Multiple thromboses, including intracardiac thrombi, accompanied by HIT during ECMO successfully treated with NOACs: A case report
CONCLUSION: Although thrombocytopenia and thrombosis can occur for various reasons during ECMO maintenance, it is important to consider HIT as a potential cause. NOACs can be considered as a therapeutic option.PMID:38239000 | DOI:10.1177/02676591241227903 (Source: Perfusion)

The use of protective mechanical ventilation during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for the treatment of acute respiratory failure
Perfusion. 2024 Jan 19:2676591241227167. doi: 10.1177/02676591241227167. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAcute respiratory failure (ARF) strikes an estimated two million people in the United States each year, with care exceeding US$50 billion. The hallmark of ARF is a heterogeneous injury, with normal tissue intermingled with a large volume of low compliance and collapsed tissue. Mechanical ventilation is necessary to oxygenate and ventilate patients with ARF, but if set inappropriately, it can cause an unintended ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI). The mechanism of VILI is believed to be overdistension of the remaining n...

The correlation of non-invasive hemoglobin testing and lab hemoglobin in surgical patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: In general, there was no clinically significant difference in mean hemoglobin among adult and pediatric populations. The percentage of female participants had no effect on the mean difference in hemoglobin.PMID:38231793 | DOI:10.1177/02676591241226465 (Source: Perfusion)

Severe COVID-19 post pregnancy complicated by acute thromboemboli resulting in ST-elevation myocardial infarction - A case report
Conclusions: The center for disease control (CDC) surveillance has reported that pregnant patients with COVID-19 are more likely to require invasive ventilation and ECMO, and die given the immunological changes during pregnancy. Hypercoagulable state caused by combination of pregnancy and COVID-19 resulting in coronary thrombosis is rarely described in literature, our case demonstrated the paucity of this phenomenon.PMID:38233341 | DOI:10.1177/02676591241228173 (Source: Perfusion)

The biological role and future therapeutic uses of nitric oxide in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, a narrative review
Perfusion. 2024 Jan 16:2676591241228169. doi: 10.1177/02676591241228169. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Nitric oxide (NO) is a gas naturally produced by the human body that plays an important physiological role. Specifically, it binds guanylyl cyclase to induce smooth muscle relaxation. NO's other protective functions have been well documented, particularly its protective endothelial functions, effects on decreasing pulmonary vascular resistance, antiplatelet, and anticoagulation properties. The use of nitric oxide donors as vasodilators has been known since 1876. Inhaled nitric oxide has been used as a pulmonar...

Impact of pulmonary hypertension on short-term outcomes in patients undergoing surgical aortic valve replacement for severe aortic valve stenosis
CONCLUSION: In our study, patients with severe PH and severe symptomatic AS who underwent surgical aortic valve replacement showed adverse short-term outcomes compared to patients without PH.PMID:38213127 | DOI:10.1177/02676591241227883 (Source: Perfusion)

"Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation outcomes in multisystem inflammatory syndrome of childhood - An extracorporeal life support organization registry study"
Perfusion. 2024 Jan 5:2676591231226290. doi: 10.1177/02676591231226290. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMultisystem inflammatory disease in childhood (MIS-C) is a novel pediatric syndrome after a COVID-19 infection that causes systemic injury, with potential life-threatening hemodynamic compromise requiring Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) support. We performed an observational retrospective cohort study in children aged 0-18 years with MIS-C and non-MIS-C myocarditis on ECMO between January 2020 and December 2021, using the ELSO Registry database. We aimed to compare the outcomes of both populations and to identif...

Relationship between difference of preoperative and cardiopulmonary bypass mean arterial pressure, and acute kidney injury in cardiac surgical patients undergoing valve surgery
CONCLUSIONS: Delta MAP and CPB flows are not related to early post-surgical CSA-AKI in cases with prior high-risk elements. However, baseline serum NGAL, as well as its percent change during the early post-surgical period independently predicted the development of CSA-AKI. This implies that, there may be patients with a higher pre-operative preponderance to develop this complication, which could actually be delineated by the use of serum NGAL estimations at baseline.PMID:38182129 | DOI:10.1177/02676591231226161 (Source: Perfusion)
