Dyslipidemia and heart failure: current evidence and perspectives of use of statins
Eur Rev Med Pharmacol Sci. 2024 Apr;28(7):2860-2877. doi: 10.26355/eurrev_202404_35929.ABSTRACTHeart failure (HF) is a condition with growing morbidity and mortality. Dyslipidemia in HF is not concentrated around hypercholesterolemia as in coronary artery disease. As a corollary, the robust benefits seen with statins across the spectrum of CAD have not been replicated in HF. Multiple potential pleiotropic effects of statins include anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, endothelial stabilization, antiapoptotic, anti-thrombotic, and modulation of the autonomic system apart from lipid lowering. These benevolent actions need to be c...

High MCM6 expression promotes proliferation and correlates with poor prognosis in triple-negative breast cancer
CONCLUSIONS: MCM6 overexpression in TNBC links to a worse prognosis and reduced cell proliferation upon MCM6 knockdown. We developed a risk score model based on MCM6-related genes predicting TNBC patient prognosis, potentially assisting future treatment strategies.PMID:38639528 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202404_35921 (Source: Pharmacological Reviews)

Clinical determinants of clinical response to Sonidegib in advanced basal cell carcinoma: a monocenter experience
CONCLUSIONS: The associations between the clinical outcome of interest (objective response rate) and the clinicopathological and treatment characteristics were evaluated. No statistically significant association was observed. Our analysis confirms the observation that no statistically significant correlation exists between clinical response and Sonidegib alternate dose regimen.PMID:38639529 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202404_35923 (Source: Pharmacological Reviews)

Proposal of model for personalized early adapted cancer screening in people living with HIV: experience of "Gaetano Martino" Hospital University of Messina
Eur Rev Med Pharmacol Sci. 2024 Apr;28(7):2929-2942. doi: 10.26355/eurrev_202404_35924.ABSTRACTHuman immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has historically been related to the development of specific cancers, some of which are so closely linked to the infection, such as Kaposi's Sarcoma (KS), that they have earned the name Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)-defining cancers (ADCs). While the development of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has decreased the incidence of AIDS-defining cancers, the resulting aging of people living with HIV (PLWH) highlighted an increased occurrence of other forms of cancer. At the "Gaeta...

The relationship between quality of sleep and physical activity with level of symptom severity post-COVID-19 among HIV/AIDS patients
CONCLUSIONS: Physical activity was associated with the severity of the COVID-19 symptoms (p = 0.007). However, sleep quality was not associated with the severity of COVID-19 (p = 0.409). Physical activity may be one of the factors that prevent further severe COVID-19 symptoms. Therefore, physical activity should be considered as an effective factor to reduce the impact of COVID-19 and should be included in health care and prevention strategies.PMID:38639531 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202404_35926 (Source: Pharmacological Reviews)

Investigation on the relationship between serum periostin, MMP-7, TGF- β, and IL-18 levels and the clinical course and prognosis of COVID-19
CONCLUSIONS: It is still not possible to predict which patients with early COVID-19 pneumonia will go on to develop MAS despite receiving standard treatment. The results of our study suggest that elevation of periostin and MMP-7 levels in the early period may predict the development of macrophage activation syndrome.PMID:38639532 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202404_35927 (Source: Pharmacological Reviews)

The global impact of SARS-CoV-2 variant BA.2.86: a comprehensive analysis with the latest developments and transmission trends - an epidemiological study
CONCLUSIONS: The SARS-CoV-2, novel variant BA.2.86, spread over six continents and 89 countries and affected 19,532 people worldwide. The disease is more prevalent in the United Kingdom, United States of America, and European countries. The detection of the disease in multiple continents and countries suggests some degree of transmissibility. Global health authorities need to rethink their policies and implement strict strategies to eradicate emerging variants and minimize the global disease burden.PMID:38639533 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202404_35928 (Source: Pharmacological Reviews)

The safety signal detection and analysis of monoclonal antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 based on real-world evidence - the suitable selectivity for different populations
CONCLUSIONS: In summary, SOT may be unsuitable for allergic patients and may lead to abnormal test results. BEB showed the highest correlations with gastrointestinal and neuropsychiatric events. In addition, its infusion reactions should also be noted. TIX/CIL can lead to a variety of cardiovascular events.PMID:38639534 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202404_35925 (Source: Pharmacological Reviews)

Improvement of assessment in surrogate endpoint and safety outcome of single-arm trials for anticancer drugs
Expert Rev Clin Pharmacol. 2024 Apr 21:1-11. doi: 10.1080/17512433.2024.2344669. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Single-arm trials (SATs) and surrogate endpoints were adopted as pivotal evidence for accelerated approval of anticancer drugs for more than 30 years. However, concerns regarding clinical evidence quality in trials, particularly in the SATs of anticancer drugs have increasingly been raised. SAT may not always provide strong evidence due to the lack of control and endpoint of overall survival that is typically present in randomized controlled trials.AREAS COVERED: Clinical trial endpoint adjudication ...

The Association between Use of Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System Inhibitors and the Risk and Mortality of Pancreatic Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSION: In summary, while renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors did not appear to impact PC risk, their use was associated with lower PC mortality based on this meta-analysis of the current evidence. More rigorous and well-designed studies are required to validate and support these findings.PMID:38629353 | DOI:10.2174/0127724328291047240409062436 (Source: Pharmacological Reviews)

Opioid use disorder in pediatric populations: considerations for perioperative pain management and precision opioid analgesia
Expert Rev Clin Pharmacol. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.1080/17512433.2024.2343915. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Opioids are commonly used for perioperative analgesia, yet children still suffer high rates of severe post-surgical pain and opioid-related adverse effects. Persistent and severe acute surgical pain greatly increases the child's chances of chronic surgical pain, long-term opioid use, and opioid use disorder.AREAS COVERED: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols, are often inadequate in treating a child's severe surgical pain. Research suggests that 'older' and longer-acting opioids such as methad...
