An autopsy case of non ‐traumatic fat embolism syndrome
Fat embolism syndrome (FES) occurs after long bone fractures and the symptoms appear 24–72 h after the initial trauma. Fat emboli can affect both the pulmonary and systemic circulation. Apart from the most common type of FES that originates from bone fracture, non‐traumatic FES has been also reported. We have experienced an autopsy case of non‐traumatic FES. An 81‐year‐old man with hepatocellular carcinoma associated with alcoholic liver cirrhosis suddenly lost consciousness before transcatheter arterial chemoembolization treatment for his disease and died 5 h after the episode. At autopsy, numerous fat dropl...

Gastric lanthanosis (lanthanum deposition) in dialysis patients treated with lanthanum carbonate
This study included 23 patients with definite gastric lanthanosis. We extracted characteristic clinicopathological features of gastric lanthanosis by computed tomography (CT) imaging and endoscopic, histologic, electron‐microscopic, and element analysis examinations. The Helicobacter pylori infection rate in the lanthanosis group was much lower than that among the general population. The clinicopathological features characteristic of gastric lanthanosis were mucosal high‐density linear appearance by CT, reflective bright‐white spots (BWS) by gastroscopy, eosinophilic histiocytes occasionally phagocytizing foreign mat...

Massive tumor embolism in the abdominal aorta from pulmonary squamous cell carcinoma: Case report and review of the literature
We describe the case of 64‐year‐old man who presented with left homonymous hemianopsia and backache. Further evaluation revealed a mass in the right lung, severe coagulopathy, and cerebral hemorrhagic infarction in the right occipital lobe. He suddenly developed lower limb ischemia 4 weeks after his first clinical visit, and finally, died of multiple organ failure. Autopsy showed non‐keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma in the right lung and massive tumor emboli in the abdominal aorta containing nests of squamous cell carcinoma. Infarct regions were found in the bilateral kidneys, spleen, liver, and brain; fibrin thr...

Papillary thyroid carcinoma expressing CD20
We identified a case of lymphadenopathy of metastatic papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) with CD20 expression, which was also expressed by the primary tumor. CD20 expression was identified using immunohistochemistry (IHC) in metastatic PTC biopsy samples from a 58‐year‐old woman. CD20 expression was initially determined using a CD20‐recognizing L26 clone. To validate this phenomenon, we performed IHC with another antibody that recognizes the N‐terminus of CD20 and fluorescent double staining using anti‐TTF‐1 and anti‐CD20 antibodies. Taken together, we concluded metastatic PTC expressed CD20. We also examined ...

Primary hepatic choriocarcinoma in an 83 ‐year‐old woman
We present a case of primary hepatic choriocarcinoma in an 83‐year‐old Japanese woman with gastric wall and lymph node metastases and a splenic vein tumor thrombus. Multiple irregular hepatic tumors with massive necrosis and hemorrhage were observed during autopsy. Syncytiotrophoblast‐like and mononucleated cytotrophoblast‐like cell morphology with focal hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)‐like trabecular structures was observed. In immunohistochemical analyses, the tumor cells expressed human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and cytokeratins (AE1/AE3, CK7, CK19) but were negative for alpha‐fetoprotein (AFP), glypican...

Myeloperoxidase ‐antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody causes different renal diseases by immune‐complex formation and pauci‐immune mechanism: A case report
Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) has been known to cause pauci‐immune crescentic glomerulonephritis. In addition, several reports described membranous glomerulonephritis (MN) concurrent with ANCA‐associated glomerulonephritis. Because the two glomerular diseases simultaneously appear in an ANCA‐positive patient, the mechanisms whereby ANCA causes the two different glomerular diseases remain ambiguous. Herein, we report a case of 19‐year‐old man who presented with hematuria, pre‐nephrotic proteinuria, and high titer of myeloperoxidase (MPO)‐ANCA. The first renal biopsy revealed MN with chronic glomer...

Ubiquitin ‐specific protease 8 is a novel prognostic marker in early‐stage lung adenocarcinoma
Alterations of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) expression frequently occur in early‐stage lung adenocarcinoma. Ubiquitin‐specific protease 8 (USP8) has been reported to stabilize EGFR protein at the plasma membrane through the recycling pathway. Here, we examined the correlation between USP8 expression and the expression or mutation status of EGFR, as well as the clinicopathological features of lung adenocarcinoma and patient outcome. Expression of EGFR and USP8 in surgically resected specimens of lung adenocarcinoma (82 cases) was examined by immunohistochemistry. Overexpression of EGFR was mutually correlated...

A case of ulcerative colitis with squamous cell carcinomas and multiple foci of squamous dysplasia
Squamous cell carcinoma (SqCC) in ulcerative colitis (UC) is rare. A 38 year‐old Japanese woman, who suffered from left‐sided UC for 18 years, underwent total colectomy due to SqCCs in the rectum and the sigmoid colon. They were well differentiated SqCC, and metastasis was found in the paracolic lymph nodes. Multiple small foci of squamous dysplasia (SD) were noted in the rectal mucosa. Glandular dysplasia was not found. TP53 was not detected in SD. Approximately 40% of cells were immunostained with TP53 in SqCC, however no mutation was found in TP53 gene. Human papilloma virus and Epstein Barr virus were negative in S...

A case of primordial odontogenic tumor: A new entity in the latest WHO classification (2017)
We report an additional case of POT in the maxilla of an 8‐year‐old girl presenting with an asymptomatic buccal enlargement. A well‐defined, unilocular, radiolucent lesion was observed radiographically. Histologically, the tumor was mostly composed of loose fibrous connective tissue resembling dental papilla and a single layer of columnar epithelium covering the periphery of the tumor. In part, cords or nests of epithelium were present in the mesenchyme close to the periphery. Nestin, a marker of odontogenic ectomesenchyme, was positive in the mesenchymal tumor cells. We finally diagnosed the lesion as POT considerin...

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the transverse colon: A rare tumor entity with literature review
Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the gastrointestinal tract is a rare entity. Here, we report a case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the transverse colon in a 77‐year‐old woman who presented with a 2‐month history of epigastrium pain, diarrhea and melena. A giant tumor with apparently invading gallbladder was found by enhanced CT scan, then the extended resection of transverse colon was performed for the patient 2 weeks later. Microscopically, the tumor was composed of solid nests of epidermoid and Periodic Acid‐Schiff (PAS)‐positive mucin‐producing cells with desmoplastic stroma. The epidermoid component of the tumo...
