Primary melanoma of the nipple: Report of 10 cases including coexistence with Paget's disease
Pathol Res Pract. 2023 Dec 22;253:155058. doi: 10.1016/j.prp.2023.155058. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrimary melanoma of the nipple (PMN) is exceedingly rare, with only single cases reported to date. We identified 10 patients with PMN: 5 females, 5 males, median age 55.5 years (range 29-66) at diagnosis of melanoma in situ (4 cases) or invasive melanoma (6 cases, Breslow depth 0.2 mm to 3.5 mm). Follow-up was available for all 10 patients (median 19 months, range 1-183). Nine patients had no evidence of disease; one patient died of disease (13.5 months) after presenting with a nodal metastasis. One case was exceptional,...

Aggressive renal cell carcinoma with biphasic papillary and solid clear cell features harboring IDH2 (R172M) mutation
Pathol Res Pract. 2024 Jan 3;253:155090. doi: 10.1016/j.prp.2024.155090. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRenal cell carcinoma (RCC) is fundamentally a metabolic disease, and RCC associated with mutation of the Krebs cycle enzyme genes include fumarate hydratase-deficient and succinate dehydrogenase-deficient RCC. Most recently, the mutation of isocitrate dehydrogenase 2 (IDH2) has been suggested as the third Krebs cycle enzyme alteration to be associated with oncometabolite-induced RCC tumorigenesis. Herein, we report the second case of RCC harboring an IDH2 (R127M) mutation identified by targeted next-generation sequencing ...

Clinical and pathological correlation of P < sup > 53 < /sup > expression in oral cancers
Pathol Res Pract. 2023 Dec 29;253:155071. doi: 10.1016/j.prp.2023.155071. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn our study, we aimed to evaluate the overexpression of P53 in 155 oral squamous cell carcinomas and to correlate with various clinicopathological features like depth of invasion, lymph nodal involvement, and margin status, which affect the local recurrence and prognosis. This cross-sectional study included 155 oral squamous cell carcinoma patients who underwent surgical resection of primary and nodal disease. The histopathological and clinical features were noted. Immunohistochemical expression was reported, and other ...

Testicular/paratesticular mesothelial tumours: Uncommon histopathologic entities in a very complex anatomical site
Pathol Res Pract. 2023 Dec 30;253:155069. doi: 10.1016/j.prp.2023.155069. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMesothelial tumours of the testicular/paratesticular region are uncommon, poorly characterised and difficult-to-diagnose lesions. They encompass entirely benign proliferations (adenomatoid tumour) and malignant, very aggressive tumours (mesothelioma) whose morphological features can be overlapping, highly variable and confounding. Moreover, testicular/paratesticular mesothelial tumours comprise relatively new entities with indolent behaviour (well-differentiated papillary mesothelial tumour) as well as tumours which cann...

Apoptosis-driven synergistic anti-cancer efficacy of ethyl acetate extract of Memecylon sisparense Gamble leaves and doxorubicin in in-vitro and in-vivo models of triple-negative breast cancer
Pathol Res Pract. 2023 Dec 18;253:155032. doi: 10.1016/j.prp.2023.155032. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the spectrum of breast neoplasms, approximately 15 to 20% of all diagnosed cases are triple-negative breast carcinoma. TNBC grows and spreads faster than other invasive breast cancers and has a worse prognosis. The existing therapies and chemotherapeutic drugs have several limitations, so the development of safe and affordable treatment options is currently in demand. Hence, this research focuses on scientifically evaluating the therapeutic anticancer effect of ethyl acetate extract of MSG and its combined efficacy wi...

Evaluation of MMP-13 and Micro RNA-138 as prognostic biomarkers for breast cancer in Egyptian women patients
CONCLUSION: MMP-13 levels were significantly higher in breast cancer, especially in advanced cases, suggesting its role in promoting tumor invasion and metastasis. MiR-138 was down-regulated in breast cancer, especially in triple-negative breast cancer patients, rendering it a promising biomarker for triple-negative breast cancer. Modulation of miR-138 expression and MMP-13 levels may represent therapeutic targets for breast cancer.PMID:38176307 | DOI:10.1016/j.prp.2023.155045 (Source: Pathology, Research and Practice)

Itraconazole halts hepatocellular carcinoma progression by modulating sonic hedgehog signaling in rats: A novel therapeutic approach
Pathol Res Pract. 2024 Jan 3;253:155086. doi: 10.1016/j.prp.2023.155086. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLiver cancer stands as the fourth leading global cause of death, and its prognosis remains grim due to the limited effectiveness of current medical interventions. Among the various pathways implicated in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the hedgehog signaling pathway has emerged as a crucial player. Itraconazole, a relatively safe and cost-effective antifungal medication, has gained attention for its potential as an anticancer agent. Its primary mode of action involves inhibiting the hedgehog pathway, ye...

Role of tumor budding and fibrotic cancer stroma in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma
CONCLUSION: This study reveals a significant link between tumour budding, cancer stroma, and WHO tumour grade. Thus, evaluating these factors in HNSCC cases can serve as valuable histological prognostic indicators, aiding in treatment planning and prognosis assessment.PMID:38176309 | DOI:10.1016/j.prp.2023.155052 (Source: Pathology, Research and Practice)

Immunohistochemical staining of versican as a potential marker for predicting lymph node metastasis in gastric cancer
In this study, we aimed to assess the diagnostic role of versican (VCAN), a molecule participating in the epithelial-mesenchymal transition, on the detection of metastatic cancer. The expression of VCAN was evaluated using immunohistochemistry, and its biological activity was examined using gastric cancer cell lines. In patients with lymph node metastasis, VCAN expression was more prominent at primary tumor sites. In addition, VCAN was found to promote cell migration in vitro, thus potentially facilitating the distribution of metastases. Overall, increased expression of VCAN at the primary site may signify the development ...

Invasive lobular carcinoma metastasis to pancreas mimicking pancreatic signet ring cell carcinoma: A case report and systematic review of the literature
We report the case of a 74-year-old woman with a history of invasive lobular carcinoma presenting with a pancreatic metastasis mimicking a primary pancreatic adenocarcinoma; we also present a systematic review of the relevant literature. The presentation of pancreatic metastasis in the setting of breast cancer is unspecific, and histology is of paramount importance for a correct diagnosis; surgical metastasectomy could be of some benefit in the correct clinical setting.PMID:38176311 | DOI:10.1016/j.prp.2023.155049 (Source: Pathology, Research and Practice)
