osmidrosis
This study presents an objective method for assessing odor severity in patients with osmidrosis and investigates the volatile odorants and skin flora. Methods: The odor intensity was measured pre- and postoperatively using an industrial odor sensor in 79 patients with osmidrosis. Cultures of the axillary skin were obtained during skin flap surgery. Volatile odorants of the patients were assessed using an odor-sensor gas chromatograph mass spectrometer, and samples collected from clothing worn by the patients before and after surgery. The skin pH of the axilla was measured before and after surgery. The locations of o...

Intraoperative Interpectoral and Subserratus Nerve Blocks in Breast Augmentation Surgery
Background: An essential component in ambulatory breast augmentation surgery is good analgesia. The demographic undergoing this operation is usually fit, low risk with few comorbidities. These patients do not require long-term hospitalization and do not want to spend excessive time in the hospital for financial reasons. Opiate analgesia can have significant side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and sedation. Reducing volumes of postoperative opiates allows faster ambulation and discharge from day surgery. We have developed two targeted nerve blocks that the operating surgeon can apply in minutes under direct vision, n...

Dermal Micro-coring for the Treatment of Moderate to Severe Facial Wrinkles
Conclusions: The results of this study demonstrate the safety and efficacy of MCT with the dermal micro-coring device for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles. MCT led to significant improvement of facial wrinkles with high patient satisfaction and fast recovery time and should be considered in patients who are seeking minimally invasive treatment for wrinkles of the face. An Analytical Study of Primus Stove Burns: A Catastrophic and Costly but Preventable Tragedy
Conclusions: Primus stove injuries are catastrophic and costly, but preventable. This study provides a detailed analytic and epidemiological approach to these injuries, hoping to shed light on the severity of such cases‚ and stresses the importance of prevention, which is always better than cure. Donor-site Chyle Leakage after Breast Reconstruction Using a Deep Inferior Epigastric Artery Perforator Flap
Summary: Postoperative chyle leakage is an uncommon type of lymphorrhea characterized by a milky white lymphatic fluid. Here, we report a case of postoperative donor-site chyle leakage after breast reconstruction using a deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEP) flap. A 50-year-old woman underwent unilateral secondary breast reconstruction using a DIEP flap. On postoperative day (POD) 3, 50 mL of clear white liquid was observed in the abdominal suction drain over 12 hours. On POD 6, the amount of white-colored fluid in the left side suction drain increased to 190 mL/d with high triglyceride 674 mg/dL. The...

Topical Dimethyl Sulfoxide for Congested Nipple–areolar Complexes in Breast Surgery: A Pilot Study
Conclusions: This pilot study shows that DMSO may be an effective topical treatment for NAC congestion following breast surgery. Given its low cost, ease of application, and lack of side effects, future studies should prospectively compare DMSO against other topical treatments, like nitroglycerin ointment.
