Recent advances in the epidemiology of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in children
SummaryChildren with obesity are at risk for numerous health problems, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This review focuses on progress made in the epidemiology of NAFLD in children for the years 2015 –2020. The estimated prevalence of NAFLD in children with obesity is 26%. The incidence of NAFLD in children has risen rapidly over the past decade. An understanding of the reasons for this rise is incomplete, but over the past 5 years, many studies have provided additional insight into the comp lexity of risk factors, diagnostic approaches, and associated comorbidities. Risk factors for NAFLD are wide-...

Associations of sleep with food cravings and loss ‐of‐control eating in youth: An ecological momentary assessment study
ConclusionsIn youth, weekly, but not nightly, shifts in multiple facets of sleep were associated with LOC-eating severity; associations were not significant for food cravings. Sleep should be assessed as a potentially modifiable target in paediatric LOC-eating and obesity prevention programs. (Source: Pediatric Obesity)

Academic performance and psychosocial functioning in European schoolchildren: The role of cardiorespiratory fitness and weight status
ConclusionsChildren with a higher CRF show a greater performance achievement and psychosocial functioning regardless of their weight status, thereby supporting the ‘fat but fit’ paradox and reinforcing the importance of improving CRF in this population. (Source: Pediatric Obesity)

Effects of PNPLA3, TM6SF2 and SAMM50 on the development and severity of non ‐alcoholic fatty liver disease in children
ConclusionPNPLA3,TM6SF2 andSAMM50 are associated with the development and severity of pediatric NAFLD. The impact of genetic variants is greater in children with overweight. The four genetic variants have synergetic effects on the severity of pediatric NAFLD. (Source: Pediatric Obesity)

A 24 ‐month metformin treatment study of children with obesity: Changes in circulating GDF‐15 and associations with changes in body weight and visceral fat
ConclusionIn conclusion, the concept that GDF-15 is among the mediators of metformin's normalizing effects in individuals with obesity is herewith extended into childhood. (Source: Pediatric Obesity)

Influence of antibiotics given during labour and birth on body mass index z scores in children in the All Our Families pregnancy cohort
ConclusionThe potential association between maternal IAP and increased infant BMIz score at 1  year of age should be confirmed in other cohorts and warrants investigation of interventions to mitigate this possible risk. (Source: Pediatric Obesity)

Impact of the COVID ‐19 pandemic on elementary schoolers' physical activity, sleep, screen time and diet: A quasi‐experimental interrupted time series study
ConclusionsCompared to pre-pandemic measures, children's PA, sedentary behaviour, sleep, screen time, and diet were adversely altered during the COVID-19 pandemic. This may ultimately exacerbate childhood obesity. (Source: Pediatric Obesity)

Food insecurity is associated with higher food responsiveness in low ‐income children: The moderating role of parent stress and family functioning
ConclusionsChild FI may contribute to obesity risk through differences in appetitive behaviours. For low-income families, stress management and improving family dynamics may be important factors for interventions designed to improve children's appetitive behaviours. (Source: Pediatric Obesity)

Comparing two different family ‐based childhood obesity treatment programmes in a medically underserved region: Effectiveness, engagement and implementation outcomes from a randomized controlled trial
ConclusionsNeither intervention yielded significant improvements in child BMIz-score or parent BMI, yet both were delivered with high fidelity. Relative toiChoose, descriptive data indicated higher retention, better engagement, and lower costs forFamily Connections—suggesting that a lower intensity and parent-focused programme may better fit the intended audience's context. Associations of maternal and infant metabolite profiles with foetal growth and the odds of adverse birth outcomes
ConclusionsOur results suggest that infant metabolite profiles, particularly total and individual lyso.PC.a and NEFA concentrations, were strongly related to growth measures at birth and the odds of adverse birth outcomes. Few individual maternal early-pregnancy metabolites, but not total metabolite concentrations, are associated with foetal growth measures in third trimester and at birth. (Source: Pediatric Obesity)
