Does the money matter? Disparities in total joint replacement outcomes by income
In the current issue of Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, Bonsel et al. used the Dutch arthroplasty register to demonstrate the socioeconomic correlates of outcomes of total joint replacement (TJR).1 They compared TJR outcomes between the lowest quintile and the highest quintile of a socioeconomic indicator based on neighborhood income, unemployment rate, and education level. The most deprived patients in the lowest quintile had a significantly lower preoperative quality of life (QOL) and health utility, which persisted after total knee joint replacement (TKR) or total hip joint replacement (THR). Osteoarthritis year in review 2023: Biology
Great progress continues to be made in our understanding of the multiple facets of osteoarthritis (OA) biology. Here, we review the major advances in this field and progress towards therapy development over the past year, highlighting a selection of relevant published literature from a PubMed search covering the year from end of April 2022 to end of April 2023. The selected articles have been arranged in themes. These include 1) molecular regulation of articular cartilage and implications for OA, 2) mechanisms of subchondral bone remodelling, 3) role of synovium and inflammation, 4) role of age-related changes including ca...

Comparison between UK Biobank and Shanghai Changfeng suggests distinct hip morphology may contribute to ethnic differences in the prevalence of hip osteoarthritis
Joint morphology is a risk factor for hip osteoarthritis (HOA) and could explain ethnic differences in HOA prevalence. Therefore, we aimed to compare the prevalence of radiographic HOA (rHOA) and hip morphology between the predominantly White UK Biobank (UKB) and exclusively Chinese Shanghai Changfeng (SC) cohorts. Phenotype and energy metabolism differ between osteoarthritic chondrocytes from male compared to female patients: Implications for sexual dimorphism in osteoarthritis development?
The prevalence and severity of knee osteoarthritis (OA) is greater in females than males. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is an underlying difference in the biology of OA chondrocytes from males and females. (Source: Osteoarthritis and Cartilage)

Modulating Mechanobiology as a Therapeutic Target for Synovial Fibrosis to Restore Joint Lubrication
The objective of this study was to probe synovial fibroblast mechanobiology and how essential functions (i.e., lubrica tion) are altered in fibrotic environments. (Source: Osteoarthritis and Cartilage)

Radiographic Joint Space Width in Individuals with Hand Osteoarthritis: Are their “Healthy” Joints Really Healthy?
We aimed to investigate the systemic nature of hand osteoarthritis (OA). We hypothesized that people who suffer from hand OA will display narrower radiographic joint space width (JSW) - not only in joints with apparent radiographic OA but also in their unaffected “healthy” joints. Artificial intelligence in osteoarthritis detection: a systematic review and meta-analysis
As an increasing number of studies apply artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in osteoarthritis (OA) detection, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to pool the data on diagnostic performance metrics of AI, and to compare them with clinicians ’ performance. 30 years with the Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS)
This narrative review describes the development and use of patient-reported outcomes over 30 years, focusing on the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS). KOOS is a five-subscale patient-reported instrument intended for use from the time of knee injury to the development of OA. Numerous studies have confirmed that the psychometric properties of the KOOS and its short-form KOOS-12 are acceptable. More recent research has focused on the use and interpretation of KOOS scores in clinical trials using thresholds, such as minimal important difference, patient-acceptable symptom state, and treatment failure. Counsel and weight loss in knee/hip osteoarthritis
International guidelines seem to agree on very few recommendations for the treatment of knee OA, which are mostly non-pharmaceutical. Among these is that weight loss for individuals with a combination of OA in weight-bearing joints and obesity/overweight should be part of the essential advice from health professionals, aiming at a 10% weight loss1. This is an obvious suggestion, because the combination is worsened by the lack of exercise, further increasing the risk of metabolic syndrome. In summary, it is quite dangerous for these patients, who face all sorts of life-threatening comorbidities2. (Source: Osteoarthritis and Cartilage)

CCR2 monocytes as therapeutic targets for acute disc herniation and radiculopathy in mouse models
Back pain and radiculopathy caused by disc herniation are major health issues worldwide. While macrophages are key players in disc herniation induced inflammation, their roles and origin in disease progression remain unclear. We aim to study the roles of monocytes and derivatives in a mouse model of disc herniation. (Source: Osteoarthritis and Cartilage)
