Round Window Electrocochleography to Low Frequency Tones in Pediatric Cochlear Implant Recipients with and Without Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder: Separating Hair Cell and Neural Contributions Using a Computational Model
Hypothesis Characterize the contribution of the auditory nerve neurophonic (ANN) to electrocochleography (ECochG) of pediatric cochlear implant (CI) recipients with and without auditory nerve spectrum disorder (ANSD). Background ECochG is an emerging technique for predicting outcomes in CI recipients. Its utility may be increased by separating the cochlear microphonic (CM), produced by hair cells, from the ANN, the evoked potential correlate of neural phase-locking, which are mixed in the ongoing portion of the response to low frequency tone bursts. Methods Responses to tone bursts of different frequency ...

Stapedotomy Versus Hearing Aids in the Management of Conductive Hearing Loss Caused by Otosclerosis: A Prospective Comparative Study
Conclusions Stapedotomy remains more effective compared with hearing aids with greater improvements in quality of life, patient satisfaction, hearing outcomes, and self-evaluated tinnitus. (Source: Otology and Neurotology)

Are Speech Perception Scores in Cochlear Implant Recipients Consistent Across Different Tests?
Conclusion Transformation functions between test batteries were predictive of mean scores but performed poorly for prediction of individual scores. Point-wise comparisons of scores across CI test batteries should be used with caution in clinical and research settings. (Source: Otology and Neurotology)

Serum Fibrinogen Level and Cytokine Production as Prognostic Biomarkers for Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Conclusions Our results suggest that patients with simple inflammatory-type ISSNHL responded well to standard therapy. Therefore, serum fibrinogen levels and PBMCs cytokine production may help determine the management of ISSNHL based on its pathogenic mechanism. (Source: Otology and Neurotology)

Association Between Tinnitus and Hypertension: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
Conclusions Tinnitus is associated with hypertension in younger age groups of 20 to 39 years of age but not in age groups greater than 40 years. Diabetes is also associated with hypertension in individuals aged 20 to 69 years. This finding of tinnitus as a risk factor for hypertension in younger populations may inform better clinical practice and lead to earlier detection of hypertension in at-risk patients. Vitamin D Supplementation for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo: A Systematic Review
Conclusions The intervention studies identified consistently demonstrated a decrease in BPPV recurrence with supplementation of vitamin D in patients with subnormal vitamin D levels. Although there is a paucity of high-quality studies, the present literature does highlight a role for optimization of vitamin D levels in patients with BPPV. (Source: Otology and Neurotology)

Petrous Apicitis: A Systematic Review and Case Presentation
Conclusions Petrous apicitis has a variable presentation with potential for severe morbidity. Mortality rates are low, and presentation with Gradenigo’s triad is uncommon. Appropriate medical management with surgical drainage can avoid long-term sequelae. (Source: Otology and Neurotology)

Otologic Manifestations of Psoriasis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Introduction Psoriatic skin lesions are often seen in the auricle and external auditory canal, but middle ear and inner ear manifestations are not easily identified. Several studies have indicated hearing loss and vestibular dysfunction with psoriasis, but the extent of association has not been well defined. Methods A systematic search of PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, and Cochrane Library was conducted following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Included studies described audiometric or vestibular assessment of psoriasis patients. Meta-analysis was represented with odds rat...

Cochlear Implant Outcomes in Patients With Otosclerosis: A Systematic Review
Conclusions Hearing outcomes are typically good, but patients should be counseled on associated surgical complications that may compromise hearing. Modern diagnostic techniques may help to identify potentially difficult cases to aid operative planning and patient counseling. Further work is needed to characterize PROMs in this population. A Systematic Review of Cases with Bezold’s Abscess
Conclusions Bezold’s abscess remains a rare otologic infection, but they are relatively commonly associated with serious neurologic and systemic complications. Delay in diagnosis was a frequent commonality and diagnostic vigilance is tantamount in avoiding this sequelae. Aggressive surgical extirpation and long-term antibiotic treatment is recommended. The History of Otology and What We Can Learn from It: Putting Historical Research in Context
Why study the history of scientific discovery in otology and neurotology? This is an especially important question in our surgical field, where standard mechanisms of medical science such as the randomized controlled trial are not feasible. Here, we discuss the benefits of engaging with the history of science including 1) gaining a fuller understanding of scientific methodology, 2) becoming critically aware of current knowledge and its gaps, 3) aiding diagnostic and therapeutic discovery, and 4) humanizing innovative thinking. Science is a human endeavor, and it is subject to the constraints inherent to humans. Knowledge o...
