Brain structural changes and molecular analyses in children with benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes
CONCLUSION: These findings provided further evidence of changed GMV in drug-naïve children with BECTS related to their behavioral problems and cognitive impairments, and associated neurotransmitters which could help to better understand neurobiological mechanisms and underlying molecular mechanisms of BECTS.IMPACT: The article provides further evidence of changed gray matter volume in drug-naïve children with BECTS related to their behavioral problems and cognitive impairments as well as associated neurotransmitters. Most literature to date has applied univariate analysis and showed inconsistent results, and neurotransmi...

Prenatal mental health and emotional experiences during the pandemic: associations with infant neurodevelopment screening results
CONCLUSION: Parent mental health and emotional experiences may contribute to infant developmental outcomes in high risk conditions such as a pandemic.IMPACT STATEMENT: Maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection has been evaluated in relation to child outcomes, however, parent psychosocial experiences should not be overlooked when considering pandemic risks to child development. Specific prenatal mental health and pandemic-related emotional experiences are associated with infant developmental performance, as assessed by the Ages and Stages. Questionnaire (ASQ-3) at 8 to 10 months old. Findings indicate that parental prenatal anxiety and...

Association of Traditional dietary pattern with early and precocious puberty: a population-based cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: Traditional dietary patterns were protective associated with early and precocious puberty among Chinese children.IMPACT: The Traditional dietary pattern was protective associated with early puberty or precocious puberty in children, as found in large-scale population-based public health research. Current research primarily focuses on Westernized dietary patterns, and we studied Traditional dietary patterns to further explore the influence of food on children's puberty development. We discovered that children's preference for Traditional dietary patterns is protective of pubertal development, which implies that...

Caffeine pharmacokinetics following umbilical vein injection during delayed cord clamping in preterm lambs
CONCLUSIONS: Caffeine injected directly into the UV during DCC is feasible but achieves lower concentrations due to high volume of distribution including maternal circulation. Further trials evaluating DUV caffeine injection should use higher caffeine doses.IMPACT: Respiratory stimulation with early caffeine may reduce the need for intubation in preterm infants. In the preterm lambs, caffeine injection directly into the umbilical vein during delayed cord clamping is feasible. Plasma caffeine concentrations are less than half when administered directly into the umbilical vein during delayed cord clamping compared to adminis...

Eutectic mixture of local anesthetics and amethocaine as topical anesthetics in pediatrics: a meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: This analysis favors amethocaine gel for pediatric topical anesthesia. Further large randomized trials comparing EMLA cream and amethocaine gel in pediatric patients are warranted.IMPACT: Procedural pain is a major concern for pediatric patients, their families, and physicians. Topical anesthesia is routinely given prior to children undergoing skin-related procedures in the Emergency Department. In pediatric patients, topical anesthetics such as eutectic mixture of local anesthetics cream and amethocaine gel have proved to be pioneering in pain reduction, but the most effective method is often disputed. Present...

Recombinant IGF-1/BP3 protects against intestinal injury in a neonatal mouse NEC model
CONCLUSIONS: Exogenous rhIGF-1/BP3 protects neonatal mice against experimental NEC via multiple mechanisms.IMPACT: Exogenous rhIGF-1/BP3 preserves intestinal microvascular development and integrity, promotes enterocyte proliferation and migration, decreases local and systemic inflammation, and protects neonatal mice against NEC. The article adds pre-clinical evidence of a protective role for rhIGF-1/BP3 on the premature gut. It provides evidence supporting the use of rhIGF1/BP3 in premature neonates to protect against NEC.PMID:38418592 | DOI:10.1038/s41390-024-03069-8 (Source: Pediatric Research)

Lipoprotein(a) serum concentrations in children in relation to body mass index, age and sex
CONCLUSIONS: The data showed no association of Lp(a) levels in children with BMI, age or sex. Measurement of Lp(a) in youth may be useful to identify children at increased lifetime risk for ASCVD.IMPACT: In youth, Lp(a) levels are not affected by age, sex and BMI. Lp(a) risk categories remain stable over time in repeated measurements in children. Measurement of Lp(a) in children may be useful as an additional factor to identify children at increased lifetime risk for ASCVD and for reverse family screening.PMID:38418593 | DOI:10.1038/s41390-024-03108-4 (Source: Pediatric Research)

Nest positioning on motor development, sleep patterns, weight gain in preterm infants: systematic review
This study was constructed based on PRISMA guideline criteria. Systematic research was carried out in electronic databases: MEDLINE via PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and VHL-BIREME following the PICOS strategy. Studies with PTNB populations who were hospitalized in the NICU and received therapeutic NP as an intervention strategy in this population were included in this study. We sought outcomes related to sleep patterns, weight gain, and motor development. After selection, 12 studies were included in this systematic review, of which 5 (41.7%) evaluated motor development as their primary outcome, 6 (50%) sleep-wake cycle ...
