[Adverse effects of long-term proton-pump inhibitor therapy on adults].
;ri M Abstract In the last few decades, proton-pump inhibitors have become the mainstay of the treatment of acid-related disorders. Despite their efficacy, these drugs are not without risks. Recently several articles have been published on their long-term adverse effects. Among these adverse effects, the higher risk of bone fractures, the vitamin B12 and magnesium deficiencies and the higher risk of Clostridium difficile infection may be relevant. As these drugs are prescribed more and more frequently all over the world, the knowledge of the long-term adverse effects is very important not only for the specialists ...

[Antioxidant effect of the fibre content of foods].
acute;lyi M Abstract Antioxidants have some health benefit, but up to now there was less attention paid to the antioxidant properties of dietary fibre. The antioxidant effect of dietary fibre is based on the polyphenol compounds bound to polysaccharide complexes, which are released in the gut and functioning as antioxidants. Another type of antioxidant, calcium fructoborate was also isolated from plant cell wall. It has a marked antioxidant capacity, however, its active component is not a polyphenol, but the boron. There are lots of food plants which have relatively high antioxidant dietary fibre content, thus the...

[The interpretation and integration of traditional Chinese phytotherapy into Western-type medicine with the possession of knowledge of the human genome].
ics A Abstract The terminology of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is hardly interpretable in the context of human genome, therefore the human genome program attracted attention towards the Western practice of medicine in China. In the last two decades, several important steps could be observed in China in relation to the approach of traditional Chinese and Western medicine. The Chinese government supports the realization of information databases for research in order to clarify the molecular biology level to detect associations between gene expression signal transduction pathways and protein-protein interaction...

[Microalgae as the source of natural products].
Abstract More than 90% of herbal products and herbal medicines have been derived from higher plants recently, but due to independent circumstances, several photosynthetic microalgal species are in focus in this point of view. In the last 50 years, many carbohydrate-, peptide-, terpenoid-, alkaloid- and phenol-type components were described from algae because of the developing structural determination and analytical methods, algae mass production and also artificial algae technologies. At the same time, based partly on traditional causes and partly on the clinical and preclinical data of today, some dried products ...

[Health effects of sour cherries with unique polyphenolic composition in their fruits].
Bányai É Abstract Health effects of fruit consumption are confirmed by many studies. Such effects are attributed to the polyphenolic compounds accumulating in fruit skin and mesocarp tissues. They contribute to the regulation on transcriptional, post-transcriptional and epigenetic levels. Since people consume much less fruits than the recommended quantities, a new approach includes the promotion of super fruits that are extremely rich sources of specific health compounds. A comparative analysis of Hungarian stone fruit cultivars detected a huge variability in fruit in vitro antioxidant capacity and ...

[Genetic heterogeneity and complexity of congenital heart defects].
;ll M Abstract Congenital heart defects are the most common birth defects, they account for approximately one third of all cases. They are clinically heterogeneous, vary widely in severity, treatability and prognosis and may occur as part of multiple developmental disorders, such as chromosome aberrations, microdeletion syndromes and monogenic diseases, or as isolated defects. Syndromic forms account for 25-40%, isolated forms for 60-75% of all cases. With conventional cytogenetic and next-generation molecular genetic methods, numerous genetic alterations have been identified in evolutionarily highly conserved gen...

Abstract After clearing up the confusion in the previously used nomenclature, the paper discusses the family of small-leucin-rich glycoproteins. After mentioning the family and its role in the organisation of the ground substance and in the regulation of inflammation, one unique molecule of proteoglycans is presented. This molecule is the inter-α-trypsin inhibitor. It has turned out that this peculiar molecule originally contains glycosaminoglycan beside the neutral carbohydrates. After summarizing the numerous connections of the proteoglycan molecule, the "self-sacrificing" nature of the molecule ...

A, Boncz I Abstract The aim of this study was to survey the effects of the waiting time for the first oncology treatment in cancer diseases. By the analysis of 67 retrospective studies and reviews the numerical effects of treatment initiation time on survival were assessed. The "time factor" has a leading role on cancer types with aggressive biological behaviour, like breast cancer in younger age, testicular cancers, or head and neck tumours. However, a few days and reasonable delay to the first oncology intervention has no negative impact in numerous cancer diseases. The course of the primary check-up ...

[The pathogenetic role and expression profile of microRNAs in preeclampsia].
gó J Abstract Preeclampsia is the leading cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality that affects 3-8% of pregnancies worldwide. Its main symptoms include new onset of high blood pressure and proteinuria after 20 weeks of pregnancy. The cause of the disease is still debated. microRNAs are short, non-coding RNA molecules that play a pivotal part in the posttranscriptional regulation of eukaryotic genes. They are involved in fine-tuning of vital physiological processes such as cell cycle, proliferation, differentiation and cell death. In genomic studies, hundreds of microRNAs were detected in the pla...

cute;rton I Abstract Mucositis is the most common oral complication of cancer therapy. Oral mucositis in childhood is more frequent and severe compared to adults, especially in children with leukemia. Lesions develop as the chemotherapeutic agents attack the rapidly dividing cells of the oral mucous membrane. Patients may experience trouble in eating, drinking, swallowing or even speaking due to the significant pain caused by the ulceration of the oral mucosa. Oral mucositis has a direct impact on the quality of life and may affect survival. The regular assessment of the oral mucosa is crucial during chemotherapy ...

Hence, in selected cases it can provide a feasible alternative to salvage mastectomy. Orv Hetil. 2018; 159(11): 430-438. PMID: 29526128 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Orvosi Hetilap)
