Effectiveness of Preoperative Symptom Screening in Identifying Pediatric SARS-CoV-2 Infections: A Retrospective Cohort Analysis
Conclusions: Preoperative symptom screenings insufficiently identified COVID-19 (+) patients. During outbreaks, testing protocols should be implemented to identify COVID-19 (+) patients. Future research should examine if observations are similar for other variants, and how health disparities associate with COVID-19. (Source: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery – Global Open)

Gender-affirming Phalloplasty: A Postoperative Protocol for Success
Conclusions: For optimal and safe surgical outcomes, the surgical and extended care teams need to understand flap monitoring as well as specific postoperative protocols. A systematic approach focusing on flap monitoring, mobilization and activity, medications, and postoperative dressing care decreases errors, accelerates recovery, shortens length of stay, and instills confidence in the patient. Early MDO with a Virtually Planned Distractor in a Neonate with Pierre Robin Sequence
We report a case of a female infant with PRS in combination with deletion of chromosome 4q and cardiac insufficiency due to an atrioventricular septum defect. The child was transferred to our center from a peripheral hospital with respiratory insufficiency. Initially, respiration was ensured using a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device because a Tuebingen plate was not tolerated. After a pediatric cardiac surgery intervention, CPAP ventilation proved to be insufficient, and the young patient had to be resuscitated and endotracheal intubation was required for recurrent severe respiratory failure. To avoid trach...

Mandibular Myofibroma and Severe Trismus: A Complex Case and Review of Complications
Summary: A female child was investigated for insidious onset of temporomandibular joint dysfunction and trismus in the setting of a mandibular myofibroma. Myofibromas, benign mesenchymal neoplasms composed of spindle cells, are rarely found in the oral cavity, most commonly in the mandible. These lesions are historically described as indolent with a high cure rate and minimal recurrence rates following surgical resection. The patient initially presented with concerns regarding snoring, retrognathia, and jaw ankylosis, as well as a history of trouble latching as an infant but without obvious physical deformities. Imagin...

Recurrent Gingival Lesions in a Pediatric Patient
We present the case of a 13-year-old girl who developed numerous gingival masses that recurred after two prior resections. Following the initial resection as a child, she reported that there was a period of resolution for several years before recurrence as a teenager. After the second resection, the masses recurred after 4 months. The lesions obscured the majority of her dentition and interfered with speech, eating, and oral hygiene. The patient underwent staged resection of the masses, and the wounds were allowed to heal by secondary intention. The histopathologic findings of the specimens were consistent with a diagnosis...

Patient-specific Implants for Treating Atrophic Mandibles
The objective of this report is to offer a single-stage augmentation method, which uses patient-specific crib-shaped implants (PSI) combined with autogenous free bone grafts. PSI were planned using three-dimensional (3D) segmentation and 3D virtual-planning software. Implants were designed according to the patient’s mandible with a mesh-like structure and included large holes for allowing blood supply recovery. During surgery, the PSI fitted perfectly. In cases exhibiting malposition of the mandibular fragments, repositioning was performed using 3D virtual planning. When repositioning mandibular segments, the PSI served ...

Cost and Satisfaction Implications of Using Telehealth for Plagiocephaly
Conclusions: Costs of providing in-person and telehealth plagiocephaly consultations were comparable, whereas patients incur greater costs when coming in person. Practices that treat patients with plagiocephaly may wish to consider expanding their virtual consult offerings to families desiring this option. Long-term outcome studies are necessary to evaluate the efficacy of both visit types. (Source: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery – Global Open)

Prevalence of Mendosal Suture Patency in Infants Up to the Age of 18 Months
Conclusions: Prevalence of a patent mendosal suture was 2.6% overall. Mendosal suture fusion initiates in-utero and completes ex-utero within the first 18 months of life. Delayed closure results in greater occipital projection. (Source: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery – Global Open)

Loss of Lower Eyelid Bulge after the Reconstruction of Zygomatic Complex Fractures
Conclusions: In reconstruction after zygomatic complex fractures, lower eyelid bulges were lost in both the swinging eyelid and subciliary approaches in patients over 50 years old. The cause was thought to be an ORL release or an unintended septal reset-like effect. (Source: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery – Global Open)

National Trends in Venous Thromboembolism in the Adult Craniofacial Trauma Population
Conclusions: This study demonstrates that craniofacial trauma patients are at risk for VTE and should be risk-stratified for chemoprophylaxis therapy. Further studies in thromboembolism prophylaxis for facial fractures are warranted as the data are limited. (Source: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery – Global Open)

A Low-cost, Sterile System for Fat Collection Using a Syringe Tube as a Reservoir
In this report, we describe our solution in dealing with the unavailability of a sterile vacuum pump canister during a large volume fat grafting procedure. We constructed a sterile reservoir using two syringes, through which negative pressure was delivered without breaking sterility. The items used were a 60-cm3 syringe barrel, a 10-cm3 syringe barrel, a 60-cm3 syringe plunger seal, a tube connected to the nonsterile vacuum pump, and the liposuction cannula. This technique allowed us to extract the fat in a sterile environment under the assistance of a suction device. Our novel technique was used for harvesting fat in a st...

Hexagonal Skin Excision in Lipoabdominoplasty Aiming for a Smaller Scar and Efficient Waist
Summary: Standard abdominoplasty scars may extend beyond the boundaries of the abdomen. Contemporary styles of body exposure and bathing suits demand that those incisions be hidden inside the β€œbikini line.” Although a smaller incision used for a mini abdominoplasty might be confined to the abdomen, larger incisions to remove massive amounts of fat and skin excess from the abdomen routinely require extensions toward the groin or iliac areas. Preoperative marking of the incision in an abdominoplasty procedure plays a key role in the shape, length, and position of the resulting scar. Undermining, traction, and resecti...
