[Prognostic importance of albumin in oncology].
Abstract Diminished serum albumin level can be observed in inflammatory processes. Serum albumin level also reduces - irrespective of the presence of malnutrition - in locally advanced or metastatic malignancies. Low serum albumin level may have an influence also on the results of anticancer therapy (e.g., drug pharmacokinetics, adverse drug reactions). Extensive data of the literature and empirical experience prove the better prognosis of patients involved in nutritional therapy. Based on the most relevent data of the literature, the authors summarize the studies which have revealed the close correlation between ...

[Autoimmune encephalitis: possibilities in the laboratory investigation].
CONCLUSION: Detecting autoantibodies facilitates the diagnosis of autoimmune encephalitis in an early stage. Patients diagnosed early can be effectively treated with plasmapheresis and immunosuppressive drugs. The efficiency of therapies can be monitored by autoantibody detection. Therefore, the diagnostic immune laboratory plays an important role in proper diagnosis and in the prevention of rapidly progressing symptoms. Orv Hetil. 2018; 159(3): 107-112. [Concise history of toxicology - from empiric knowledge to science].
;zs P Abstract Toxicology is a science of poisonings by xenobiotics and endogenous physiological changes. Its empiric roots may be traced back to the emerging of the human race because the most important pledge of our predecessors' survival was the differentiation between eatable and poisonous plants and animals. In the course of social evolution, there were three main fields of using poisons: 1) hunting and warfare, 2) to settle social tensions by avoiding military conflicts through hiding strategy of eliminating enemies by toxic substances, 3) medicines applied first as anti-poisons and later by introducing stro...

CONCLUSIONS: The consistency between self-image and profession shows that the multidimensionality of psychiatry is not primarily an individual challenge. The impact on identity shows the key importance of education. Improving the prestige of psychiatry requires keeping our professional identity up-to-date, communicating with physicians with different preferences, and cooperating with other medical professions. [Diagnosis and management of blunt pancreatic trauma].
This study aims to review the conclusions of relevant articles of the past decades concerning the management of both adult and childhood pancreatic trauma. Classifications and their reliability are revised. We enlist scaling systems that can help in making decision whether to operate or to treat conservatively, from physical examination to diagnostic measures and complications. To date, the treatment principles of pancreatic trauma are not based either on prospective or on randomised trials. The database search of studies retrieved only retrospective and/or small case cohorts, case reports and expert opinions (levels 4 and...

[Proposal for the modernization of cervical screening procedure in Hungary].
may Z Abstract Two main considerations played roles in creation of new cervical screening system. One was the proven fact that high-risk human papilloma virus infection plays a role in the development of cervical cancer and pre-cancerous lesions. The other was the implementation of the HPV infection's biological behavior in the new screening strategy. The new screening procedure faithfully reflects the cervical carcinogenesis. An organised, population-based and age differentiated screening method could increase attendance of screening and could decrease the possibility of interval cancer rate due to increased sens...

[Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, as a component of the metabolic syndrome, and its causal correlations with other extrahepatic diseases].
Abstract Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is the most common non-infectious chronic liver-disease in our age, and is a spectrum of all the diseases associated with increased fat accumulation in the hepatocytes. Its development is promoted by sedentary life-style, over-feeding, and certain genetic predisposition. Prevalence in the adult population, even in Hungary is ~30%. In a part of cases, this disease may pass into non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, later into fibrosis, rarely into primary hepatocellular cancer. Fatty liver is closely and bidirectionally related to the metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes, and n...

[Prognostic importance of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in oncology].
Abstract Glycolysis is increased in most of the malignant cells, providing the largest proportion of energy needed for cell proliferation. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) catalyses the reversible process of pyruvate to lactate in anaerobic condition. LDHA isoenzyme expressed mainly by malignant cells, significantly increases lactate formation. Lactate induces the proliferation of oxygenated malignant cells, angiogenesis, and inhibits the innate and adaptive immune responses. Baseline serum LDH elevation correlates with shorter survival. The authors review the relevant studies exploring the correlation between LDH elev...

[Analysis of D-dimer laboratory findings and clinical evaluation].
kó J Abstract D-dimer is a product of the enzymatic degradation of the fibrinogen-fibrin molecule, and its existence is demonstrable in circulation. The test based limits may be considered as normal values. It was first thought to be a product of coagulation, then a product of lysis. High-concentration D-dimer in blood detected in thromboembolic diseases is considered to be of diagnostic value. In cases where thromboembolism was ruled out despite elevated titres but heparin (LMWH) or CLOPIDOGREL was given as a cautionary measure, we found that D-dimer values remained elevated. This finding means that in viv...

In each publication, the effusion was associated with either an acute angle-closure glaucoma or transitory myopia or both of these as leading symptoms. In the current publication, authors report on two cases where the acetazolamide-induced choroidal effusion was an accidental finding without e...

ppelmayer J Abstract The introduction of novel oral anticoagulants (NOAC) have long been expected drugs and they quickly became used widespread as their clinical effectiveness was as good as, or even better than the previously used only oral anticoagulant drug, the coumarins. Thus, the direct thrombin inhibitor dabigatran and the activated factor X inhibitors (rivaroxaban, apixaban, edoxaban) have become the part of daily therapeutic practice. Their permeation was facilitated by the guideline which suggested that no laboratory monitoring was required during NOAC treatment and this was very convenient for both pati...

The most important developments were summarized which could help the care of rare disease patients in the everyday practice. There are around 800 000 patients with rare diseases in Hungary. The lack of information leads to "invisibility" for the health and social care system (most of them without ICD code). Therefore, these patients still have a huge disadvantage even when compared to the patients of common diseases. Important national and international measures took place...

Abstract Coronectomy of lower impacted wisdom teeth is the partial removal of third molars, aiming to avoid inferior alveolar nerve injuries. The coronectomy procedure has several crucial points, such as the pulpal, periapical preoperative conditions of the tooth, the way of crown sectioning and decoronation, the wound closure and the length of patients' follow up. In addition it is important to identify and manage possible intraoperative or postoperative complications correctly. According to the literature, the complication rate of coronectomy is usually lower, than that of total teeth removal, furthermore consid...
