Trunk Muscle Function and Core Stability in Women Who Had Muscle-Sparing Pedicled Transverse Rectus Abdominis Myocutaneous Flap Breast Reconstruction
CONCLUSIONS: Women exhibit trunk flexor and extensor weakness along with poor endurance and impaired core stability even after an average of 10 months from receiving the TRAMmsp flap procedure. Immobilization after surgery, with possible systemic inflammatory effects from surgery and chemotherapy, might have further contributed to the generalized weakness subsequent to the partial harvesting of the rectus abdominis.IMPACT: Women after breast reconstruction with the TRAMmsp flap procedure show long-lasting deficits of strength and endurance in abdominal muscles, back extensors, and core stability. Proactive measures includi...

Prevalence of disabling musculoskeletal pain in children and adolescents in Brazil: A cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: The one-month prevalence of activity limiting musculoskeletal pain in children and adolescents was 27.1% with the back being the most often affected body region. Parents tended to underestimate the presence of pain in their children.PMID:38394719 | DOI:10.1016/j.bjpt.2024.100593 (Source: Physical Therapy)

Social responsiveness in children with developmental coordination disorder
CONCLUSION: Social responsiveness difficulties are more common in children with DCD and are more severe in the ASD groups. Motor performance and social responsiveness are weak to moderately associated.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT05092893 (https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT05092893).PMID:38394720 | DOI:10.1016/j.bjpt.2024.100591 (Source: Physical Therapy)

The minimal important difference for the Postural Assessment Scale for Stroke Patients in the subacute stage
CONCLUSION: The MID of the PASS was 3.0 points, indicating that if a patient achieves an improvement of 3.0 or more points on the PASS, they have a clinically important improvement in posture control. Our results can help in interpreting change scores and aid in understanding the clinical values of treatment outcomes.PMID:38394721 | DOI:10.1016/j.bjpt.2024.100595 (Source: Physical Therapy)

Epidemiology of injuries in elite female rink hockey players: A two season observational study
CONCLUSIONS: The injury incidence in elite female rink hockey is moderate and occurs mainly during match sessions. Preventative measurements should be implemented in rink hockey with a special concern for injuries affecting the thigh, and hip/groin.PMID:38394829 | DOI:10.1016/j.ptsp.2024.02.002 (Source: Physical Therapy)

Early surgery versus exercise therapy and patient education for traumatic and non-traumatic meniscal tears in young adults - an exploratory analysis from the DREAM-trial
CONCLUSION: In patients with traumatic and non-traumatic meniscus tears, early meniscal surgery did not appear superior to exercise and education in improving pain, function, and quality of life after 12-months. Further research is needed to confirm the clinical applicability of these findings.PMID:38385220 | DOI:10.2519/jospt.2024.12245 (Source: Physical Therapy)

Functional Recovery of Adults Following Acute COVID-19: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSION: Patients have reduced physical function more than 3 months after COVID-19 infection. Better physical function in multiple physical domains is found after a longer recovery time.IMPACT: Physical function as measured by the 6-minute walk test, hand grip strength, and cardiopulmonary exercise testing is reduced at 3 months after COVID-19 infection and can remain over 11 months of follow-up. This protracted recovery following acute COVID-19 infection supports the need to assess physical function at any clinical follow-up, and further research into rehabilitation programs and intervention for patients who have not r...

Experienced Clinical Decision Making in Physical Therapist Management of Concussion: A Qualitative Study
CONCLUSIONS: Experienced therapists demonstrate a consistent approach that parallels the current clinical practice guideline while building off clinical experience to tailor individualized care focusing on patient centeredness. These factors may assist more novice clinicians to develop and improve their management strategies for optimal outcomes.IMPACT: Identified themes may broaden frameworks and guidelines for the management of individuals post-concussion specific to the field of physical therapy.PMID:38386996 | DOI:10.1093/ptj/pzae027 (Source: Physical Therapy)

Comparison of physical therapy utilization, timing of return-to-sport test completion, and hop test performance by age and between sexes in youth athletes after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction
CONCLUSION: In a youth cohort, age and sex may have no clinically important effect on PT visit utilization, timing of RTS test or hop test performance.PMID:38387378 | DOI:10.1016/j.ptsp.2024.02.004 (Source: Physical Therapy)
