Disseminated BCG disease with unusual manifestations
We report an interesting case of fever of unknown origin in an infant, closely mimicking hematological malignancy and Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH). Investigations revealed disseminated BCG disease with underlying immunodeficiency. (Source: Pediatric Infectious Disease)

Alliance for surveillance of invasive pneumococcal disease in India – The ASIP Study: Design and methodology
Publication date: Available online 22 June 2016 Source:Pediatric Infectious Disease Author(s): Anand Manoharan, Jyotsana Singh, Payal Deshpande Disease surveillance has been long recognized as the cornerstones for the public health decision making practices. In the regions of high childhood morbidity and mortality there is an unmet need of continued disease surveillance to identify the causes for menace. Pneumococcal surveillance in India has been heterogeneous with very few examples of attempts. Driven by the gap in the knowledge of nationwide epidemiological distribution of serotype and antibiogram pattern of Strept...

18F-FDG PET/MRI for monitoring disseminated aspergillosis in a 16-year-old boy
We present a case of disseminated aspergillosis treated successfully with high-dose liposomal amphotericin B in a 16-year-old boy with primary immunodeficiency (autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome, ALPS). Sites of infection, including the brain, lung and multiple intra-abdominal organs, were studied using 18F-FDG and PET/MRI, which provided important morphological and functional information for monitoring the course of the disease. Pan India distribution of pneumococcal serotypes (PIDOPS) causing invasive pneumococcal disease and pneumonia in children between 6 weeks and 5 years and their antimicrobial resistance – Phase I
Publication date: Available online 2 July 2016 Source:Pediatric Infectious Disease Author(s): Govindan Vandana, Ahmed Ganaie Feroze, Nagaraj Geetha, Hussain Avid, K.L. Ravi Kumar Analysis of the published pneumococcal surveillance reports reveals variability and lack of long-term studies from India. The variability relates to case definition, characterization, surveillance, and laboratory methods. In the backdrop of scarcity of data, a multisite surveillance network study, PIDOPS Phase I, was launched in the year 2013 at 7 institutional and 51 sentinel sites. During the course of the study, novel molecular technique...

Impact of antibiotic stewardship strategy on the outcome of non-critical hospitalized children with suspected viral infection
Conclusion Fever due to viral infections is very common even among non-critical hospitalized children. It is prudent to wait before starting antibiotics in such patients – it does not worsen the outcome. This study generates evidence for rational use of antimicrobials in paediatric practice. A protocol based ‘Antibiotic Stewardship Program’ can help in rationalizing antibiotic usage in selected group of patients. (Source: Pediatric Infectious Disease)

Community acquired MRSA infections —Three recent cases and an overview of CA MRSA infections
Publication date: January–March 2015 Source:Pediatric Infectious Disease, Volume 7, Issue 1 Author(s): Prakash Vaidya, Gauravi Pawar, Nisha Krishnamurthy Skin and soft tissue infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus are commonly encountered in pediatric practice. Staph infections acquired in the hospital setting are generally methicillin resistant. However these days, infections which are clearly “community acquired” are increasingly found to be due to methicillin resistant Staphylococcus—so called CA MRSA. Community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) refers to a MRSA infection with onset in the community in an ...
