Glucose-induced pseudohypoxia and advanced glycosylation end products explain peritoneal damage in long-term peritoneal dialysis
Perit Dial Int. 2023 Sep 18:8968608231196033. doi: 10.1177/08968608231196033. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLong-term peritoneal dialysis is associated with the development of peritoneal membrane alterations, both in morphology and function. Impaired ultrafiltration (UF) is the most important functional change, and peritoneal fibrosis is the major morphological alteration. Both are caused by the continuous exposure to dialysis solutions that are different from plasma water with regard to the buffer substance and the extremely high-glucose concentrations. Glucose has been incriminated as the major cause of long-term periton...

Early outcomes of peritoneal dialysis in a middle-income country: A retrospective cohort study of a large dialysis network in Colombia
CONCLUSIONS: In this large population of incident PD patients, there is a high primary catheter placement success rate. Urgent start, age ≥65 years, obesity, centre size ≥150 PD patients and diabetes were risk factors associated with early complications. The follow-up of the cohort from day 1 of PD treatment showed that the risk for transfer to HD was higher during the first month.PMID:37723995 | DOI:10.1177/08968608231198977 (Source: Peritoneal Dialysis International)

Standards of diabetes care and burden of hypoglycaemia in people with diabetes on peritoneal dialysis: Results from a real-world clinical audit
Perit Dial Int. 2023 Sep 13:8968608231195492. doi: 10.1177/08968608231195492. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThere is limited data on the standards of diabetes care in people on peritoneal dialysis (PD). Our aim was to assess the standards of diabetes care and the burden of hypoglycaemia in people with diabetes on PD. We performed a retrospective study at three university hospitals from December 2021 to January 2022. Clinical data were extracted from electronic health records. Diabetes care of people on PD was compared against recommended standards for people with diabetes on haemodialysis (as there are no agreed standards ...
