[Male hormonal contraception: past, present, future].
, Németh G Abstract In certain regions of the world the enormous rate of population growth raises economic and public health concerns and widely accessible contraceptive methods would be desired. In contrast, in other countries the use of effective contraception is a question of individual preferences. Today, most of the reliable contraceptive methods are applied by women, while the options for male methods are quite limited. It is well known that significant portion of pregnancies are still unplanned and several data revealed men's willingness to take part in family planning. Based on these needs, remarkab...

ari F Abstract Telemedicine is a young science that integrates innovations of information-technology and telecommunications into medical science. A successful telemedicine procedure should guarantee reduced workload of the healthcare system with well secured and cost-effective processes. Our goal was to collect the development phases of telemedicine projects through existing telecardiology solutions. Subsequent to reviewing international publications we analyzed the past and present situation of blood pressure monitoring, remote diagnostics of electrocardiography, implantable cardioverter defibrillator monitoring ...

[Genetics of type 1 diabetes: present and future].
, Hosszúfalusi N Abstract Over the past decades the majority of genetic research focused on common diseases, and remarkable results were obtained for exploring the genetic background of type 1 diabetes. The classic linkage analyses and the modern genome-wide association studies demonstrated that the genetic background is the primary risk factor for beta-cell autoimmunity while the progression to clinical onset could be triggered by the genetic factors, epigenetic modifications of gene expression and environmental factors together. The new system biology concept can help to understand the mechanisms underlyi...

[Neuroacanthocytosis diagnosis with new generation whole exome sequencing].
egh B Abstract In a patient with marked symptoms of Huntington disease after the huntingtin testing, which gave normal result, a whole exome sequencing (WES) has been performed based on an international collaboration. A homozygous G>A nucleotid change in the exon 34 of the VPS13A gene has been detected with WES, a mutation resulting in a premature stop codon at the position 1301. This change is a known pathogenic mutation. The aim of this article is to draw attention on the importance of the WES in the diagnosis of rare neurological diseases without any specific symptoms. [The role of steroids in oncological practice].
Bíró K Abstract Corticosteroids are a class of steroid hormones that are produced and disengage in the adrenal cortex. Traditionally natural and synthetic corticosteroids are used for diagnosing and treating dysfunctions of the adrenal cortex and treating inflammatory and immunological diseases. Their use is also widespread in oncological practice. Corticosteroids are indispensable in palliative care, in certain urgent oncological cases, as premedication of some chemotherapies and last but not least they have a key role in the secondary hormonal manipulations of metastatic castrate-resistant prostat...

[Thalidomide therapy in relapsed diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in elderly patients. Three cases].
S, Masszi T Abstract Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), a high-grade lymphoproliferative disease, is the most common lymphoma in adults, representing 31% of non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL). In elderly patients treatment is problematic because of the high toxicity of standard chemotherapy protocols, especially in relapsed cases, where high-dose chemotherapy and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation would be the best choice. More and more data is becoming available on alternative treatment of refractory/relapsed NHL, including studies on the positive effect of thalidomide and second generation IMiDs in DLBCL, whi...

So far, TP53 disruption is the key prognostic and predictive factor assisting treatment decisions, especially in the era of novel therapies. The leading symptoms of the disease are high fever that presents after an incubation period of 9-10 days and the red rash that begins several days after the fever starts. Beyond specific generalized symptoms, measles may have ocular symptoms. The most commonly occurring conjunctivitis, the so-called "red eye symptom", is not characteristic only for measles infection, however, by taking the generalize...

[Clinical aspects of severe infections caused by antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. The Empire strikes back?]
te; J Abstract In our days, growing incidence of antibiotic resistant bacteria has become an eminent public health problem. For survival Gram-negative species possess several different tools to withstand antibiotics: they produce degrading and modifying enzymes, decrease their permeability or expel drug molecules. An increasing proportion of severe nosocomial infections are caused by strains resistant to several antimicrobials (multiresistant, extensively resistant or panresistant species). Development of new antibiotic compounds may serve as a possible solution to this problem. Ceftolozane-tazobactam is a new bet...

First of all, in most cases emigration has been attributed to, almost exclusively, low salaries. There are a number of non-financial issues that could possibly be more easily addressed. METHOD: In order to get closer to these issues, we sent out a 37-item questionnaire to doctors, who originally graduated from the University of Debrecen. Altogether 82 of them sent back the questionnaire. RESULTS: The mean age at the time of emigration was 32 years. The most popular destination was the United States, ...

[The crisis of the hormonal system: the health-effects of endocrine disruptors].
Abstract The endocrine disruptors are natural or arteficial molecules wich are present in the animal (human) environment and entering into the organism. They are bound by hormone receptors, simulating or inhibiting the normal hormonal message. This way they are able to stimulate or hinder the function of the given cell, as well as the synthesis and transport of hormones or receptors. They can cause faulty hormonal imprinting in critical periods of development with lifelong consequences, as alteration of hormone-influenced cell functions, inclination to or manifestation of diseases, so they have medical importance....
