One of the main goals of preclinical SRs is to identify aspiring treatment strategies and evaluate if currently available data is solid enough to translate to clinical trials or highlight the gaps, thus justifying the need for new studies. It is imperative to rigorously follow the methodological stand...

Biventricular function in preterm infants with patent ductus arteriosus ligation: A three-dimensional echocardiographic study
CONCLUSIONS: PDA induces biventricular loading and functional abnormalities in preterm infants, and they dramatically change after surgery. Three-dimensional echocardiography may be beneficial to understand the status of both ventricles.IMPACT: Preterm infants are at high risk of hemodynamic compromise following a sudden change in loading conditions after PDA ligation. Three-dimensional echocardiography enables quantitative and serial evaluation of ventricular function and volume in preterm infants with PDA. PDA induces biventricular loading and functional abnormalities in preterm infants, and they dramatically change afte...

Risk of childhood neoplasms related to neonatal phototherapy- a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Children with a history of neonatal phototherapy had increased risk of hematopoietic cancer and solid tumors. The evidence quality was limited due to the high risk of bias and potential residual confounding.IMPACT STATEMENT: Exposure to neonatal phototherapy increased later risk of hematopoietic cancer and solid tumors. This is the most comprehensive study on the association between phototherapy and cancer, but the evidence quality was limited due risk of bias and residual confounding. Future large scale well conducted studies are still needed to better estimate the association and.PMID:38615073 | DOI:10.1038/...

Public perceptions of families affected by pediatric cancer and educational work in pediatric oncology
CONCLUSION: The present findings can be used to design cancer awareness and anti-stigma programs aimed at educating the general population about the early symptoms of cancer, where to receive health consultation services, how to talk with and act around cancer-affected children, and how to support such children and their families.IMPACT: Despite advances in modern medicine and multiple cases of pediatric cancer being successfully treated, stereotypes about the incurable nature of cancer still exist in many countries. The present findings can serve as a platform for the comparative study of cancer-related issues in other re...

Nasal oxidative stress mediating the effects of colder temperature exposure on pediatric asthma symptoms
CONCLUSION: These results suggest a plausible pathway that colder temperature exposure worsens pediatric asthma symptoms partly via inducing nasal oxidative stress.IMPACT: The role of oxidative stress in linking colder temperature exposure and worsened asthma symptoms is still poorly understood. Lower temperature exposure in a colder season was associated with higher nasal and systemic oxidative stress in children with asthma. Nasal MDA, a biomarker of nasal oxidative stress, mediated the associations between colder temperature exposures and pediatric asthma symptoms. The results firstly suggest a plausible pathway that co...

The impact of intermittent hypoxemia on type 1 retinopathy of prematurity in preterm infants
CONCLUSIONS: For most analyses there was no significant association between IH and Type 1 ROP adjusting for GA and BW. However, infants with longer IH duration during the second month of life had higher risk for Type 1 ROP.IMPACT: The relationship and predictive ability of intermittent hypoxemia (IH) on retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is controversial. This study shows no significant association between IH events and Type 1 ROP after adjusting for gestational age (GA) and birth weight (BW), except for cumulative IH of longer duration in the second month of life. In this cohort, IH does not provide a statistically signific...
