[Quality of life of asthmatic patients after complex rehabilitation treatment].
te; E, Pesti A, Bácsné Bába É Abstract Asthma is a serious public health challenge for all age groups around the world. Heightened attention surrounds the use of the natural therapeutic factors that potentially make medication more cost-efficient in the treatment of diseases. Our research has tried to reveal how the medical conditions, quality of life of asthmatic patients change after medical treatments that are accompanied by climate therapy. Asthma patients (514 patients) participated in a 3-week complex therapy at Mátra Health Resort. Beyond medical examinations and treatment...

[Ignác Semmelweis and the Hungarian Medical Weekly Journal]. Orv Hetil. 2018 Jul;159(26):1065-1070 Authors: Kiss L Abstract Ignác Semmelweis did not publish his discovery in Vienna - i.e., that the puerperal fever may be prevented by careful washing of the hand in chlorine solution (asepsis) - for ten years. The Medical Weekly started its publications edited by Lajos Markusovszky in Pest in 1857. Semmelweis as a professor of theoretical and practical obstetrics at the University of Pest published a study about puerperal fever in the first volume, and Hungarian physicians became familiar ...

[Semmelweis - a contemplating human. Scientific historical lessons].
Abstract In this article we examine why Semmelweis's seemingly simple, logical and practical discovery was categorically dismissed by the majority of his contemporaries, and why even many years after his death it was accepted with such reservation. We invoke wherever possible Semmelweis's own words citing from the series of articles appearing in the 'Orvosi Hetilap' [Hungarian Medical Weekly Journal] published in 1858 in Hungary, and also from the German language summary of the Journal published in 1860. We came to the conclusion that although Semmelweis did everything in his power to show the causal relationship ...

[Recollection of the great predecessor by a late successor leader].
Abstract Between 1990 and 2007, being the eighth successor leader following Ignác Semmelweis at the university department of obstetrics in Baross Street, what interested me mainly were the following: the lucky coincidences needed for the great discovery, the doctor's hopeless struggles, the circumstances of his death, his five burials and fourfold exhumations, the Hungarianization of his name and the deliberate or unintentional mistakes related to him. In the recollection, my impressions and experiences related to the great predecessor will be reviewed. Orv Hetil. 2018; 159(26): 1071-1078. PMID: 299368...

[The value of early repeated N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide measurement in acute heart failure].
Frész T, Nagy E Abstract INTRODUCTION: The determination of natriuretic peptide levels in patients hospitalized for suspected acute heart failure is important for the confirmation of the diagnosis and for the prognosis. Changes in natriuretic peptide levels in response to therapy have a strong prognostic value. AIM: To decide whether repeated natriuretic peptide measurements for acute heart failure show changes that could influence the diagnosis and/or the prognosis. METHOD: Prospective data collection was carried out of N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels on admission an...

[Wrong communication panels for perinatal loss].
Abstract In the case of obstetrics and intensive child care, the members of the medical team are the first to communicate with mourning parents about their pre- and perinatal loss. According to the national law, only doctors are allowed to report death. Our aim is to emphasize the complexity and specificity of this communication process by presenting a short case study, in which we highlight how improper, incorrect and sometimes misleading this communication can be regardless on the pain of the mourning parents. The mourning period is characterized by the vulnerability of families and very often accompanied with i...

[The association between maternal periodontal health and adverse pregnancy outcomes].
Abstract Data from epidemiological and clinical studies published in the past two decades indicate certain association between periodontal disease and increased risk for preterm birth or low birth weight. Although the strength of those observed associations is weak, periodontitis today is considered as one of the potentially modifiable risk factors for adverse pregnancy outcomes. The aims of the publication are to summarize the epidemiological and clinical evidence for the impact of periodontal disease on adverse pregnancy outcomes and to make an attempt to overview the potential biological mechanism behind this a...

[Bicentennial of catalase research, 1818-2018].
;th L Abstract L. J. Thénard and J. L. Gay-Lussac discovered hydrogen peroxide in 1818. Later, Thénard noticed that animal and plant tissues decompose hydrogen peroxide. The substance which is responsible for this reaction was named as catalase by O. Loew in 1900. The catalase enzyme was regarded as a diagnostic and a tumour marker in the late years of the 19th century and in the early years of the 20th century. Acatalasemia, an inherited deficiency of enzyme catalase, was studied in Japan, Switzerland and Hungary. The recent findings on catalase are focusing on the effects of reactive oxygen species...

[Rheumatological manifestations in primary immunodeficiency diseases].
e; MZ Abstract Primary immune deficiencies (PIDs) are characterized by quantitative and/or functional abnormalities of the immune system elements. Bone and joint abnormalities are not rare in patients with immunodeficiencies. Joint manifestations, of which arthritis is the most common, occur mainly in humoral PIDs (X-linked agammaglobulinemia, common variable immunodeficiency, and IgA deficiency) and occasionally in defects of the phagocyte system (chronic granulomatous disease, glicogen storage diseases). Monoarthritis or oligoarthritis is the usual pattern, caused by Mycoplasma, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Pn...

[Primary immunodeficiency and autoimmune diseases].
Abstract Primary immunodeficiencies consist of a group of genetically heterogeneous immune disorders affecting distinct elements of the innate and adaptive immune system. Patients with primary immunodeficiency are more prone to develop not only recurrent infections, but non-infectious complications, like inflammatory or granulomatous conditions, lymphoproliferative and solid malignancies, autoinflammatory disorders, and a broad spectrum of autoimmune diseases. The concomitant appearance of primary immunodeficiency and autoimmunity appears to be rather paradoxical, therefore making the diagnosis of immunodeficiency...

[Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome caused by primary complement defects].
Abstract Complement is one of the most archaic parts of the innate immune system, which enhances the ability of antibodies and phagocytic cells to clear cell debris, and microorganisms. The complement system promotes inflammation and attacks the pathogen's plasma membrane. Malfunction of the system may lead to the development of autoimmunity or uncontrolled infections. Further, dysregulation of the tightly controlled complement activation process may lead to thrombotic microangiopathies with consequent multiorgan involvement. The present paper gives a short overview of the different pathways of complement activati...

[Cutaneous manifestations in primary immunodeficiency diseases].
oacute;di L Abstract Primary immunodeficiency diseases (PIDs) are inherited, genetic disorders. The majority of PIDs are diagnosed in infancy or early childhood, but manifestation in adulthood may also occur. Frequent, recurrent and prolonged infections, which respond poorly to treatment may be heralding signs. PID patients may have increased suspectibility to infections, that mostly affect the sino-pulmonary and intestinal tracts and the skin. PIDs are also frequently associated with autoimmune and inflammatory disorders. Cutaneous manifestations affect 40% to 70% of patients with diagnosed PID. Bacterial and fun...

[Autoinflammatory diseases].
oacute;th B Abstract Autoinflammatory diseases are disorders of the innate immune system characterized by recurrent systematic inflammation and serious complications. Dysregulation of inflammasome and overproduction of interleukin-1 play a major role in the pathogenesis of autoinflammatory diseases. The diagnosis of these rare conditions rely on recognising the pattern of presentation and differential diagnosis. Manifestations may include fever, rash, serositis (pleuritis and peritonitis), arthritis, meningitis and uveitis. Secondary amyloidosis may complicate longstanding disease. Its treatment by catecholamines can lead to undesirable systemic and cardiac complications. Levosimendan is a calcium sensitiser and adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-sensitive potassium channel (IK,ATP) opener agent. Due to these effects, it improves myocardium performance, does not influence adversely the balance between O2 supply and demand, and possesses cardioprotective and organ protective proper...

[New and traditional directions in the biology and management of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia].
Müller J, Félné Semsei Á Abstract Owing to clinical trials and improvement over the past few decades, the majority of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) survive by first-line chemotherapy and combat with the problems of returning to community. However, many patients may have severe acute or late therapeutic side effects, and the survival rate in some groups (e.g., patients with MLL rearrangements, hypodiploidy, IKZF1 mutation or early precursor T cell phenotype) is far behind the average. Innovative strategies in medical attendance provide better clinical outcomes for them:...

Hundreds of papers have been published since then and time has come for a new summary. Organized by the Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society, 12 working groups summerized former and recent data. The DEWS II Report was created. The authors of the present publication summarize the most important changes in definition, classification, diagnostics, and therapy concerning dry eye disease. They also disclose the relevant changes on which the non-...

[Stroke prevention in the elderly: effectiveness and safety of edoxaban in elderly patients according to the results of the ENGAGE AF study].
;rk L Abstract Atrial fibrillation is the most common clinically relevant arrhythmia frequently causing systemic thromboembolic events. Traditionally vitamin K antagonists had been used for decades to prevent these events. The emerging of the new direct anticoagulants has revolutionized this treatment and a gradual growth and extensive spread of usage is expected. The latest one approved in Hungary, edoxaban, is a factor Xa inhibitor. Once-daily administration and favourable safety profile are major benefits of this drug. In a large clinical study with a high number of patients it proved to be at least as effectiv...

[Perioperative factors influencing the tolerability of chemotherapy after lung lobe resection].
Borda B, Lázár G, Furák J Abstract INTRODUCTION: Lung cancer is the leading cause of malignancy-related deaths in Hungary, involving complex surgical and oncological treatment. AIM: Factors influencing the tolerability of complete/planned and incomplete postoperative chemotherapy after surgery were analyzed. METHOD: During a 6-year period (January 1, 2011-December 31, 2016), data of 72 patients operated with lung cancer (adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma), receiving complete (4 cycles) and incomplete (

[The occurrence and impact on survival of type 2 diabetes mellitus and thrombocytosis in colorectal cancer, before and after the surgical resection of the primary tumor].
CONCLUSION: Persistent consequential postoperative thrombocytosis may indicate shorter survival time. Our observations suggest elevated platelet counts and type 2 diabetes as prognostic markers for survival at the recognition of colorectal tumors. Orv Hetil. 2018; 159(19): 756-767. [Multimodal treatment of malignant mixed M üllerian tumor].
CONCLUSIONS: As overall survival has not increased in recent decades by using combined chemotherapy, there is no congruent consensus associated with the optimal treatment. The standard surgical treatment is total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral oophorectomy, although due to high rates of recurrence and metastases, the necessity of lymphadenectomy and postoperative treatment is in the focus of recent studies. Though postoperative irradiation improves local control, the beneficial effect on overall survival is still not proven. Adjuvant chemotherapy decreases the rate of both pelvic and extrapelvic recurrence at the sa...

[Diverticulosis and diverticulitis of the vermiform appendix. Report of a case and review of the literature].
In this study we present the clinicopathology, diagnosis and therapy of the disease with a review of the literature. A 65-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with a 48-hour history of intermittent pain in the right iliac fossa. Abdominal ultrasound raised the possibility of acute appendicitis but because of the relative asymptomatic state of the patient, the lack of fever and rebound tenderness we started observation. After 2 days with episodic abdominal pain, the patient was taken to the operating theatre for laparoscopic exploration. Intraoperatively, multiple diverticula were noted on the appendix and a...
